Dr. Bowman completed his half marathon this past weekend and beat his previous time by 15mins! We would like to thank all of our patients for all of their kind words and support! It’s always fun to see what times you all guess! We saw every prediction from 4mins to 3hours haha! His actual time this year was 2hrs 3mins and 38sec! Of the 52 predictions we received, the winner of the $50 Amazon Gift Card is (drum roll)….. Josh Allen! He guessed 2hrs 4mins and 32sec! Thank you all again for your support and encouragement! The Blue Ridge Marathon is tomorrow!! If you haven’t already, come in for an adjustment and fill out a slip to guess Dr. Bowmans race time!! The winner will receive a $50 Amazon gift card! Spring time is here and that means we’re all getting back outside and enjoying the nicer weather!!

It also means that Dr. Bowman is gearing up for another Blue Ridge Marathon!! He will be running the half marathon again on Saturday April 20, 2024 and is hoping to beat last year’s time! This also means our patients get to guess his time for a chance to win a $50 Amazon gift card!! You can submit your prediction at the front desk, when you come for your next appointment! Voting starts today and will end on Friday April 19!

To many, It may seem a little odd to jump in a river, in February, when it’s 19 degrees out! However, tons of people participate in the annual Polar Plunge to raise money for the Virginia Special Olympics! Dr. Bowman was one of those brave souls this past weekend! So if you catch him sniffling this week, just know it was for a good cause!

Cue the Rocky Theme!! Dr. Bowman has started training for the Blue Ridge Marathon!! He will be running the half marathon again this year to see if he can beat his time! To kick off training, he joined Dr. Brooke from Adjust NRV for a brisk run up the Hokie Stadium!

We are starting the week off right with some more stretches!!

This is the Bird Dog with a spin! For the full range of motion, you will add in a little elbow to knee action!

This movement helps to strengthen the core and lower back muscles. Which is important for:

✅injury prevention
✅stability
✅muscular endurance
✅functional strength

If this is challenging you can start with just the Bird Dog movement using opposite arm and opposite leg extension to help improve balance and provide a great stretch for the lower back! Check out the standard Bird Dog Stretch in the comments!

Detox Tea Recipe: Lemon Ginger Turmeric | Nourish Move Love 01/29/2024

Homemade Detox Tea Recipe: Lemon Ginger Turmeric Tea

Start the day with this flavorful and healing lemon ginger turmeric tea. A homemade detox tea recipe that supports your immune system and maintains a healthy digestive system.

Takes about 5mins to prep and 20mins to cook!

Recipe type: Drink, Tea
Cuisine: Drink
Serves: 10-12
Ingredients
6 c water
1 chunk fresh ginger, peeled (approximately 5-6" in length)
3 cinnamon sticks (or 1-2 tsp ground cinnamon)
1 tsp ground turmeric
½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
6 fresh lemons (and the juice of ½ fresh lemon when ready to serve)

Instructions:
1. Peel the fresh ginger root and dice into thin slices.
2. Combine the fresh ginger slices and water in a large pot or saucepan over high heat on the stove.
3. Bring to a boil. Then turn to low heat and let simmer for approximately 10 minutes.
4. After 10 minutes, add the cinnamon sticks (or ground cinnamon), turmeric and cayenne and simmer on low heat for another 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
5. Remove from heat, let cool and strain.
*This makes about 4-5 cups (some water will steam off while boiling) of a concentrated version of the detox tea which you can store in a glass container in the fridge. You can drink this concentrate warm or cold.
6. When ready to enjoy add the juice of ½ fresh lemon juice to the concentrated mix.
7. I personally like to add ¼ c of this concentrated mixture to 6 oz hot water (with fresh lemon juice).

Here's another great exercise for the shoulder! This will help with external rotation and is beneficial for the rotator cuff!

Steps to perform this exercise
1. stand straight with feet set at shoulder width for stability
2. with the arm you're stretching, start with that elbow at 90 degrees, making sure it is staying fixed at your side (if this is difficult, add a towel to help maintain contact)
3. grip the resistance band so that it comes across the body just bellow the chest
4. pull the band out while keeping that elbow by your side
5. you can repeat these steps for 3 sets of 3-5 for beginners and work up to 10 to build strength and mobility!

Good news for those of you who don't have bands!! You don't actually need one! Just follow the steps without the band, still making sure that the elbow stays close to the body!

Here’s a challenge for you!

We call these “wall angels”. This stretch works the upper back and shoulders, to improve their stability and mobility. You don’t have to be a weightlifter to benefit from a good shoulder stretch! All you need is some empty wall space and a little patience!

To start this stretch, make sure that your heels, upper back, arms, hands, and the back of your head is against the wall. Once you have established this position, you will glide your arms up the wall (like you’re making a snow angel) as high as you can WITHOUT coming away from the wall.

Let us know if you try this one and how you did! Shoulder mobility doesn’t come easily. If you notice, I am limited to how high I can lift my arms without coming off the wall. Don’t get discouraged! You can work this stretch into your daily routine for 3 sets of 5-10 reps a day to help those shoulders function better! Who knows, you may surprise yourself with how well you do after a few weeks of using this exercise!

How Many Calories Do You Burn From Walking? 01/23/2024

Are you getting your daily steps in?



There is a lot of research out there that suggests that walking is one of the most beneficial ways to enhance your health! We all know that daily exercise is important, but sometimes it’s difficult to know where to start! Setting a goal to get in those daily steps is a great starting point and can lead to great results!

Some benefits of walking include:

✅Improved mood
✅Improved cardiovascular health
✅Decreased blood pressure
✅Decreased blood sugar levels
✅Improved strength
✅Weight loss

It’s important to note that some activity is better than none at all! While the recommendation is 10,000 steps a day, that doesn’t mean you have to start there. The average person walks 3,000-4,000 steps a day, so if you’re a beginner you can start there and build each week! You don’t need fancy gadgets to track this either! Most of our phones can keep a count of our steps, so all you need to do is have it in your pocket and go!

Is lack of motivation holding you back? Here’s some tips to help you get in the groove:

✅Play your favorite music
✅Include your family (help the kids drain that extra energy!)
✅Take the dog for a long walk (They will love it!)
✅Park further away when you go to the store
✅Make it part of your lunch routine

Remember, if walking causes additional pain, make sure you manage that before setting a huge goal to reach 10,000 steps, or more. We are here to help you in your journey!

It’s always our goal to help our patients continue to get better through the course of their treatment! Part of that goal is teaching exercises and stretches that are simple and effective, and easy to do at home! You will see some of our favorite exercises posted here weekly over the next few months to stay tuned!

Today we are working on shoulders! This exercise is called the Standing High Row. You will start by holding the resistance band at shoulder level with your arms stretched out in front of you. Your feet should be shoulder width apart to provide stability. Maintaining that shoulder level grip, pull the band towards you thinking about squeezing the shoulder blades at the end of stretch. Repeat 3-5 times for three sets if you’re a beginner. Add in reps as you begin to develop better strength in that area!

This stretch helps with your Traps, Rhomboids and Upper back muscles! Keep an eye out for more stretches like these! Also, please don’t hesitate to ask us about our exercises and join Bree to get some in person instruction to help you get better and stronger! 💪🏻
