Our cardiac and stroke education teams have been very busy the last few months! From attending back to school events or senior events, to teaching educators about hands-only CPR, they have been helping our community in incredible ways!
Our cardiac education team focuses on teaching hands-only CPR, along with educating the public on early heart attack symptoms. The stroke education team performs free blood pressure checks at all of these events, and they also educate the community on what symptoms to look out for when it comes to a stroke.
The latest events they've attended have been a back-to-school family health fair, a senior resource fair, and an educational series for local charter schools at three different campuses!
Thank you to these talented folks for providing invaluable education to the community! 🎉

The patient experience while staying in our hospital is of utmost importance to our organization. Our patient care teams work diligently every day to make sure they are in constant communication with patients about their individual needs and their ongoing care, and to formalize that process, we have something called “patient rounding,” which is a formal questionnaire that our teams use everyday to ensure we are always providing the best care and service possible to our patients.
Recently, many of our teams celebrated their accomplishments in achieving patient rounding goals, so these units were rewarded with sweet treats! 🍩
Thank you, to all of our teams and everyone in our health network, for the work you do every day. Your efforts go a long way in making the patient experience the best it can be for our community! 🎉

Today we are featuring Caitlyn, one of our newest speech language pathologists at Saint Mary's! Caitlyn is originally from Reno, born and raised, but went to college in Arizona and got her masters degree from the University of Washington. When she came back to Reno, she picked Saint Mary's for a few reasons:
"I was looking for jobs in a hospital setting, because that's my preferred work setting, and while there are some great hospitals in the area, a part-time job opening at Saint Mary's was available. After I met the leadership in the speech language pathology department, I felt like they were absolutely amazing and the therapy team here is outstanding. After meeting the team and getting to know the culture around here, it just felt like a perfect fit... I have 12 years of experience already and I've worked in a few different places, and meeting the staff here was easy to say 'wow, these are really excellent people and great therapists.' I'm excited to be here!"
Welcome to Saint Mary's, Caitlyn! We're happy you're back in Reno and helping the community with our team!
A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, a part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it requires, so brain cells die. A common way to spot symptoms of a stroke is to remember the word FAST:
F: Facial drooping, like one side of the face drooping or being numb
A: Arm weakness or numbness, such as one arm drifting downward when raising both arms
S: Speech difficulties, such as slurred speech, being unable to speak, or being hard to understand
T: Time to call emergency services, like 911
Other stroke symptoms can include sudden numbness, confusion, trouble seeing, trouble walking, or a severe headache. If you or a loved one are experiencing any of these symptoms, call 9-1-1 and get to the nearest emergency room.
