From Donna Edwards of AFL-CIO,
With President Biden’s official signature on the bipartisan bill, Infrastructure Week is finally here.
The passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is a monumental political and legislative accomplishment. This is a $1.2 trillion investment in our infrastructure after decades of decline, and America’s workers are ready to rebuild our country.
This is a tremendous victory for working people in America:
• $110 billion to rebuild 173,000 miles of roads and 45,000 bridges.
• $65 billion to expand broadband internet access, particularly in rural areas.
• $55 billion to make sure Americans have access to safe and clean water, including $15 billion to replace lead pipes.
There’s even more in the bill, and all of this investment will create good union jobs. And that is worth celebrating.
Working people didn’t vote for a return to normal; we voted for a better future. And we’re making progress.
We need to finish the job by also passing the Build Back Better Act. Will you add your name and call on Congress to pass it immediately?
In Solidarity,
Team AFL-CIO

A message from President Donna S. Edwards................
Today we observe Veterans Day, honoring the men and women who served in our nation’s armed forces. Veterans are more likely to work in a unionized workplace. Compared to a 12 percent coverage rate overall, 16 percent of veterans—or 1.2 million veterans (2017)—are in a union or covered by a union contract.
Unfortunately, a large number of veterans not in unionized worksites are working in low-wage jobs. In fact, 1 out of every 5 veterans would benefit from raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2024. In addition to raising the minimum wage, Congress should ensure that workers who have fought to preserve our freedoms return to workplaces where they have the freedom to join together to bargain for better wages and working conditions. Nearly 1 in 5 employed veterans, including 1 in 3 with a service-connected disability, work in the public sector. nOe third of federal civil servants are veterans,
The Union Veterans Council of the AFL-CIO is a vital part of building labor's support and programs for veterans. Contact https://unionveterans.org/ to discover how your union can support our veterans.
Engage. Educate. Mobilize. Veterans and working people are facing the same issues—a lack of good jobs, access to quality health care, and the need for racial and economic justice.
Veterans Day - On behalf of AFSCME Local 2380, thank you for all that you have done and all that you continue to do.
Please take time to thank our service members. Remember those service members who have fallen and help those in need.
AFSCME’s Saunders: We will continue the fight ‘so that every American’s voice is heard in our democracy’
WASHINGTON — AFSCME President Lee Saunders released the following statement after the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act failed to advance in the U.S. Senate:
“The late John Lewis marched 50 miles from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, not once but twice, for the right to vote – nearly losing his life along the way. But a minority of senators won’t even vote to consider the bill that carries his name and honors his legacy, a bill that would restore the Voting Rights Act protections so many sacrificed so much for. We will continue the fight – getting in ‘good and necessary trouble’ – so that every American’s voice is heard in our democracy, no matter their race, background, economic status or zip code.”
Thank a union.
Union Strong!
Labor unions’ approval is highest in 17 years because unions stand with working families A new Gallup poll reveals continued public support for labor unions, with nearly two out of three Americans (65%) expressing approval.

On Saturday, February 24th at rallies across the country, thousands of working people will stand united for the Working People’s Day of Action. This date has been chosen because, two days later, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in the Janus v. AFSCME court case. This case is arguably the most important labor case of the 21st century to date. The outcome could result in significant obstacles for organized labor.
Unions across the country, as well as your AFSCME Local 2380 Staff Union, need your support and are counting on all of us to show our Solidarity by attending a rally.
Join us for the Working People’s Day of Action! In the Washington, DC area, the rally will be held from 10am to 12noon on Saturday, February 24th at:
Freedom Plaza
14th Street and Pennsylvania Ave., NW
Washington, DC 20004
If we have enough persons attending, AFSCME Council 67 will provide transportation. If you are interested in going, please contact me and I will get back to you with details.
I hope we can count on your support. As AFSCME International states: “On the Working People’s Day of Action, we will stand up for the freedom of working people to join together in strong unions and fight for decent and equitable pay for our work, affordable health care, quality schools, vibrant communities and a secure future for all of us.”
In Solidarity,
Chris Standing
Tonight, I will be speaking before the Board of Trustees. The meeting will begin at 8:00 PM in the CT building, located at 9200 Corporate Blvd, Rockville. As you are already aware, we are facing one of our biggest challenges yet, Comp-101. I will be speaking to Comp 101 tonight.
What can you do? Please show up to show our solidarity. We need your support. We need your presence to show Management that we are not going to capitulate to every demand that is put upon us. Comp 101 unfairly targets the earning potential of our brothers and sisters in order to support the growing professional services and administration at the College.
In Solidarity,
Chris Standing
