Tick Repellant: There are many different bug/tick repellents on the market. Many repellents contain harsh chemicals such as permethrin or DEET.
❌DEET has some concerns which include risk of neurological symptoms and CDC recommends lower concentrations for use on children.
🌿There are many natural repellents out there, but none have the same efficacy as Lemon-eucalyptus essential oil (derived from Eucalyptus citriodora plant).
✅This oil is registered with the EPA and is recommended by the CDC for use for repelling ticks. Lemon-eucalyptus essential oil is safe for ages 3+ and can be purchased at our office in Rockport.
April Showers Bring May…Ticks?
Have you been noticing more ticks? I sure have! I don’t think the ticks have arrived just because it's Lyme Disease Awareness Month.
As the temperatures warm up the deer ticks (and other creatures) make their way out into the world. Those deer ticks love to feast on humans. Approximately 400,000 new cases of Lyme disease are diagnosed each year. Many cases also go undiagnosed because the symptoms of Lyme disease are varied and can affect many different systems of the body, such as the nervous system, cardiovascular system, and musculoskeletal system.
🧫Did you know? Deer ticks can carry many different diseases that can be transmitted to humans, not just Lyme Disease. Some other diseases include Bartonella, Babesia, Anaplasmosis, and Ehrlichia.
🩸Have I been bitten? Deer Ticks can be so small they are hard to spot, like the size of a tiny freckle or 2mm. Even these teeny-tiny ones can carry diseases and you may never know you had a tick bite.
🎯No Rash? Up to 30% of Lyme disease cases will never develop a rash.
🦵No Joint Pain? Many cases of Lyme disease include joint pain, but many do not. This is because the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi, can infect other parts of your body such as your heart, nerves, brain, and muscles.1
⁉️Concerned you have a tick-borne disease? I recommended seeing a naturopathic doctor or healthcare provider for evaluation to determine the cause of your symptoms.
Hydrotherapy is the therapeutic use of water. Water has had a long history of use in medicine over thousands of years.
💧Hydrotherapy harnesses the healing power of water to create balance and support health in the body. There are many different types of treatments options and the most common one used by naturopathic doctors for hundreds of years is constitutional hydrotherapy.
💦Constitutional Hydrotherapy consists of a specific application of alternating hot and cold water to the chest, abdomen and back, while being wrapped in a wool blanket.
💦This special application of water alters the blood and lymph flow in the body, which increases circulation and detoxification pathways, as well as modulate immune system and digestive system functioning. Additionally, this treatment stimulates the parasympathic nervous system—aka “rest and digest”, which allows for stress reduction.
💧Atlas Naturopathic Health Center currently offers constitutional to established patients and to patients with a referral.
What’s Clean about these 15 foods?
They all have very low or no pesticides on them! That means you don’t need to spend money buying these foods as organic, especially if you’re on a budget.
🥑 I recommend buying organic foods as much as you can, but sometimes it isn’t possible either because they are available as organic or the price point is too high. Knowing which produce are safe to buy conventionally grown and which you should buy organic helps make shopping easier. Who doesn’t like easy?
🌱Who determines this this? The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that annually tests the top 46 most popular fruits & veggies for pesticides. They also are a great resource to see if other products you use in your home are safe. Check out their website for more information: www.ewg.org.
🩺I am accepting new patients at Atlas Naturopathic Health Center. I offer complimentary 15-minute phone consults to see if naturopathic medicine is the right fit for your needs.
For more information please visit https://www.atlasnaturopathic.com or call 207-466-9079.
I typically recommend eating organic foods as much as possible. However, if you’re on a budget buying organic can be overwhelming. At a minimum I recommend buying organic for the foods listed on the Dirty Dozen: top 12 foods contaminated with pesticides.
🌱 Why should you care? Consumption of pesticides has profound health effects especially long-term exposure. You may not be able to completely eliminate pesticides in your life, but there is a lot that you can do to lower the toxic burden, such as buying organic when possible, especially foods on the dirty dozen list!

