Shout out to May's Athlete of the Month: Aiella Gilbert! π₯π―πͺπ½
Aiella Giselle Mentaberry Gilbert, a 14-year-old student at Bishop Manogue High School, has been passionate about tennis since she first picked up a racket at age three. Her love for the sport drives her to train diligently, spending four days a week at Athletic Republic during the offseason, complemented by practice sessions with her father, who challenges her with drills and is relentless on her perfecting her serve. From an early age, Aiella's athletic journey has been diverse, including gymnastics, dance, and skiing trips with her family to Northstar in California. Notably, she has made a significant mark in jiu-jitsu, competing at the highest levels for her age group and winning tournaments against both boys and girls. More than one time, her father matched her against boys in her weight class, a move that initially bothered her, but ultimately boosted her confidence tremendously as she triumphed in these matches and had her hand raised on more than one occasion. While Aiella has never sparred in boxing, she has been training with her father since she was seven, mastering the art of the 'mean 1 -2; -a jab and cross that showcases her strength and precision. The kid can punch. As a freshman, Aiella quickly stood out on the Bishop Manogue tennis team, securing a varsity letter and clinching second place at the Regional Championships with her doubles partner. Her journey continued at the State Championships in Las Vegas, where they fought hard, but came up short. This July, Aiella will enhance her skills at a three-week intensive tennis camp at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. She eagerly anticipates her sophomore year, aiming to lead her team as a singles player, looking to secure both team and individual state championships. Competing at a collegiate level is next on her list and where she goes from there depends on just how much she wants to be a champion.
