Healing from trauma does not have to be centered around the event(s). Talk therapy, or CBT, can be beneficial for so many reasons, but it can often leave those who are healing from trauma feeling overexposed, frustrated, and unsupported.
That's because talking about trauma without a foundation of safety causes your nervous system to re-live the same trauma; over and over again.
Our nervous system is designed to protect us in moments of emergency. But being stuck in survival mode is not supposed to be your everyday experience.
Re-teaching your nervous system that it's safe, gathering the tools to work through stress, and providing it with the support it needs to heal day after day allows your nervous system to regain it's sense of safety, shift out of overdrive, and allow you to have more flexibility with everyday stressors.
This is for everyone who has been told they don't look sad enough to feel depressed or that because they're functioning, there's no way they can have anxiety.
You are not your feelings and you do not have to look or act like them 100% of the time for them to be valid.
We never know what someone else is going through, be kind! π±
Gretchen Rubin categorized mental energy into 4 levels:
1οΈβ£ Contemplative Energy means you're ready for planning, deciding, creating, inhibiting (holding yourself back from saying, doing, or thinking something), setting priorities, making transitions
2οΈβ£ Engagement Energy consists of talking to other people; reading or observing, using critical thinking
3οΈβ£ Audience Energy looks more like passively watching or listening
4οΈβ£ Habit Energy is solely mindlessly executing a habitual behavior
These levels of mental energy can be a helpful tool used to identify where your needs are at. If you're faced with a level 1 task but your mental energy is at a level 3, you're going to have a really difficult time completing that task.
Depending on what level you're at, you can prioritize your tasks, schedule in time for self-care, and reach out for support if needed.
These numerical cues can be useful when feelings are messy & complicated!
What level are you today?
πI think my friend might be considering su***de, what do I do?π
β Have they been showing some common signs of suicidality recently?
β Ask them! You won't put any ideas in their mind that they haven't already thought of.
β Stay with them or make sure they're not alone!
β Put away all means they could use to harm themselves.
β Need guidance or support? Contact a helpline, 911, or bring them to your local emergency room!
β Be prepared that they may be upset at you through this and unwilling to accept help but their safety is the most important thing!

π±It's okay if today turned out differently than you expected ββββββββ

πΏ Unclench Your JawπΏ ββββββββ
ββββββββ
Where we hold tension can tell us a lot about what we're feeling. In any regard, the purpose of tension is not to be annoying, painful, or harmful, but it's actually the opposite. When we tense our muscle, it's to protect ourselves. Whether physically or emotionally, the body doesn't really know the difference. But the location that's tense can tell a story about your experiences:ββββββββ
ββββββββ
π΅ Tension in your head could mean you're fast approaching burnout, if you're not already there. ββββββββ
π΅ Tension in your jaw is indicating that your body is in survival mode, or that it feels like it is during your sleep. The natural position of the jaw is with your tongue at the roof of your mouth gently behind the teeth, teeth slightly parted, and lips just pressed to close. ββββββββ
π΅ Stomach tension tends to be very emotional, or even grief. It may be time to let go of toxic relationships or major stressors. But in the meantime, a focus on diaphragmatic breathing can help regulate ββββββββ
π΅ The shoulder/neck area tends to mean we're feeling overworked & overburdened. As if "the weight of the world was on our shoulders". ββββββββ
π΅ Tension in the lower back could mean you've been holding in some anger or feeling that your stability is being threatened. ββββββββ
π΅ Hips hold a lot of repressed sexual energy, tensions, or trauma, and can also be a sign of inflexibility. ββββββββ
ββββββββ
πΏ What is your tension telling you?

π "I tell them that we can choose to be perfect and admired, or to be real and loved. We must decide. If we choose to be perfect and admired, we must send our representatives out to live our lives. If it's e choose to be real and loved, we must send our true, tender selves. That's the only way because to be loved, we have to be known. If we choose to introduce our true selves to anyone, we will get hurt, but we will be hurt either way. There is pain in hiding and pain outside of hiding. The pain outside is better because nothing hurts as bad as not being know."β β β β β β β β β
