Did you know taking too many antibiotics when they are not needed will build antibiotic resistance?

Antibiotic resistance is when bacteria in your body, that are causing an infection, are stronger or smarter than the antibiotic that is given for the infection. When this occurs, providers are required to use stronger and stronger antibiotics to treat what should have been a simple infection.

This can get to the point where the only antibiotic that will treat the infection requires IV therapy and/or hospitalization. Sometimes, it can get to the point where there are only a couple of treatment options left.


The reason antibiotic resistance occurs is the increased use of antibiotics for bacterial causes but also for non-bacterial causes. The non-bacterial use of an antibiotic is the preventable cause of antibiotic resistance.

No one enjoys being sick, but an antibiotic is unfortunately not always the magic pill to feel better.

There are some infections that are always bacterial which require antibiotics for treatment *see picture for examples*.

There are some symptoms that can be caused by a viral OR bacterial infection. These symptoms can include cough, sore throat, nausea/vomiting, and certain headaches (sinus headache or pressure).

When feeling ill, fluids and rest are still the #1 treatment for any infection. After that, it is the provider's job to determine if the infection is to the point of being bacterial or is it still in a viral stage of the illness.

It is important for the provider treating your illness to practice antibiotic stewardship (an effort to measure and improve how antibiotics are prescribed by providers to patients) to prevent antibiotic resistance for you and the community.

This will allow our favorite antibiotics – amoxicillin, doxycycline, or azithromycin – to work for a longer period of time before, unfortunately, bacteria become smarter and that medication no longer works.
