We are sad to share the news that Betsy Phillips, a founder of Image City Photograph Gallery in 2005, has passed away. Her vocation was a caseworker for Monroe County Child Protective Services, but her true love and avocation was an artist/photographer. Her abstracts from man-made and urban environments demonstrated her fascination with reflections, shadow and textures and the impact that time, happen-stance, and light have on objects. She once said, “Our thoughts are impacted by our surroundings but are not true reflections of what we see and hear.”
For the past number of years her role at Image City was as a curator for each of our 13 annual exhibits and performed much of the graphic design for the Gallery. She also was a member of the Artists Breakfast Group as well as a member and graphic designer of the ARENA Art Group.
Our thoughts are with her family, her longtime partner Phillip Halla and those whose lives she touched. All of us will miss Betsy’s friendly, gentle nature and her devotion and work for the arts.
An Image City Blog post written by Partner Marie Costanza about Betsy may be found at: https://imagecityblog.com/2022/10/04/october-featured-photographer-betsy-phillips/

Nancy Guzauski garners a Gallery Pick for “Beauty Parlor Chairs, Greystone State Hospital.” Her display of abandoned long stay psychiatric hospitals are ironic statement and extended metaphors for treatment of patients in the hospitals from the late 1800s as well as after their closure in the 1980s. In the hospital their treatment was anything but what may be accomplished in the two chairs and after their release the lack of planning and resources were inadequate to their needs. To see the rest of Nancy’s photographs and those created by 56 other photographers in the Photographers’ Journey Exhibit, stop by Image City through September 1.
Nick Jospe’s exhibit of the Dolomite Mountains in northern Italy is breathtaking. Congratulations to Nick for his Gallery Pick of “The Tre Cime di Lavaredo.” What is usually a rendering of the three peaks of this mountain, Nick pulls away to show us the multiple paths and lighting through the landscape. In this way he entices the viewer to walk along with him through the scene. To see all of Nick’s wonderful display as well as photos created by 56 other photographers in the Photographers’ Journey Exhibit, stop by Image City through September 1.
Steve Dent continues his Visiting Artist Exhibit (Part 2) with his “fractured” theme. His Gallery Pick, entitled “Lydia,” is a unique image printed on rice paper and carefully mounted on natural wood panels. This contrast is gracefully reflected in the scene itself---where the ephemeral human presence meets the timeless grandeur of the earth. To experience Steve’s unique art and the photos created by 56 other photographers, visit Image City until September 1.
Congratulations to Rick Waugh for his Galley Pick winning photo entitled “Good Morning.” In a stunning display of natural beauty juxtaposed within a common neighborhood in Florida, Rick’s photograph offers viewers a captivating journey into the tranquil beginnings of the day. Evoking a sense of reflection, the image reminds us of the serene moments in the early morning before the hustle and bustle of daily life. To see all of Rick’s photos as well as photos created by 56 other photographers in the Photographers’ Journey Exhibit, stop by Image City until September 1.

