Summer months can mean more time outdoors. Before heading out, wear sun-protective clothing and use sunblock with an SPF 30 or higher. While outside, seek shade whenever possible. Protecting yourself from UV rays decreases the chances of skin cancer, damage to the eyes, and premature aging among other reasons. During UV Awareness Month this July, consider the many factors why protection from UV rays will benefit your health: https://www.reidhealth.org/blog/why-sun-protection-is-important

On Tuesday, representatives of our EMS Training Institute participated in Ivy Tech Richmond’s Career Exploration Camp.

EMTs Danielle Ruhl and Zach Wolf along with Paramedic and Training Center Coordinator Ben Simmons worked with area high school students who are considering a career in a health-related field. They showed the students one of our ambulances, helped them practice equipment use, and taught splinting and Stop the Bleed techniques.

Thank you to Ivy Tech for inviting us to participate! We had a great time! 😄

Developing and maintaining healthy relationships with others is good for our health. Positive interactions with family members, friends, and others strengthen our support system, boost our self-esteem, improve mental health, and reduce stress. Although interaction is important for our well-being, so is taking time to recharge, for hobbies or interests, and for physical activity so we can feel our best.

During Social Wellness Month this July, set goals for social wellness by meeting new people, connecting with family or friends, or for self-care to improve overall health for your mind, body, and spirit.

Take a moment to reflect and see what you enjoy about yourself. National Compliment Your Mirror Day might sound a little pretentious, but it's really about building self-awareness and confidence. Compliment yourself. The person looking back at you needs your support and needs to know just how amazing you are.

Whether you're traveling or at home this summer, here are a few important tips for prescription medication safety.

🔸 Store medications according to directions. Some medications might be less effective when exposed to light or kept in too hot or cold temperatures.
🕑 Take your medications on time. To help you remember, set an alarm on your phone or use a pill organizer.
☀️ Your skin might be more sensitive to light because of medications. Photosensitivity can lead to sunburns and potentially an increased risk for skin cancer.
🧳 If you're traveling, pack extra doses in case of an incident with luggage, delays, or a change of plans. Also, consider packing medications in your carry-on luggage.
💧 Drink plenty of water to hydrate and to help your body process medications effectively.
🗣 Talk with your medical provider if you have questions. Read more about managing prescription medications: https://www.reidhealth.org/blog/managing-prescription-medication-side-effects
