Morgan Wootten's Induction Into Montgomery Blair High School Alumni Association Hall of Fame 01/26/2020

Much of the Washington area, indeed many across the US, were saddened recently to hear of the passing of one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time...Morgan Wootten. TV stations and newspapers had plenty of stories by and about Morgan, but my favorite of all time was in his acceptance speech during his induction into the Montgomery Blair HS Alumni Hall of Fame. I provided 4-camera video coverage of the event and have isolated this part of the ceremony. BTW, he was introduced by one of his former students, James Brown of NFL Today on CBS.

Double the Pleasure 02/27/2019

"I want to thank you for all your hard work on this, and for your prior work on Sarah's Bat Mitzvah. The arrangements for these events all have their value, but nothing is as special as being able to go back in time with this video and relive the moment, see the children as they were then (and relatives who may not be with us when this video is viewed years from now), etc. I know we paid you, but what you've done is really priceless!" — Father of three daughters whose Bat Mitzvah services and celebrations I documented.
It's nice to hear this from someone else, after I've been telling people for so many years about the importance of video.

(I thought I posted this before, but don't see it here!)

Here is one of their videos...

Best Friends - Shana & Oliver's Highlights 09/28/2017

Nine years ago, Shana Newman Fajardo and Oliver Fajardo were wed at the Comus Inn in Dickerson, MD. I was privileged to be the videographer who documented that rainy day and evening.

Today, on their ninth anniversary, I uploaded their Highlights clip to Vimeo and put the link (https://vimeo.com/235825028) on Oliver's post. Shortly thereafter, I got the following from Shana:

"Oh Allan! Thank you for sharing this! Can you believe it's been 9 years? Feels like yesterday sometimes...

And I couldn't be happier to have had you capturing it all! Tonight I was giving all three kiddos a bath and as soon as they heard me play the video, they all hopped out of the tub dripping wet to watch. The real highlight for me was watching their faces at different moments of the video - and my oldest putting his arm around my shoulder, saying "it's okay mom, don't cry. I love this."

Thanks again Allan - I'm so glad we have remained connected through the years and again so glad to have had you capturing our wedding!!"

Reactions like this reaffirm my conviction of the power of video for capturing life's biggest moments.

Wedding Recessional Under Crossed Lacrosse Sticks 07/08/2016

Back to back weekends with special weddings! This time, it was a high school girls' lacrosse coach who went forward with something special that I suggested in one of our very first conversations. Samantha had close to 40 of her present and former players form a tunnel of crossed lacrosse sticks for the recessional. What she didn't know was that I recruited a player to give her a tushie tap with her stick as Samantha exited the tunnel. Watch the lady on the right in the apricot dress reach out to apply the tap. Keep watching as she adlibbed a second tap of a bridesmaid who had just graduated!

Wow! Has it been so long since I last posted? I guess I was waiting for something as great as this Best Man's Toast. Drew wrote and performed the rap to the surprise of everyone (except his parents). I'd say this was the best toast I've recorded in 30 years since I started shooting Super-8 movies of weddings. What do you think?

Timeline photos 08/19/2014

Haven't posted in a while, but wanted to show a picture that one of my recent brides sent me. They had fallen in love in Paris and placed a lock on the famous lock bridge over the Seine. A year ago, Jacob proposed to Debbie at that very spot. Following their wedding in late June at the Rose Hill Manor in Leesburg, they went back to Paris on their honeymoon (see a pattern here?). They found their lock with the intent to bring it back with them, since some cities have been cutting them off before the extra weight damages the bridges. Imagine my surprise at their choice of a key ring for this special moment!

BTW, this was the second wedding I did with my raw footage package...no Highlights to post.

Effervescent Evan Rocks the Red!

Three years ago, I had the great pleasure of recording Evan Rosenstock at one of his happiest times, his Bar Mitzvah celebration. As typical for him, he always had a big grin, a laugh and a twinkle in his eye as he enjoyed life. With extreme sadness, I post this in his memory.

Talk about bad breaks. This past holiday weekend wins...
1. FIRST BAD BREAK: My Comer light's plastic shoe adapter broke just as they were announcing that the Bat Mitzvah girl's parents were going to give a toast. I tried gaffer's tape but it wouldn't hold, started recording without extra light, and then handheld the Comer while hoping I was getting a usable exposure, since my other hand was on the camera. (As an aside, I'd bought the Comer 2 years ago from Taky and a Sunday phone call worked everything out for a very quick replacement. Great service!!!).
2. SECOND BAD BREAK: Pulled out a cheap Chinese LED that I keep for backup. About an hour later, it fell off the camera and the battery hit the floor, opening the case and breaking an internal lead. When I get the time, I may be able to salvage it.
3. THIRD, AND WORST, BREAK: Walking downstairs to my basement studio on Monday, I hit just the edge of the second step from the bottom, and went hard to the floor. My right ankle rotated about 90 degrees clockwise bringing instant pain. An x-ray the next day confirmed hairline fractures on both sides of the ankle. I'm limping around in a boot and will see the orthopedic surgeon tomorrow. I'm sure surgery won't be needed, but being on my foot and moving a lot for 6 hours could be a no-no, not to mention a limit on my speed/mobility. Fortunately, I have no contracts for myself in the next 8 weeks, but might have to bail on one or two second camera jobs. The first is this weekend, but the second isn't for two weeks, so I hope I can still do that.

