Do you have loaned equipment checked out through the Office of Accessibility? If you are not attending for the upcoming spring semester, you must return your device to the OA Test Center no later than 5:00 pm on Wednesday, December 13. If you are attending in the spring semester and need to keep your device, you must show as registered in Banner. If not, you will still need to return the device and can check it back out once you have registered. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Equipment must be returned in working condition along with any additional materials (e.g, smartpen charger, cap, and/or manual). Please email Karen Medlin at [email protected] to make an appointment to return items. She is the only OA staff member that monitors loaned equipment.

Let her know as soon as possible so she can update our records. If she has not heard from you by the due date, the amount of the loaned item will be placed on your student account, which can result in a hold. Please note, Karen is working on a limited schedule during final exams and may not be available on certain days/times if you do not return your device before then.

There is a big focus on disability inclusion and accessibility during National Disability Employment Awareness Month. These organizations need to remember, accessibility is not a problem to be solved. It’s a culture to be built. In building that culture, organizations need to focus on disability, inclusion, and accessibility every day of the year not just in October.

The OA Test Center final exam test request deadline is Monday, November 20 by 5:00 pm. Because of the enormous amount of planning that goes into final exams for hiring additional proctors and reserving additional testing space, NO TEST REQUESTS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THE DEADLINE.

The only acceptable exam start times are 8:00am, 11:30am, and 3:00pm. Exams that take place at 6:30pm will be scheduled at an alternate time (upon OA Test Center approval).

In recent years, our community has grown louder protesting the inhumane, often-dangerous experiences wheelchair users must endure when flying. Kenny Salvini looks behind the scenes for any signs of progress and finds that while current conditions are as bad as ever, there are glimmers of hope, including a recent rule that will require accessible restrooms and progress on seating solutions that could allow people to fly seated in their own wheelchairs.

*I feel now I’ve got a feeding tube stuck to my face my illness isn’t as invisible, although people could never understand why, but for this post I chose an image to before I had it.*

Dealing with and (as well as some others 🥴) means my normal is what you see on the right. I think after years of getting on with it, you don’t even realise what you contend with on the regular, it’s kinda mental seeing it all written down.

This awareness week is so important as you never know what someone is dealing with by looking at them, underneath they could have a whole host of invisible chronic illnesses, always be mindful 💫

October has begun, which means midterms will be here soon.

If you know a student who hasn't registered with the Office of Accessibility, but thinks they want accommodations on their midterms, tell them to register TODAY!

They should be aware that the initial registration process may take anywhere from a day to a few weeks from start to finish, and they may not have an answer from the Office of Accessibility (OA) in time for midterms. Applications are processed on a first come/first served basis.

If they are already registered for testing accommodations, they will need to submit test requests in AIM at least a week before the exam date. Check out our website for more info about our services: https://www.winthrop.edu/student-affairs/accessibility/
