Hello Kinni Kayak followers. I just want to give you a heads up. Yesterday’s rain has doubled the flow of the Kinni. It’s up around 300 cfs. Experienced kayakers are smiling and this flow level is not recommended for beginners at all. High end intermediate to advanced paddlers who are heading out to enjoy the extra volume of water, be super heads up for trees/strainers. I expect trees to move around this summer. The fact that there are literally a few hundred down trees hanging around the banks from the spring floods. This water level will give you less time if you need to pull over and portage.

I will be posting some educational tips and videos as the summer goes on. The first tip I will give is about leading a group kayaking down the river. The lead kayaker in your group should always be heads up for trees/strainers. You should agree upon a call back that the others in your group will know either by a verbal or visual command. Verbal, yelling out “tree go far right” or “tree pull over on right must portage”. When using verbal as the lead kayaker it’s always good to look over your shoulder to get eye contact to make sure they heard your command. Visual is good to use when with a bigger group. A common way to warn your group of a strainer is as follows. Sticking your paddle up in the air, above your head, one hand holds the paddle, the other quickly goes back and forth across the shaft, warning others that there is a tree in the water, then with both hands on paddle point positive which side to avoid the strainer or what side your pulling over to portage. If portaging the lead kayaker should quickly get on shore and then assist others doing so also. Sometimes, it’s not always an ideal shoreline to get up and out of your boat to move around the strainer. It’s always a good point to get everyone around the strainer before you start off again. A tip for the lead kayaker on blind corners. You want to swing the corner wide. Angle your boat back towards the way the river is bending. This will give you time to view the river and make a choice. With your angle to the inside of the bend you can cut back across the river if needed our stay wide on the course your on.

Be safe, be smart, most of all have fun kayaking. Always giving the Kinni our any other river the respect it’s due. This will lead to a great day of boating for you and yours!

Hello Kinni Kayak followers! My name is Andrew Waters. I have recently taken over Kinni Kayak from Jayson Westbrook. I would like to personally thank him for all the years of hard work making Kinni Kayak an excellent choice for your Kinni kayaking adventures. Little bio about myself. I have been in the kayaking industry going on 20+ years. It started out as passion that transferred to a way of livelihood. Whitewater kayaking was my specialty. I was lucky to race and compete around North America including some overseas trips to Europe and South America. I branched out getting my kayak teachers certification. This led to me running outfitters in North Carolina, Ecuador, and most recently Colorado. Being a kid from North Dakota, I knew nothing about the world of kayaking. I feel blessed to have had some life changing experiences from the seat of a kayak. I will be bringing this knowledge and experience to Kinni Kayak. I will be regularly sharing info on the Kinni. Right know the first thing I would like to share is the Kinni has changed drastically! The spring floods have changed the River course in multiple spots. The Kinni runs around 90-130 cfs during normal flows. It jumped to 2,000 cfs during that 36 hours of rain in March when we still had 3 1/2 feet of snow on the ground. Lots of new trees have fell, along with newly created s-turns. Luckily most of the trees fell parallel, so no portages as of this writing. Beaches that you might remember and have enjoyed are gone. In its place are brand new beaches, some 75 yards in length. Mother Nature doing well, whatever she wants! We well have 2018/19 perception kayaks for your use that all have padded seating and padded back braces. Timely shuttle service and great customer service. The rates for the 2019 season will be $50 per person/kayak. This rate provides you your kayak, paddle, pfd, and return shuttle service. We at Kinni Kayak look forward to getting you on the water. Let’s go kayaking!! Call 715-204-4045 to book your reservation.

To all my kayak friends...Many of you are unaware of the Dams in River Falls and what is going on with them. We have a group "Friends of the Kinni" that is working to remove both of the dams in RF. This would put the "falls" back into River Falls! Please check out Friends of the Kinni on facebook and see how things are coming along! This could be a great thing for the city and the people who use, love this River.

I am planning for a Feb. kayak trip down the lower kinni. If you would like to join me or have questions please feel free to ask. I will be able to bring at least 5 people with me on this trip. This will take place when the weather is at least 30+ and the way things are looking now that will be working out. This is a real fun trip that gives you a look at the river and canyon like you have never seen it before. It is special.