Hot flashes? Night sweats? Mood changes? Changes in weight? S*x not the same as it used to be? You may be one of nearly 60 million women who experience menopausal symptoms.
The female cycle is more complex than the phases of the moon and transitioning through menopause into the next cycle of life can be challenging for many women. You don’t need to suffer for years through these symptoms. There are many different options to support your body through this huge physical and emotional transition into a new phase of your life.
🌎The Naturopathic Approach: Dr. Alison Maloof says “each woman is unique and her treatment plan should reflect that uniqueness.” Addressing all aspects of a woman’s life that determine her health and correcting imbalances in those aspects set the foundation for a healthy life and to have hormonal transitions with more ease and less discomfort.
✅ Assessing Risk Factors: It is essential during this phase of a woman’s life to assess for additional risk factors for conditions such as osteoporosis, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, breast health and more.
🍏 Nutrients: Many nutrients are vital in regulating hormones in the female body and are even more important during times of transitions. Eating nutrient rich foods, high amounts of fiber, and a variety of healthy proteins and fats will help fuel your body.
🌿Botanicals: There are many different herbs/botanicals that support female hormones and using these correctly can help reduce symptoms of menopause, such as lessoning or eliminating hot flashes, improving anxiety/depression, or increasing libido.
🌹Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): This can be a great option for many patients, once risk factors for other conditions have been assessed and HRT deemed safe. Dr. Maloof’s advice about menopause and transitioning with ease!

The Big “Pause”—Wellness Wednesdays with Dr. Alison Maloof, ND - By Atlas Naturopathic Health Center Hot flashes? Night sweats? Mood changes? Changes in weight? S*x not the same as it used to be? You may be one of nearly 60 million women who experience menopausal symptoms.
Dr. Maloof’s gives her top advice for helping you clear out acne for good!
Your skin is the largest organ of the body and it deserves to be well cared for. Your skin is the barrier to the outside world and helps protect you every minute of the day.
Skin conditions, especially acne, can be burden not only physically but emotionally as well. Skin conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis are often an inside out problem, meaning there is an underlying cause for your acne. Acne is not because of a lack of a skincare product, but some skincare products can make acne worse.
Dr. Maloof’s Top Advice for Clear Skin
❌ Aggravating Foods: Eating these aggravating foods causes inflammation in your GI tract and throughout your body. Gut health is associated with skin health. Poor digestion of food leads to lower levels of nutrients, vitamins and minerals.
❌ Sub-Optimal Liver Function: Dr. Maloof calls the liver “the most heroic organ.” The liver is responsible for filtering the blood, producing bile which helps digest your food, removing toxins, and producing certain proteins and cholesterol. Giving the liver support in order for it to do its job at an optimal level helps clear out the toxins that can cause acne
❌ Hormone imbalance: Hormones are a vital part of health and if out of balance can be the culprit of skin conditions including acne. There are many hormones in the body such as estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and more. Creating a healthy balance of hormones supports your skin’s health and reduces acne lesions.
❌ Damaging skincare: Switching to safe and effective topical support for your acne is part of Dr. Maloof’s protocol for patients with acne and she says “this includes makeup too!”
❌ Stress: Chronic stress is associated with acne. Dr. Maloof recommends many different stress management options for patients such as meditation, exercise, in-office hydrotherapy and more.
✅ For personalized treatment of your skin condition please call or email us to schedule an appointment or complimentary 15-minute phone consultation with Dr. Maloof, ND.
Having a healthy cardiovascular system is important for all us and prevention is often the key to long term heart health. According to the CDC, heart disease is the number 1 killer of Americans with nearly 655,000 deaths from heart disease each year.
Luckily heart disease is often preventable! The Principles of Naturopathic Medicine are the map that provide natural, non-invasive options for supporting a healthy body and mind. So, what can you do to help lower the risk factors associated with poor cardiovascular health?