Joe Altieri has earned a Gallery Pick for his stunning photograph “Star Trails over Sodus Point.” In this masterful composition, Joe weaves together the striking elements of the Sodus Lighthouse, a vibrant sunset over Lake Ontario, and mesmerizing star trails revolving around Polaris. The seamless transition of evening light—from the bright, warm hues of the setting sun, through the serene blue twilight, to the rich magenta tones, and finally to the deep, cold blue-black of space—creates a captivating and multidimensional scene. Experience Joe’s extraordinary photos and the works of 19 other talented photographers in the “Celestial Lights” exhibit at Image City, on display through August 4.
Neal Bourque’s storytelling is a standout feature in this month’s exhibit at Image City. His photograph “Arriving at Port Soon” has earned a prestigious Gallery Pick. Through the masterful use of angle, soft lighting, and a calming palette, Neal transforms a simple scene of a traveler gazing out a window into a profound narrative of quiet anticipation and introspection. Explore the rest of Neal’s captivating works alongside those of 19 other talented photographers in our featured show “Celestial Lights” at Image City, on display through August 4.
Congratulations to Steve Dent for his Gallery Pick, “Plum Blossom Sadness,” currently on display with his other unique portraits. His use of rectangular sections effectively frame his subject with a central vertical rectangle capturing the essence of the photograph, including the model’s face glancing downward while her hands play with her hair. The other rectangles contain her arms and elbow that complete the flowing image. Steve is a frequent artist at Image City and will be displaying other photos over the next 3 months as a Visiting Artist. Visit Image City between now and August 4 to see Steve’s photos as well as photos by 21 other photographers.
Tom Knauss has 3 images in the Celestial Lights exhibit. His Gallery Pick photo, “Milky Way,” is a panoramic photograph, which includes eight images and captures a moment of natural harmony, where the day and night seem to hold a brief, yet magnificent conversation across the expanse of the sky. It is an image that transcends the ordinary, whisking viewers away to the serene landscape of Beaver Creek in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, where the Milky Way smiles down on the rugged beauty of the terrain. One cannot help but feel a profound sense of awe and tranquility while gazing at this image. Visitors can view Tom’s photos and photos by 21 other photographers until August 4.
Margy Meath, a regular exhibitor at Image City, has received a Gallery Pick for her image entitled Roads Less Traveled. In her image, Margy invites us along the road less traveled that leads to two places: a farm—a place that is all about home, the earth, and just beyond the hill and into the sky, to the Milky Way and the star-filled universe where wonder is at home. The photograph beautifully expresses these aspects of our human experience with gentle and very effective use of composition. To see Margy’s photo as well as those exhibited by 19 other photographers, visit Image City through August 4.
Congratulations to Michelle Turner, whose image entitled “The Art Teacher,” is recognized as a Gallery Pick. Michelle’s image, which is part of her Southeast Asia collection on display in the Neuberger Gallery, is a compelling photo capturing an intimate and candid moment between two individuals, in a learning or mentorship setting. Michelle’s photograph has a story-telling quality to it, leaving viewers curious about the relationship between the two individuals, the nature of their exchange, and the content of their work. Come to Image City until August 4 to see Michelle’s photos as well as those by 21 other photographers.

Congratulations to Tom Kredo, who is recipient of a Gallery Pick for his “Owl Wing” image. Tom has captured several photos of Short-eared owls in flight and at rest. “Owl Wing” is particularly interesting because Tom has caught the illusion that this bird has an extraordinarily large right wing. The light on the owl’s face and wing edge defines the direction he is intently heading. To see Tom’s display, as well as photos by 16 other photographers, visit Image City through July 7.
Congratulations to Betsy Lewis, a Gallery Pick recipient for her “French Quarter” image. This intriguing multi-layer photo asks the viewer to become a participant in the scene---from a French Quarter balcony in the evening, lights ablaze on the street below that stretches into the distance. Betsy’s display includes other multi-layered images that visitors can enjoy taking time to explore. Visitors can see Betsy’s images and photos by 16 other photographers in the “Home” Exhibit until July 7.
d. dargan teska brings many different styles of photography over the many times she has exhibited her photography at Image City. This display ventures into infrared photography. In a set of four complementary photographs “Once Upon a Time” receives a Gallery Pick. Think of any fairy tale as the protagonist ventures into the unknown over a bridge in a pastoral setting that belies what’s ahead. However, Infrared presents the ‘color’ of the image in a completely different way even from a black & white photo. If you are not familiar with Infrared, or even if you are, visit the gallery to see d. dargan’s beautiful world. Congratulations, d. dargan and thank you for sharing your skills with us. See the rest of d. dargan’s photographs and those of 16 other photographers through July 7. By the way, the Gallery will be closed on July 4, to celebrate the holiday.
A walk along the Niagara River last December gave Michael Shoemaker a much different view than a usual winter would. One photo especially stood out as a Gallery Pick. Taken on a bright day, “Break Wall” has strong compositional themes of leading lines, triangles and subtle color. Michael has developed a soothing and serene scene by the river. Congratulations, Michael! See the rest of Michael’s photographs and those of 16 other photographers through July 7.

Through skillful composition, effective lighting, and a keen eye for detail, Dick Beery has received a Gallery Pick for his image, "Black-crowned Night Heron," which illustrates a moment of quiet splendor and invites viewers to pause, reflect and appreciate the wonders of the avian realm. All of Dick’s "Birds of Florida" images in his display serve as a reminder of the delicate balance of ecosystems and the enduring allure of wildlife in its purest form. Congratulations, Dick, for your Gallery Pick! To see Dick's photos and images by 16 other photographers, visit Image City from June 11-July 7.
