✨Part 2, of our Spotlight interview with the fabulous Ellie Zeron ⬇️

🍇What about the WA Wine industry motivates you?

The Washington wine industry is very dynamic, there are very talented winemakers all over the state making delicious wines, and that is very motivating. I love the fact that there are a lot of
grapes varieties to choose from, both red and white of great quality and I get the opportunity to contract some of those grapes to craft different wine styles for every palate out there.

🍇What’s one example of how women (or men) can help each other in the wine industry?

We can help each other by gathering often, to share positive encouragement, to celebrate accomplishments, and to help with challenging situations that sometimes we encounter in the cellar or in the vineyard. As neighbors it’s easier to give or get help when we communicate with confidence.

🍇The wine industry is always changing and evolving, how do you stay up to date
and ahead of the game?

By being curious! I am always trying to learn something new; I like networking by attending wine events and symposiums such as Unified and WineVit to find out about the latest state of the industry, its trends, the newest tools that allow us to work smarter in the cellar, the conferences
that teach us about the latest research and data, what we should be aware of and what we should prepare for, such as the changes in mother nature and how it would affect our vineyards.

🍇Working in the wine world can be exhausting, what do you do to de-stress?

Being in my vineyard relaxes me a lot! I pour myself some bourbon or scotch in an insulated mug that I can throw in between the rows, as I sing and dance to Latin music and soak up the Red Mountain’s sun while I do a little shoot thinning, leaf pulling, etc. I enjoy taking a lot of pictures of grape clusters and tendrils, and I love going fishing!

✨As our first Women’s History Month spotlight, we are honored to feature Ellie Zeron, Owner and Winemaker at Zeron Vineyard & Winery, and Winemaker at Elk Haven Winery✨ Ellie answers our questions below in the ⬇️

🍇 Tell us a little bit about our yourself! Where do you work and what you do? If this is your second career, what did you do before joining the wine industry?

My name is Ellie Zeron, I am the owner and winemaker of Zeron Vineyard & Winery in
Red Mountain. I work as a winemaker at Elk Haven Winery. Before I joined the wine industry I worked as a consultant for two federal government agencies and before that I worked as engineering assistant in the oil & gas industry in Texas.

🍇How and why did you get into the wine industry?

🍷How?
I visited Napa and Sonoma a few times and decided that one day I was going to plant
grapes and make wine from those grapes.
As a stay-at-home mom, I enrolled in the UC Davis Extension program and completed
the Winemaking Certification Program in 2012.
While I was working in San Diego, I started my small branding project for “ZERON” as a
negociant with couple of wines from Napa being sold under my own label. Then, during
one of my viticultural classes taught by Professor Carole Meredith, I learned about
AVA’s, and that was when I decided my new career would take place in the Red
Mountain AVA. After searching for several years, in 2016 I found 5 acres of raw land on
Red Mountain to plant the dream vineyard of my dreams, then in 2018 we planted 3
acres of Cabernet Sauvignon clone 08.
🍷Why?
I am career woman and making wine is aligned with my scientific background. I also like educating people about wine in a fun and practical way. I want to make wine tasting more approachable specially to the Hispanic community and to those whose speak Spanish, by conducting tastings in Spanish and English and by offering muti-cultural events to create a wine environment that guests can relate to and be comfortable in.

🍇 To be continued…
