Happy Birthday, Florence!
Wednesday night's Grand Opening at our Dallas campus was everything we hoped for and more! It was a lively evening filled with great conversations and inspiring words from Mark Vogt, Galen CEO, along with other distinguished guests. A standout moment was when we dedicated The Dr. Shirley Chater Student Success Center. Her leadership in nursing education has truly transformed our community.
From Division colleagues to elected officials to current nursing students, we are grateful for everyone who joined the celebration! Special thanks to Allen Harrison, President, HCA Healthcare, North Texas Division; Zach Mueller, Chief Nurse Executive, HCA Healthcare, North Texas Division; and Richardson City Council Member, Curtis Dorian, for joining us. It was an honor.
Enrollment is now open for the next term of our academic programs. The 3-year BSN program, 2-year LVN to ADN bridge program, and 1-year LVN programs start on July 8.
We wanted to make a joke, but it was too corny - so instead, we will just say Happy Popcorn Day!

"As an African America student attending Galen, it gives me the opportunity to represent my black heritage and make my ancestors proud. I'm excited to carry on a tradition that was set before me by others, because African American representation is important in the healthcare field. My plan is to bridge the gap between patients and nurses.
I am very proud to represent and encourage future African American nurses." - Lakeisha Bowden, BSN Student
This Black History Month, we honor Dr. Janice Brewington, PhD, RN, FAAN, a living legend and a pillar of excellence in the nursing world. As a 2023 American Academy of Nursing Living Legend, her journey from North Carolina A&T to becoming the Chief Program Officer at the National League for Nursing exemplifies leadership and dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Dr. Brewington's contributions are vast, from advancing healthcare education to securing over $30 million for community and health initiatives. Her work at the intersection of nursing and social justice has not only paved the way for future generations but also left an indelible mark on the profession. As a member of Galen's Board of Directors, her visionary leadership has influenced Galen's mission to educate and empower the next generation of nurses. Dr. Brewington's role in Galen's Board of Directors not only highlights her outstanding career but also her passion for nurturing a diverse and competent nursing workforce ready to meet the challenges of modern healthcare.
As we celebrate Black History Month, let's remember the impact of trailblazers like Dr. Brewington, who inspire us to strive for excellence and advocate for change!
"Being a black nurse is a unique experience that involves navigating the healthcare field while dealing with potential challenges related to race. It can bring a sense of pride and accomplishment, but also awareness of disparities that exist in the healthcare system. Building a supportive network and embracing diversity can be crucial in overcoming obstacles. Black Nurses often play a vital role in promoting cultural competence and bridging gaps in healthcare. While facing instances of bias or stereotypes, they contribute significantly to patient care, serving as advocates for underrepresented communities. Building resilience, fostering inclusivity, and advancing healthcare equity are key aspects of my professional journey." - Shuntillia Toler, ADN Bridge Student

Meet Congresswoman Lauren Underwood: Rep. Underwood made history as the first woman, first person of color, and first millennial to serve her community in Congress. Underwood, a registered nurse, co-founded the Black Maternal Health Caucus to address maternal health disparities in America and serves as co-chair of the House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee.
Before Congress, she was a Senior Advisor at HHS, aiding nationwide efforts against disasters, bioterror threats, and public health emergencies.
With a focus on improving healthcare, Underwood played a pivotal role in implementing the Affordable Care Act and has dedicated her career to public health and policy. She has even taught future nurse practitioners through Georgetown University’s online master’s program and worked with a Medicaid plan in Chicago to ensure it provided high-quality, cost-efficient care.
"I take great pride in my African American heritage! I am grateful for the opportunities that Galen provides. The Galen Nashville campus is diverse including African American professors and students. Seeing others who resemble me is motivating. In order to help patients better understand and meet their individual needs, I, as an future African American nurse, aim to contribute my distinct viewpoints, experiences, and insights to patient care. My objectives are to increase rapport and trust between nurses and patients, close cultural gaps, and enhance communication." - Keionia Ervin, BSN Student
