Flower City Critters Small Animal Rescue

Flower City Critters is a foster based 501c3 rescue in Rochester NY dedicated to ensuring the welfare of all small animals and placing them in loving homes

08/22/2024

As of today Flower City Kitties is 100% closed for intake for the foreseeable future.

We still owe over $4,000 in vet bills between the two clinics we use and this needs to be paid off immediately so we can continue vetting the cats we have.

We are completely out of funds to pay off these vet bills and continue to feed the cats in our care.

Today our ask is to help us pay down our debts so we can continue our work.

Donations can be made via:
Credit Card: www.flowercitycrittersrescue.org
Venmo:
PayPal: [email protected]

Donations can also be called into Rochester Community Animal Clinic at 585-288-0600 under Flower City Critters.

We currently have 30+ cats in our care, most of which are ready for adoption and waiting to find forever homes.

We have a small but dedicated team of volunteers. It’s been a difficult summer. We are tired and worn down.

We will also be implementing a policy that any surrendered cats will require a donation of some sort. 90% of the cats coming into our rescue are direct from the streets of Rochester, they have taken priority to ensure they have a safe place to go. The few surrenders that find their way to us take a spot that could go to a homeless kitty. To help us continue our mission we will be requiring a donation going forward.

We are in URGENT need for fosters or fosters-to-adopt.

We have 2-3 more cats to trap at a home in Maplewood that we’ve been working on. And we have 7 more at another house down the same street. All of these cats came from the same house on this street where a woman was hoarding them. All of these cats are friendly.

Moo and Captain Fireballs are just two of the cats we’ve been working with.

Daniel Tiger was completely vetted yesterday and is ready for immediate adoption. He also desperately needs a foster until his forever home is found.

This endeavor has been costly. We have already brought in 7 cats from this street and some of the older ones needed more extensive vet care. One woman’s hoard became a problem for multiple neighbors and for us and in the end will cost us thousands of dollars.

We are reaching out to all of our to consider fostering or adopting.

And please SHARE with your friends, family, neighbors.

The cats in this city are in crisis and we are determined to do our small part to help them.

Update: All are gone

We have some random small cages if anyone is interested otherwise to the curb they’ll go soon.

Like so many others we are officially CLOSED FOR INTAKE until we can get this bill down to at least $2,000 or less.

Adoptions have been steady. We have a dedicated team of fosters. But donations are at an all time low. The same few people continue to support us - for which we are eternally grateful - but it’s not enough.

We are exhausted. Emotionally. Physically.
The calls for help do not stop. Saying no kills us but we have no choice. We will no longer be replying to emails or messages asking for help until we are in a position to say yes.

We have a few cats in Maplewood we are committed to helping but beyond that we are closed.

Until the bill is paid down we are unable to schedule any appointments. We can’t take in cats if we are unable to vet them.

It is critical that we find a way to get this paid.

Donations can be made:
Credit Card: www.flowercitycrittersrescue.org/donate
PayPal: [email protected]

Check: PO BOX 10119 Rochester NY 14610

Or payment can be called into Rochester Community Animal Clinic and paid directly to our account.

This weekend we sadly said goodbye to our sweet senior girl Marbles. She was only with the rescue briefly but was with her caretaker long enough to leave a lasting impact.

Marbles is one of the many strays we are working to help in Maplewood. Sadly her story didn’t get the happy ending we hope for.

Already stretched beyond our limits we brought Marbles in for a check up and bloodwork last week. Bloodwork came back overall unremarkable. But over the next few days we found something to be very wrong with miss Marbles as she stopped eating and became weaker. With the help of her devoted caretaker we decided it was time to let Marbles go. We are eternally grateful for the devotion this caretaker has to the cats that find her.

Rescue is hard. It is exhausting. We are stretched beyond our limits in every way possible.

We have unpaid bills for Marbles and so many other cats piling up. We need help.

Please donate in Marbles memory and in the memory of every beloved pet that showed her the way across the rainbow bridge.

We desperately need help paying off our nearly $6,000 in vet bills before we can continue to help cats like Marbles.

Please share!

Payments towards our bill can also be called into Rochester Community Animal Clinic (Monday-Thursday 9am-2pm).

📣📣 PLEA FOR HELP 📣📣

We have a situation. Our homebase neighborhood is Maplewood. We have a friend who also lives in the neighborhood who has been feeding and caring for ‘community cats’ that come to her house. The situation has become overwhelming and dire for her.

All of these cats are friendly. Only a small handful are true ferals.

We NEED to get these cats vetted and into homes. To do this we need DONATIONS as well as FOSTERS / ADOTPERS.

