Did you know using a fan as a main cooling device won’t lower your body temperature or prevent heat-related illness? Fans circulate air but won’t lower the room temperature or the body’s core temperature.
With an advisory for high humidity and heat in effect until Friday evening, stay cool with these tips:
• Drink plenty of fluids
• Take frequent breaks in shaded areas or inside with air conditioning when available.
• Schedule outdoor tasks for early morning or evening hours when temperatures are cooler.
• Don’t leave children or pets unattended outdoors or in vehicles.
• Check on neighbors or relatives.
• Wear a hat, loose, lightweight clothing, and sunscreen with at least an SPF (sun protection factor) 15.
• Outdoor workers should take extra precautions.
For more information, read the summer heat safety precautions blog: https://www.reidhealth.org/blog/summer-heat-safety-precautions-you-need-to-know
According to the CDC, 44% of men who are due for a yearly physical don't schedule the visit. Yearly physicals allow the opportunity to share new concerns and health changes with your provider. It’s also a chance to review preventive care. The earlier issues are found and the sooner they can be addressed, the better the outcome might be.
Requesting an appointment that works best with your schedule is easy! Visit MyReid through the patient portal or the mobile app and select "visits."
How do you beat the heat? Be a penguin. Andrea Lykens, RN, Inpatient Care, dressed as a penguin to bring laughs and smiles to patients and the Reid team. A moment of kindness brings joy to Andrea, too. With temperatures expected to reach 97 degrees through the week, take time to cool off, hydrate, and check on neighbors if they might need assistance during times of high temperatures or humidity.
Happy Father's Day! Fatherhood brings many benefits to men and their families, including to their physical and mental health. Men’s Health Awareness Month joins in celebration with Father's Day to focus on the special health needs of men and boys, and the importance for them to be proactive and prioritize their health.
Today as we honor fathers and father figures, we support men as they make efforts to be present for themselves and their health, just as they have for others. 👔

Did you know it's four times more likely for a worker in healthcare to be affected by violence than other industries?
Many incidents go unreported because healthcare workers might think their assailant’s actions can be attributed to altered conditions affecting their mental state. As a result, 70% of incidents aren’t reported by nurses, according to the Indiana Hospital Association.
Violence isn’t part of the job. Reid Health is committed to providing high-quality care, but also to the safety of those in our care and staff. To help support an environment of safety and security, the Reid Health Police Department gives assistance with violent incidents. Reid’s Police Department takes proactive measures to ensure the safety of Reid team members by presenting programs on staff safety as well as other related topics.
As we recognize Hospitals Against Violence Day, join us in combating purposeful acts of violence in the workplace and our communities.
To report incidents of violence, please call the Reid Health Police Department at (765) 983-3200.

National Cancer Survivors Day was earlier this month, but on June 14, Reid Health will host its own Survivors Day celebration. Join us at 11 a.m. in the Reid Cancer Center parking lot for music, giveaways, food, and fellowship as we honor cancer survivors such as Frances Jordan, Marcia Norman, and Marlene Sweet.
Over a four-month period, sisters Norman and Sweet underwent double mastectomies while their mother, Jordan, had a mastectomy of her right breast.
“If women think something’s wrong – even if the mammogram says it’s good – they should talk to their doctor and push for an ultrasound,” Sweet said. “And find a doctor who will listen like Dr. Grayson and Dr. Deitsch did.”
To read more of their story of survival, visit https://www.reidhealth.org/patient-stories/1-mother-2-daughters-3-breast-cancer-survivors.
