Happy Columbus Day and Indigenous' Peoples Day.
Goodbye, Columbus? Here's what Indigenous Peoples' Day means to Native Americans A movement recast the second Monday in October as a day to appreciate the history of Indigenous communities. That visibility, say Native Americans, can help us see what else needs to change.

Liz Collins is well-known for pushing the boundaries of art and design in innovative and experimental work in fabric, yarn, and other materials and techniques associated with textile media. Although Collins embraces a language of abstraction, bold colors, patterns, and symbols allude to q***r and feminist references, sourcing further inspiration from interpersonal and environmental forces such as electricity, volatility, connectivity, and energy exchange. Whether in the form of textile, painting, drawing, or installation, Collins frequently explores the dichotomy of structure and entropy—qualities inherent to textile that speak to the fissures present in broader architectural, political, and social structures.
Collins’s current and forthcoming exhibitions include the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, Foreigners Everywhere, curated by Adriano Pedrosa, and Woven Histories: Textiles and Modern Abstraction, curated by Lynne Cooke, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, ON; and The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY. In 2025, Collins will have a mid-career retrospective curated by Kate Irvin at the RISD Museum in Providence, RI, with an accompanying monograph.
Collins has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Knoxville Museum of Art, Knoxville, TN; the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, NY; the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery, Saratoga Springs, NY; Touchstones Rochdale, Rochdale, UK, among others. She has been featured in group exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA; the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art, New York, NY; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; the New Museum, New York, NY; The Drawing Center, New York, NY; and The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY, among others. In 2020, the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery released Liz Collins — Energy Field, the artist’s first major publication.

Alma Cruz, the celebrated writer at the heart of The Cemetery of Untold Stories, doesn’t want to end up like her friend, a novelist who fought so long and hard to finish a book that it threatened her sanity. So when Alma inherits a small plot of land in the Dominican Republic, her homeland, she has the beautiful idea of turning it into a place to bury her untold stories—literally. She creates a graveyard for the manuscript drafts and the characters whose lives she tried and failed to bring to life and who still haunt her.
Readers will be excited to pair this novel with the September 2024 release of American Masters: Julia Alvarez on PBS, chronicaling the life and work of one of the most critically and commercially successful Latina writers of her generation.

September marks the 50th anniversary of President Gerald R. Ford's pardon of former President Richard Nixon. Over the past five decades, that act has been both vilified and then lionized as a great act of patriotism.
Five decades later, what is the significance of that unique, historical pardon? PBS Books is delighted to share a discussion with four legal experts on the significance of the Nixon pardon, in an appearance recorded at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy.
The discussion features University of Michigan law professor and former U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade, former Watergate prosecutor Jill Wine-Banks, Nixon White House Counsel John Dean and University of Baltimore Law School professor Kimberly Wehle.
