ME: I’m sorry. The candidate just accepted an offer from another company.

CLIENT: What?! You told us he said we were the top choice to work for.

ME: He did.

CLIENT: We’re #1 in our space, you said he liked that.

ME: He really did.

CLIENT: You said he really liked the team and thought he would fit in here.

ME: He did.

CLIENT: I don’t understand, we were planning to make him an offer.

Yes. And while you were THINKING, your competition was ACTING. While you waited a week to get that everyone to interview him. Your competition had him do a video call with the team after hours. While you sat on the knowledge that she was interviewing elsewhere… Your competition made things happen and sped up the process. While you waited a month to get a few more people into the mix for "comparison"... Your competition recognized top talent and made the call. While you debated with HR over salary requirements and asked her for her history… They put out an offer at the top end of their range to ensure the deal was done. Just like anything you buy today, price is up and availability is low. This is key.

If you want the top talent, you need to be thoughtful, yes. But you need to be decisive. I promise you, your competition is.

5 Hiring Trends for 2021!

2020 turned out to be nothing like any of us expected. The pandemic disrupted our personal and professional lives deeply. While things are still uncertain in many ways, the business world seems to have picked up momentum after the initial slowdown.
In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, IT unemployment nationally is still below 3.5%, making it very difficult and expensive to hire and keep qualified people. As the demand for IT talent continues to be high, the expectations and pressure on recruiting teams and staffing agencies grows. For us living in the world of talent acquisition, it is vital to understand and adapt to the key trends that will shape the hiring processes in 2021. If you are looking to optimize your hiring processes and maximize output, here are 5 hiring trends in the IT labor market you should know:

1. Remote Work
During the last 10 months, the physical location of an employee has become less important. As companies have adapted to having remote employees, many have learned they have access to a much greater talent pool and in some cases, they can hire that talent for less money than they would pay for individuals in local markets.
In addition to a larger talent pool, many organizations have seen better output and efficiency while employees are enjoying a flexible schedule and can avoid the daily commute. This efficiency gain is arguably the most significant win for both the employee and the company.

Work from home removes physical barriers between employers and top candidates. It is also helping companies to improve deliverables to clients. With work being performed in multiple time zones, time to market can be reduced and organizations can achieve a quicker return on investment.

2. AI in Recruiting
Artificial Intelligence has penetrated the hiring process, and the initial outcomes are impressive.

AI's unparalleled ability to rapidly sift through millions of data points enables recruiters to quickly identify high-potential candidates. With AI, recruiters are also able to tap into a wider talent pool to source candidates, including online career boards, social media platforms, and agency databases.

One of the biggest benefits of incorporating AI into recruiting efforts is the ability to identify passive candidates effectively and efficiently. According to Forbes, “70% of the global workforce is comprised of passive candidates. Ignoring the potential of this group can have a devastating effect on the company’s success. There’s a reason that 98% of talent acquisition teams rate passive candidates as a critical source of talent. "Yet AI is not a silver bullet, it takes time to get machine learning to successfully match candidates with jobs. Chatbots should only be used in the initial stages of the recruiting process and should not be leveraged in the closing stages when human relationships are essential.

3. Social Recruiting
10 years ago, who would have thought social media would become such a powerful hiring channel? Aside from the extensive and easy access to people, social media-based recruiting offers the opportunity for one-on-one engagement, often making candidates feel more valued.

If you are not using these channels, you’re likely being out recruited by your competitors. Social recruiting does not only involve posting jobs on your company’s pages, but allows you to search for promising candidates, get them engaged with your company brand, and eventually invite them to apply to your open positions.
With the low cost and big impact, social recruiting will become one of the top 2021 recruitment trends.
4. Diversity & Inclusion

In 2021 expect to see diversity initiatives in the workplace continue to be a trend. We mentioned Artificial Intelligence being used for screening, but it is also being used to minimized bias in the interview process. Unlike an individual, AI doesn’t have any biases when screening and selecting candidates.

For many companies, the screening process is inconsistent. Resume screens are just that, quick scans that focus on characteristics which aren’t necessarily predictive of a candidate’s chance of success—i.e., GPA, former employer, or years of experience. Phone screens are not much better, leading to even greater variability with respect to which candidates make it through your hiring funnel. Structuring the interviewing process with assessments and video interviews helps achieve a more consistent and fair evaluation of candidates, yielding better, more inclusive hiring outcomes.

Unconscious biases compound at every step of the traditional hiring process. Realizing this, more companies are using AI to help mitigate bias by eliminating inconsistent variables, letting the recruiting team focus on more job-relevant criteria. AI empowers you to assess each candidate quickly and fairly, so you can make high-quality inclusive hiring decisions.

5. Improving the candidate experience
Within this competitive — but still volatile — job market, you can expect some anxiety from prospective hires. It will be critical for talent acquisition professionals to make next year’s hiring process efficient, meaningful, and above all, a positive experience for everyone involved.

Poor experiences – from complex applications and long-drawn-out interview processes, to poor communication and lack of feedback – will not only turn off applicants but tarnish the organization’s brand, hurting its ability to recruit top talent in the future. To ensure a positive experience, recruiters should provide clear and concise job descriptions, tell the candidate what to expect in interviews, extend offers in a timely manner and communicate with applicants every step of the way.

Hiring and retention of top talent is the lifeblood of all successful companies, so hopefully you can incorporate some of these trends into your 2021 recruiting strategy.

Happy Holidays!
