As with most mysteries, thinking about beauty brings us into deep and often choppy waters. The concept of beauty has been abused and misused in all sorts of philosophical, theological, ethical, social, and cultural ways.

“high art”), disassociated from its function in everyday life (“art for art’s sake”), attached to certain kinds of bodies (skinny, proportionate, white), leveraged for oppressive agendas (racialized, colonial aesthetics), reduced to whatever produces pleasant feelings (like the sentimentality of Christian kitsch), and utilized to sell products and line pockets (especially within capitalist economies). It’s a fraught history, and for these reasons and others some contemporary artists and thinkers have abandoned beauty as a description or goal of their work.
Beauty is notoriously difficult to define...

It was all about Friday...
Started on the campus of Winthrop University in the Fall of 2006, Friday Arts Project met weekly on Friday mornings to discuss art and culture and to critique the creativity of their imaginations. Some of these same students kept these types of activities going after graduation. 10+ years later we are a 501c3 non-profit.
Friday Arts Project’s mission is that we are an arts collective curating conversation and fostering craft to call forth a fully human community. We do this because we believe our vision, Beauty Exists where Truth and Goodness meet Mystery - Art advances the celebration of this intersection. And in these endeavors we value Generosity, Wonder and Craft.