2012 Brambleton Ribbon Run

Back in April I videotaped activity related to the Step Sisters' Brambleton Ribbon Run. This group consists of over 30 women (including my daughter) dedicated to raising funds to battle breast cancer. They are consistently among the top producers in the Washington, DC Avon Walk. While I haven't gotten to the high-energy video to be used on their web site, I did take a few hours out to create this short video to support Brambleton, VA's submission for recognition as a "Runner Friendly Community." I love the little girl's comment at the end!

Unexpected Help With the Garter Removal

Right after this garter ceremony last night, I told Sarah and Earle that I couldn't wait to post the clip for all of my friends to enjoy. There are a lot of funny, but scripted, garter removal clips on the web, but this is now my favorite!

http://vimeo.com/41661717

Two people with greatly different backgrounds fell in love and committed to one another in a May 5, 2012 wedding. At the reception, Earle went looking for Sarah's garter, only to be surprised with unexpected help!

This is the time when everyone is remembering the big events of the past year. I went one further, as my high school class had its 50th Reunion. Somehow, I ended up creating a video that was shown at the big dinner dance. I drew on a Yearbook in Sound, some football footage and graduation footage (movies) and lots of pictures from our yearbook and the school newspaper. So, as 2011 ends, here's what it looked like to be a senior in high school in 1961:

Just posted a Highlights clip for one of those great weddings that makes this such a wonderful job. Sara & Chris grew up in the Albuquerque area and after graduating from Univ of New Mexico, they headed east for jobs. Sara's family is from Peru, so the party featured the liveliest dancing and the most packed dance floor ever. Featured was a La Hora Loco, sort of a Mardi Gras celebration with masks and beads and and a solid half hour of non-stop music (and I didn't stop recording for the whole time)!

Royal Weddings – Present & Past || The Impact of Video & History Preservation | The Special Day

There are quite a few comments in the Member's Forum of VideoUniversity.com about the number and locations of cameras at the Royal Wedding. I don't get so elaborate, but there is still one thing in common between my work and what you saw on TV; both capture a pinnacle moment as a treasure for the future. Carolyn Chen, an event planner, makes this very clear. She has clips from 4 Royal Weddings.

Though I was only about 4 years old when Lady Diana and Prince Charles were married, I still remember watching thei

A few weeks ago, MomentVille.com also named me to their 2011 Hot List (http://vendors.momentville.com/hot_list/QWhk5jZy4O16Ra).

While these awards are nice for marketing, I get more pleasure out of hearing a bride say how much she loves her video, so thanks again for all the kind words.

vendors.momentville.com 13 Jan, 2011 - MomentVille.com, one of the worlds leading wedding websites, has just announced that That Video Guy/Allan Goldberg has been selected for the 2011 Wedding Professional Hot List.

This award recognizes the top 5 percent of local wedding professionals from the WeddingWire Network who demonstrate quality and service excellence in the wedding industry."

Don't Make Me Cry

Here's a great couple who impressed me from the beginning with their desire for a wedding video. They saw some of my work and decided that despite a tight budget (I hear that phrase a lot from inquiring brides to be) they really wanted me to cover their wedding day. We were able to work out a deal satisfactory to both of us, and now, after a bit of a wait, here's Christy and Ben's Highlights.

08/16/2010

One last thing...they had an Angolan buffet, so I got to try a number of different foods (but stayed away from the fish heads). All-in-all, another great reason why event videography is so interesting.

08/16/2010

More on the Angolan wedding: The entire ceremony was done around a table with the bride & groom
facing the officiant. On each side of the table sat two witnesses. Since
everything was in Portuguese, I didn't understand a word that was said,
but it sounded as if there were "I do's." There were no other vows
and the officiant said nothing as the rings were exchanged, but it ended with the universal kiss.

08/16/2010

I did something a bit different last night...an Angolan wedding. Angola is in southern Africa, but was a Portuguese colony from the 15th century. The Samba originated there, and I got to see about 3 hours of that dance! The wedding got off to a slow start. Neither the bride nor groom arrived at the site until one hour and fifteen minutes after the ceremony was supposed to start.
