Deep Creek Fly Fishers July 24th Speaker is
Forrest Brizendine, 7pm start at clubhouse.

Forrest will be speaking about the myriad of NOR-CAL FLY FISHING OPPORTUNITIES

Forrest is the owner and head guide of NorCal Fishing Guides. His love for fishing and the outdoors is why he chose to be a guide. A NorCal Native, his father exposed him to the beautiful, and abundant waterways of the region and he’s been hooked ever since! For the last 30-plus years he has fished the Northern California waters for a wide variety of gamefish, using a variety of styles and techniques. NorCal Fishing Guides offer lessons for first-time anglers and precise guidance for the experienced. They strive to provide clients with a truly memorable fishing experience every day. Come and see for yourself what Northern California fishing is all about!

Forrest will discuss the variety of fly fishing opportunities in the area along with the seasons, flies, techniques and fisheries. From chromers in the winter on the beautiful coastal rivers to steelhead, stripers, and trout on the Sacramento River system, the region offers something for everyone!

Deep Creek's May 22nd Speaker is David Carranza, owner of Trucha Fly Fishing Guide Service.

Introduction to Fishing Crowley Lake

David Carranza, owner/operator of TRUCHA Fly Fishing Guide Service, specializes in guiding on Crowley Lake, and various Eastern Sierra waters.
David has been fishing in the Eastern Sierra since early childhood. He is an accomplished fly fisherman, with extensive knowledge and experience
fishing Crowley Lake dating back to 1998. He typically resides at the lake full-time from May to the end of October, and fishes the lake extensively.
David has taught countless anglers how to fly fish, many who were first timers fishing with a fly rod. He believes that fly fishing is not as difficult as
most tend to believe, therefore welcomes all levels of experience from first timers and novices to women, children and skilled anglers.

David’s commitment to his guide service is stated in his own words as follows, I will employ all my knowledge and experience developed through
past years of fishing Crowley Lake to bring you the excitement and rush of the fish bite (aka as “The Grab”), the fight, landing of fish to the net, and
ultimately, accomplish that Kodak moment! Most importantly, I’ll bring my passion, excitement and enthusiasm. I will introduce you to the mechanics
of the fly fishing rod and reel and guide you along for an exciting and memorable experience. If you love the outdoors, our California Eastern Sierra, and of course fishing, then you owe it to yourself to get on Crowley Lake and hook into these athletic, protein nourished, and strong fighting trout. Fighting a Crowley Lake fish is exciting, addicting, and a complete rush!

For all you fly tyers, David will be tying a popular Crowley Lake midge pattern before the meeting. He will have the necessary supplies, but please
bring your own black uni-thread 6/0 or utc ultra thread and your fly tying tools.

We are thrilled to have three presenters tonight, 7pm start. Jane Miller, Jill Wagner, and Jerry Searcy will all be speaking about volunteering to better our community and give back what we can.

JANE MILLER, LEAD MENTOR
The Los Angeles Mayfly Project
With over 27 years as an educator, Jane enjoys mentoring in her free time and is now the lead mentor for TMP Los Angeles after mentoring in TMP Seattle since 2017. In her day job, she partners with districts across the US to create equitable learning experiences and decrease the digital divide. When it comes to fly fishing, she is no stranger.

Since 2004, Jane has enjoyed wading the rivers and
oceans to refine her fly-fishing skills. The Mayfly Project opportunity brings together her love of children and her hobby of fly fishing. Sharing and supporting children in foster care through fly fishing offers the opportunity to explore conservation and the great outdoors that will make a lasting impression on both the children and Jane herself.

It is this healing connection with nature, and with fellow fly fishers, that our featured guest speaker, Jane Miller, uses to impact the lives of children in the foster care system. As lead mentor of the
Los Angles Mayfly Project, Jane and her fellow volunteers connect with children in the foster care system through fly fishing. Jane will tell us about
the program and outline how folks can volunteer.
Continuing the theme of volunteerism in Fly Fishing, tonight's meeting will also be looking at two ongoing, active volunteer opportunities that our club is involved with. Jill Wagner, our Trout
in the Classroom chairperson, will have a presentation about this dynamic program that allows school children to raise trout from eggs in their classrooms and then have a field trip to release them
as fry into local waters. Lastly, Jerry Searcy, our Conservation Chair, will have a presentation about volunteer opportunities at the Fisheries Resource Volunteer Corps (FRVC).

