You’re going about your day, and suddenly you’re hit with a thought that’s bizarre, uncomfortable, and nothing like you.

Intrusive thoughts are NORMAL. Everyone has intrusive thoughts, and it's usually the brain's way of reminding us what we do NOT want to do. We shouldn't be ashamed of our intrusive thoughts because we cannot control them, just as we cannot control what happens in our dreams.

Reminder: You are not a bad person for having intrusive thoughts.

Most intrusive thoughts will pass and you'll usually forget about them. However, sometimes, intrusive thoughts can get out of hand. If your thoughts are causing you a lot of distress or getting in the way of your daily life, it could be a sign that you should talk to a professional.

The next time they occur, try to remember that there is a difference between a thought and an action; don't waste your time trying to push the thought out of your mind. Just let it pop in and roll right out again. And don't hesitate to share the thought with a friend.
