Do your O&P patients struggle with understanding Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage Plans? Is it difficult to explain to them the effect a MAP has on their orthotic and prosthetic care? Please use the information below to help educate your patients (and your staff):

WHY STAY WITH TRADITIONAL MEDICARE?
A. An advantage plan is NOT a secondary or supplemental insurance.
B. Traditional Medicare has LESS restrictions such as specialists.
C. Most of your providers prefer traditional Medicare.
D. Your out-of-pocket costs end up being less.
E. You may enroll with a secondary/supplemental plan with traditional Medicare.

DISADVANTAGES TO ADVANTAGE PLANS
A. Access to care is limited (due to provider networks).
B. Frequent denials of coverage for O&P care.
C. More time consuming. More face-to-face appointments may be necessary.
D. Your out-of-pocket costs can be higher.
E. Many items, devices, procedures etc. require prior authorization.
F. Advantage plans are audit environment heavy.

We recommend enrolling with traditional Medicare and signing up with a secondary/supplemental insurance to help cover the 20% that Medicare doesn’t cover. AARP and Mutual of Omaha are some examples of great supplemental insurance.
