UREMS awarded HeartSafe Campus Certificate during 20th anniversary year The UR Emergency Medical Services team was recently awarded the HeartSafe campus certificate the same year as their 20th anniversary.
In April, 1998 a group of University of Richmond students (including Dr. Patrick Oliver, pictured right) organized the ‘Spider Advanced Volunteer Emergency Rescue Squad’ (SAVERS). In 2009 SAVERS became an operational element of RAA and changed its name to the University of Richmond EMS (UREMS).
At Saturdays UREMS Spring Luncheon, all members were presented with a 20 year commemorative Challenge Coin to celebrate this significant milestone.
Congratulations to all current and former SAVERS / UREMS members and thank you all for your service.

Continuing Collegiate EMS Week:
John Catalano has been with UREMS for a year and a half. He is also involved in scientific research and works as a TA. He is studying Biology with a Neuroscience Concentration and hopes to become a trauma surgeon. He loves UREMS because of the opportunity to work with real patients before medical school and the responsibility of helping the community.
Continuing Collegiate EMS Week: Tess Munoz has been with UREMS for a year and a half and currently serves as our treasurer. She is involved in club crew team, an academic skills center tutor, and a chemistry teaching assistant. As a Chemistry major and Biology minor she is currently applying to medical school. When asked why she loves UREMS Tess said, “at first, I really wanted to drive the cool car and park anywhere I wanted, but it turns out the people in UREMS and URPD are pretty great to work with too.
Continuing Collegiate EMS Week:
Christopher Lee Clark is the President and Chief of Operations of UREMS and has been with the organization and on the executive board since his freshman year. When asked what he loves about UREMS he said, “All of it. It’s my life at this point. I have lived and breathed EMS since my sophomore year of high school and UREMS is simply an extension of that. I’ve loved every moment I’ve spent with the organization and I’m going to miss it terribly. As I’m writing this, I’m coming to grips with the reality that in a few short months I’ll be off into adulthood and I’ll have to leave the organization behind.” Chris is a Biology major hoping to work for the CDC and return to graduate school to pursue a Ph.D. in public health and epidemiology. Once he graduates, his passion and devotion for this organization will be missed.
Continuing with Collegiate EMS week:
Hillary Acuna is a Biology major and Healthcare Studies minor who is pursuing a career as a physician’s assistant. While she has been with UREMS for almost a year, she is very involved on campus in the SpinnURs Dance Team, CAPS Outreach, and Delta Gamma. Her favorite quote is “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind” - Dr. Seuss. Her favorite thing about UREMS is working with other committed members and having a role in the safety of our campus. Thank you, Hillary Acuna for your service!
This year for Collegiate EMS week, we will be honoring our seniors: Evan Crawford is our Training Officer and has been with the organization for almost a year. As a Chemistry major and Biology minor he aspires to become a doctor. On campus, he is also involved in Men’s Club Ultimate Frisbee and his favorite quote is, “Skim milk is water that’s lying about being milk.” His favorite thing about UREMS is helping his peers and parking anywhere on campus in our vehicle.