Here is the story in her words, as she mentions Lollypop is not acknowledging the truth of the situation. Many of these cats were altered and chipped at Lollypop previously. They’re claiming they were just TNRs. Lollypop gets millions in funding and donations each year. While small independent rescues like us are drowning in debt. We need more funds and more help to continue our mission. We will not turn our backs on these guys as so many have before.

The Story:
Backyard cat drama 3: I finally sat down the other night and listed all the different cats I see regularly enough to recognize them. You guys, it's 14 cats. All released from one house down the street where the owner moved out and abandoned them at the end of March. And I know there are others that another woman is feeding. These are just the ones that have ventured as far as my house.

Lollypop Farm doesn't want to know about it and isn't going to help. In talking to people on the street, I saw pictures someone had taken from inside the house before the cats were released. She counted 42 of them inside, with many living in cages. It was awful.

Two things about this really make me angry (beyond the obvious). One is that, while I want to find help for these cats, they're pushing the Minion away at a time when I really need to be able to feed him. The other is that, as I look at these cats' physical characteristics and personalities, I'm realizing that ALL the friendly cats I've had to get trapped and rescued over the past year have most likely originated from that house.

It's incredible that one twisted person (and there's a ton more I'm hearing about her besides just the animal hoarding) can cause this much trouble for their neighbors and there are no resources to help us.

This is beyond the normal "cat drama" that's been fun and engrossing to watch from my windows, like a bird feeder. This is a crisis and I'm becoming overwhelmed by it.

Stop into The Pawsitive Cafe- and The Friendly Feline Cat Cafe to visit our wonderful kitties.

More information on each kitty and where they are located can be found on our website.

Unfortunately we are on intake hold until our current kitties get adopted and we pay down our $5,000+ vet bill.

🚨🚨 DONATIONS NEEDED 🚨🚨

As we wrap up June we already have found ourselves beyond capacity with recent intake of both cats and kittens. We also find ourselves financially stretched beyond our means. We currently have 33 cats and kittens in our care; all adult cat have been vetted and are waiting adoption while kittens are currently receiving vetting and becoming available.

We owe almost $6,000 to the clinic we use and this need to be paid down immediately for us to continue to provide care to our cats. We have been forced to close intake so we can focus on the cats in our care and work to get this bill paid off.

Every dollar helps!! When everyone pitches in even $1 it adds up so fast and gets us back on track.

📣📣 Adoption Alert

Maple and Violet are a bonded pair of guinea pigs. Maple is the mom she is about 5 years old and violet, her daughter is 3 years old. They are the sweetest guinea pigs in the world! Maple is a quiet introvert and will hide from us but as soon as we scoop her up she is a cuddlebug! She rarely makes a peep, but Violet on the other hand is a bit more of a squeaker, when it's veggie time she lets us know it! Their favorite treat is carrots and parsley. Their coloring is beautiful, Maple has two black feet and two white feet, which is so cute! And Violet is a mix of white, tan and brown- We say she's vanilla, caramel and chocolate! They come with their cage and all their hides, toys and other supplies. They are great with children as long and they are gentle and kind.

Shared from another rescue group:

I feel like the general public has no idea what the animal crisis currently is. So here's an update:

- The animal shelters are full
- The rescues are full
- No kill shelters are full
- Adoptions are at an all time low
- Donations are at a all time low
- Intake is at an all time high
- Euthanasia for space is at an all time high

-Signed an exhausted rescue volunteer

The reality is our rescue is run by ONE person. ONE person with the help of maybe five fosters/volunteers. We don’t have the man power to fundraise right now. We entered 2024 still spaying/neutering kittens from last year and now owe $4,000 to the clinic we use that needs to be paid immediately. We cannot take in more cats until our bills are paid. But the requests for help do not stop.

In 2023 we saved 175 cats with a skeleton crew. My hope for 2024 was 200. As things are now that won’t happen. Not even close. We need more funding. We need more volunteers to help fundraise. We need more fosters.

Update

Mary had a seizure while at the vet last night and her bloodwork came back very poor. After weighing our options and considering her fast decline and current condition we made the difficult decision to let Mary go peacefully.

We are thankful for everyone’s support and contributions. The donations we took in last night covered most of our bill.

Any additional donations made in Mary’s memory will help us cover the remainder and continue to help kitties like Mary.

We need everyone’s thoughts, prayers, and donations tonight.

We are currently at the emergency vet with one of our long term fosters, Mary.

Within the last few hours Mary has presented with some pretty severe symptoms including imbalance/falling over, dehydration, decreased to no appetite, and jaundice.

Mary has been with the rescue for almost four years and is beloved by her foster. We are in no way prepared to financially handle this emergency but will do everything we can for Mary.

Any donations - every $1 helps! - would be greatly appreciated.