Dr. Maloof’s Inside tips for a Healthy Heart
· Eating Fats: Cholesterol levels are often a risk factor for heart disease when the levels are out of balance. Naturally occurring fats in whole foods are often beneficial for the body as a whole, including the cardiovascular system. Eating foods high in good fats such as free-range organic eggs, nuts, seeds, avocados, olives & olive oil, and seafood are great options to support healthy cholesterol levels. Be sure to avoid trans-fats
· Avoid Processed Foods: Processed foods are often chemically modified and high in sodium. Eat whole foods and variety of fruits and vegetables and to be light with the amount of salt you add.
· Exercise: Having exercise be a part of your daily or weekly routine positively impacts cardiovascular health and can improve heart health. The American Heart Association recommends getting a total 150 minutes of exercise per week (ideally this is spread throughout the week).
· Herbal Supplements: Herbal supplements can be a drug-free way to support your heart. We recommend that you talk to Dr. Maloof at your next appointment to find out if cardiovascular herbs may be right for you.

Sleep, especially quality sleep can be as elusive as seeing Bigfoot in the Maine woods. Now more than ever we all need quality sleep to help support us through day-to-day challenges life throws at us. Getting enough sleep should be a priority for everyone. The average person needs 7-9 hours of sleep per night and many people are not getting enough.
Dr. Maloof’s Inside Tips & Tricks for Sleep:
· Bedtime Routine: Having a bedtime routine helps prepare your mind and body for sleep. Some bedtime routines can include: a warm bath with lavender oil, reading a soothing book, drinking a calming cup of tea, gentle stretching, low light in your home for 2 hours before bedtime or 5-10 minutes of meditation.
· Same Wake-up Time: When you have the same wake-up time every day it supports your body in regulating your sleep-wake cycle.
· Limit Screen-time: Stopping screen time (TV, computer, phone etc.) 2 hours before bed has been shown to help with the body's normal production of melatonin, the sleep hormone (see below for more about this).
· Magnesium (Mg): This mineral plays an important role in hundreds of biochemical pathways in the body. Magnesium supplementation before bedtime can help support restful sleep.
· Melatonin: Melatonin is the fall asleep hormone. Supplementation can be beneficial for many people suffering from sleep disorders. This hormone tells your brain it's time to fall asleep. Taking melatonin before bedtime can support restful sleep
Stress has had a major impact on everyone this past year. Life already offers many challenges and the pandemic has not only magnified those regular life difficulties, but it has brought about so many new challenges.

The 6 Principles of Naturopathic Medicine are the guiding philosophy of Naturopathic Doctors (NDs). It is what separates and defines a Naturopathic Doctor from other types of doctors.
1. Do No Harm
2. The Healing Power of Nature
3. Identify & Treat the Cause
4. Doctor as Teacher
5. Treat the Whole Person
6. Prevention.
NDs are planted firmly in the belief that care is for the individual not a protocol. This philosophy is applied to every patient at every visit.
Hi! I’m Dr. Alison R. Maloof, ND and I’m happy you’re here. I want to introduce myself and share a little about who I am as a person and a doctor.
I come from a loving, supportive and playful family. I have one older brother and many cousins who feel like siblings. I’m engaged to my business partner, Wil Andrews.
I have always had an interest in the healing arts which initially took form as writing, painting, theater and more. It took becoming a certified yoga teacher to see my path as a doctor and a healer. My uncle recommended I look into naturopathic medicine and the more I read the more I knew it was not only something I’d grow to love but it was my calling. There is no other career I could imagine for myself and no greater satisfaction for me than helping others.
My favorite quote and motto as a doctor:
“One of the essential qualities of the clinician is interest in humanity, for the secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient.” Dr. Frances Peabody, 1926
I am honored and grateful to serve the midcoast community. I look forward to meeting each of you and please reach out with questions!
