Padron Family Reserve No. 46 "The Little Hammer" Maduro

Smell of the foot: not much here but there is a slight fermentation smell and slight eucalyptus or menthol?

Cold draw: slight eucalyptus again and earthy.

First light: wow great flavor right away. Creamy. Medium bodied. The to***co seems aged for a long time, which it is. Dense ash.

First inch: man this is fabulous. Getting a little spice now. I wish I could say it tastes like coffee, figs, or chocolate. This doesn't have any particular notes but I love it. Smooth, round, creamy, and I can definitely tell the to***co has been aged a long time.

1st half: spice and eucalyptus are both gone now. Just tastes like fine to***co. I would say it has a sweetness to it.

2nd half: some white pepper. Consistent all the way down. Consistent flavors.

My take: a fabulous cigar that is creamy, smooth, and round. Some spice some white pepper. Possibly the best cigar in the shop. So there's always a catch right? It is very pricey but worth it.

Tastings with Drew:

Herrera Esteli by Drew Estate. The Brazilian Maduro Toro Especial

Smell of the foot. Very slight fermentation smell.

Cold draw. Not much here but it seemed slightly creamy.

First light. I immediately get the sweetness from the Maduro wrapper. Medium body. Creamy.

First half. Still creamy and sweet but now some umami (savory) like a dense freshly baked bread. Delicious

Second half. Now a little spice. Not hot spicy or black pepper but an herbal spice. Maybe some slight white pepper.

A delicious smoke that I enjoyed the whole way through. The taste doesn't change much but that's not a problem because the flavors are definitely in my taste profile and very enjoyable.

There is a natural wrapper version of this cigar (pictured to the left). Try one or both of them and post your comments 👍

Tastings with Drew:

Today pipe to***co. A comparison tasting between Escudo and Peterson Deluxe Navy rolls. The to***co is spun into rope and then cut into coins.

So here's the deal. Some people believe they are exactly the same while others say it's a different recipe.

They are made in the same factory and the coins look the same. So here we go ...

Peterson:

1) I get a slightly spicy or white pepper off the light.
2) the sweet Virginia is mellow, creamy, and consistent.
3) further down getting some nougat with the white pepper from the perique. Still creamy and mellow. A wonderful blend of flavors.

Escudo:

1) first light no pepper but mellow. Quickly goes away and I taste the spice and pepper like the Peterson.

2) not as creamy as the Peterson more spice or pepper but constant.

3) creamy now, sweet Virginia, and white pepper.

My take:

They are not the same but extremely similar. I believe the Peterson has more Virginia and less perique than the Escudo. Making the base Virginia stronger with the Peterson and milder with the Escudo. Similarly, the Perique has a more pronounced top note with the Escudo and more subdued with the Peterson. These to***cos are called Va**rs which stands for Virginia/Perique. Try both of them and make a comment on this post 👍. So which is the best? Neither it depends on your taste profile. I like the top note so my favorite is the Escudo. The Peterson is probably the most popular taste profile since it's the old dunhill blend. I recommend both.

This medium to full body cigar has a Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper and a Nicaraguan filler/binder.

This cigar is the third release of the Espinosa Laranja Reserva cigar lineup. To deliver a full-bodied selection Erik went with a dark Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper and bound the all-Nicaraguan fillers in a Brazilian Arapiraca leaf binder.

According to Erik, the Reserva Azulejo is “a special cigar and the perfect blend to join the Laranja family.”

Handmade at AJ Fernandez’s San Lotano Factory in Ocotál, Nicaragua.

This is another Laranja Reserva blend that’s sure to be a huge hit among the many loyal fans of Espinosa ci**rs. The blend delivers a good amount of sweetness and spice at full throttle.

So, if you like unique blends with rich Nicaraguan-forward flavors, the Espinosa Laranja Reserva Azulejo should be on the top of your list.

The Warped Sky Moon

Wrapper: Nicaraguan Shade Grown Corojo ‘99
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan Corojo ‘99, Criollo’ 98, Jalapa Medio Tiempo
Size: 5.5 x 42 Corona
Strength: Medium/Full

Review: this is for the Average Joe. I have average to above average taste buds so I won't pickup the subtle nuances. For example graham cracker and Ritz crackers will will just seem 'bready' to me. So here is today's review.

Cold draw: didn't pick up any flavor but it felt dense.

Smell of the cigar pre light: it generated a smell of sight fermentation, delicious.

Initial light: slight bitterness at the first light went away in seconds about a millimeter of the cigar. It burns very well.

Lit aroma: can't pick up on the distinct room note? Just smells like a cigar in general. Wait I'm getting a woody smell.

Taste at beginning: creamy, I get some spicy notes but subtle.

Taste halfway: the creaminess is still there, but now it's just a little bit of white pepper instead of spicy. The taste is delicious. Even though it's complex I would still describe as smooth creamy and balanced on the pallet. Pepper ending now predominantly creamy. Also a baking taste like bread or cookies coming out in the middle of the cigar. Oh just got some cocoa flavors, subtle, toward the end of the middle part.

Taste at the end:
Summary: is complex as it hits you in different parts of the mouth from sweet to sour and sweet to salty and a great deal in-between. This is now my favorite Warped cigar but I like the La hacienda as well. At the end it's herbal spicy not hot. It doesn't taste like a Cuban but that herbal spice is a similar flavor profile.👍

Tastings with Drew:

Taking center stage in the humidor today is the "Best Seller" by Arturo Fuente's Hemingway series.

This smoke is definitely medium bodied. A little creamy and smooth. By smooth I mean balanced, a whole mouth experience with no spice or black pepper. Maybe a slight hint of coffee.

Some slight white pepper I think from the Cameroon Wrapper 👍

Dense thick smoke, tastes bready.

Great construction. I had previously had the Short Story version (smaller) and loved that as well.
