In auto insurance, there are two main types of physical damage losses to your car: losses caused by collision and losses not caused by collision. The auto insurance coverages for these two types of losses are often referred to as collision coverage and comprehensive coverage.
What Is Comprehensive Coverage?
Comprehensive car insurance is auto insurance that provides coverage for loss to a vehicle caused by an object, disaster, animal impact or theft. It also provides coverage for loss to a vehicle caused by fire, falling objects, explosions or other unexpected, non-collision-related disasters. Comprehensive insurance does not cover bodily injury.

Collision car insurance is auto insurance that provides coverage for loss to a vehicle caused by an auto accident. Collision coverage reimburses the insured for the cost of repairs or replacement of a vehicle after an auto accident.

You can usually purchase collision coverage without comprehensive coverage, but you will usually need to purchase collision coverage in order to add comprehensive coverage to an auto insurance policy.

Loans and Leases Usually Require Comprehensive Coverage
If you lease your vehicle or took out a loan to buy it, the dealership or bank probably required you to purchase comprehensive coverage. They may have also mandated a certain comprehensive coverage deductible amount. Be sure you understand these requirements when you talk to your insurance agent about coverage for your new vehicle.
Do You Need It?
Comprehensive car insurance may be most useful for owners of vehicles that are less than 5 years old. The premium for comprehensive coverage and collision coverage can account for 30% to 40% of your total premium. However, if you do not purchase either of these coverages, you will likely have to pay to repair or replace your vehicle in the event of an accident that is your fault, or if your vehicle gets totaled or stolen.
Factor in the Deductible
If you decide to carry collision and comprehensive coverage (whether your car is 5 or 15 years old), you should carefully consider your deductibles based on what you can afford. Deductibles directly affect your premium.

University Hills secretary Olga Frans was met with a standing ovation and great applause at the school staff meeting, where she was honored with an Excellence in Education Award from the RCS Foundation.

Nominated by students, parents and colleagues, Ms. Frans models professionalism, efficiency and grace. She has a beyond-the-call-of-duty commitment to student success and well-being, and her involvement in extracurricular school activities helps build a vibrant, supportive school environment.

Michele Beitelshees of the Pino Insurance Agency provides each Excellence in Education winner with a generous donation to be used for a school-related project or program. Congratulations and thanks to Ms. Frans for her exemplary service to RCS.

Jo Anna Pillsbury, teacher and theatre director at Adams High School and director of the RCS Summer Music Theatre program, was honored with an Excellence in Education Award. She was nominated by colleagues and students for encouraging all individuals in class and onstage to set challenges and push themselves to their fullest potential. Ms. Pillsbury is well known for respecting students’ voices, adapting to meet the needs of all learners and sharing wisdom that extends beyond the classroom.

She was selected from 88 candidates and was awarded a $650 donation to benefit her students. The award is presented by the Rochester Community Schools Foundation in partnership with Michele Beitelshees and the Pino Insurance Agency. Congratulations!

The Rochester Community Schools Board of Education voted on April 8 to approve the superintendent contract for Nicholas Russo who will begin his term on July 1, 2024.

“As an experienced teacher, principal and executive administrator, Mr. Russo has a demonstrated track record of excellence. Through a steadfast commitment to serving all RCS students, a passionate approach to building relationships, an intentional focus on business operations, and an emphasis on our strategic plan, we are confident that Mr. Russo can lead our district to new heights,” said Michelle Bueltel, board president.

Russo brings over 26 years of educational leadership to RCS. Prior positions include serving as the assistant superintendent of human resources at Walled Lake Consolidated Schools, principal of Conant Elementary in the Bloomfield Hills School District, and principal of Beacon Tree and Jack Harvey Elementary in the Utica Community School District.

Russo earned an educational specialist degree in executive leadership from the University of Michigan, a master’s degree in educational leadership from Wayne State and a bachelor’s degree in education from Michigan State. He is a graduate of the Michigan Leadership Institute’s SUPES Academy and holds a Michigan Central Office certificate.

Russo states that his leadership approach “prioritizes collaboration, inclusivity and responsiveness to the needs of students and the community,” and he is committed to “fostering environments where both students and staff can thrive, advocating strongly for inclusion and equal access for all.”

"I am deeply honored and excited to lead a teaching and learning community that values tradition, student achievement and excellence. Working alongside dedicated RCS teachers, administrators, staff, parents, caregivers and community partners is an incredible opportunity,” said Russo. “Together, we can build strong relationships that lay the foundation for student success.”