This Wednesday, March 27th, 7pm start time, Deep Creek Fly Fishers is very pleased to have Capt. Mike Gaglianese from Rockport Fly Fishing Outfitters. Mike will be speaking about Fly Fishing the Texas Gulf Coast for Redfish and other awesome species.

Mike's Bio:
I grew up in upstate NY just South of the Adirondack Mountains. As I made my way through high school and college, I decided I wanted to turn my love for fly fishing into a career. After playing baseball at Purdue for 4 years, I moved to Gunnison, CO to guide a Western River from a drift boat.

Shortly after I realized there is no way to feed my fishing obsession up there year-round, so about 5 years ago I started coming down to Rockport on the Middle Texas Coast to get my fix in the off season. The endless wilderness and flats accessible by poling skiff that were full of sight fishing opportunities kept me coming back and staying longer. With the help of my partner Capt. Dane Scott, we spent the years fishing and guiding roughly 60 miles of the Texas Coastal Bay systems. Our season down here lasts from October to June until we escape the heat and head back to our drift boats.

The terrain and habitat vary from marshland covered in Spartina Grass to crystal clear sand flats with a mangrove backdrop. These fish eat big flies and on a good day you can expect to be casting at fish all day. The variety and diversity of scenarios in this fishery makes it special. We see everything from schools to single tailers, spooky fish and fish that would eat a set of car keys as soon as they hit the water. All the fishing we do down here is from the poling skiff, a true spot and stalk fishery.

Friends,

I signed a petition on Action Network telling California Fish and Game Commission to Save the Southern California Steelhead.

California Trout is leading the effort to have Southern California steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) listed as endangered under the California Endangered Species Act.   CalTrout used the best-science available to support our petition. Listing this species as endangered will be the first step that California state agencies use to inform future management decisions.  It will allow agencies to prioritize funding for restoration and ensure any projects in the fish’s range avoid adverse impacts to the population. Moreover, the listing provides acknowledgement of the species’ fundamental importance and their dire situation. We drew upon the drive and immense work of our partners in conservation and the innate desire of this state’s citizens to protect the amazing natural diversity of the landscapes we inhabit as the impetus to take this step. We need your help. The Fish and Game Commission needs to hear that allowing this species to disappear is not acceptable

Can you join me and take action? Click on link in bio to sign petition.

In 2016 he graduated from the Sweetwater Travel Fly Fishing Guide School and in 2021 graduated from Sandy Moret’s Florida Keys Fly Fishing School to advance his fly fishing knowledge. man made aquatic park in the nation! Originally named False Bay by the Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542. Mission Bay has 27 miles of shoreline, 19 that are sandy beaches.

It can be fished year round with our not so bad San Diego climate! In the summer months the bay can be on FIRE!

Deep Creek Fly Fishers is thrilled to have one of our favorites this month at the clubhouse – Dave Smith.  This Wednesday 6/28, 7pm start time.  Dave will be giving a presentation on DIY New Zealand Fly Fishing.  Get there early to watch Dave tie a few flies prior to the meeting start.

New members are always welcome!

You often hear the phrase “There’s more water than anyone can fish in a lifetime” and nowhere is this more applicable than New Zealand, with just under 1,400 public access points published by NZ Fish and Game to rivers, lakes, and reservoirs within New Zealand.

With so many options for the angler, it can be mind boggling even to know where to start.  It’s no wonder so many venturing fly anglers turn to hosted trips to take the confusion out of where to fish, how to fish, fly patterns and gear selection.  With a few tips and tricks, a DIY New Zealand trip is as easy as booking a hosted trip and a whole heck of a lot more fun.  As a world fly fishing traveller and Do It Yourself (DIY) expert, Dave will help guide you through the process of research, booking, and executing a trip of a lifetime.

Dave has been providing fly fishing presentations and on the water tutorials since 2014 and loves sharing his fly fishing and fly-tying passions. Dave is an ambassador for Semperli Fly Tying Pro Team, Partridge of Redditch, and Renomed USA fly tying scissors. Over the years Dave has been able to successfully plan and execute DIY trips around the world with his fly-fishing wife, Lesley.
