My name is Erika,

I work for a local Bay Area High school and I also recently became a Local Coordinator with CIEE for the Berkeley School District and surroundings.
We are a non-profit student exchange organization that sponsors J-1 students from over 60 countries worldwide to come to the US to live with host families and attend their local high school.
We are currently looking for some volunteer host families to host their students arriving in August for the 24’-25’ school year.
Being a host family is fairly simple…you need to provide a loving and welcoming home, a bedroom for the student to sleep (though one can be shared), meals, and help arrange transportation to/from school. In return for hosting, families learn about a different culture, enjoy lifelong friendships with students and fulfill the dream of a young person!
A host family can host for 8-10 weeks, a semester, or the full school year.

All students are fluent in English and will come with their own spending money and insurance and enroll in our high school like any other student would.

Made a batch today for the rainy morning! Babà al rum are delicious sponge cakes soaked in a sticky, citrus-scented boozy syrup. Although Italians often link babà with the city of Naples, this much-loved dessert actually originated in the eighteenth century in Central Europe, namely in the Duchy of Lorraine.

Here we go! Only till 19th. Le Zeppole di San Giuseppe are made with a choux pastry. Filled with a creamy delicate Italian pastry cream and topped with black cherries or fresh strawberries. Dusted with powdered sugar just before serving. They are prepared for father’s day in Italy - San Giuseppe. If you ask an Italian what his favorite Italian pastries are, these are definitely at the top of list. Either baked or fried it really doesn’t matter. As long as they are filled with a crema pasticcera (pastry cream)! This time I decided to bake them rather than fry, to make a lighter pastry.

There is no typical dish for this, but there are various traditional desserts, depending on the region. For example, it is typical in Lombardy, especially in the province of Varese, where we come from, to eat the Ca****lo: it is a special puff pastry, shaped like a camel, in memory of the Three Kings who came to Jesus on camels. ✨🐪✨
