At CCL, kids get the freedom to move their bodies as much as they need to. We focus on sensory regulation before all else.
🌟 Our clients love coming here so they’re usually engaged no matter what! Sitting at a table doesn’t equal progress. Many kids actually make more progress when they’re not required to keep their body still.

Pretend play is one of the most important cognitive skills that are a part of speech language development. Many children with speech language delays, autism and cognitive delays have difficulty engaging in this form of play. Working on developing & supporting pretend play simultaneously improves development of speech language skills.
Pretend Play:
✨ Develops phrases & sentences:
In Pretend Play, children use multiple objects together and do a series of actions. This helps them to combine their known words (Nouns + Verbs) to form different sentence combination. (e.g. Doggy fell down. Teddy drink milk. Doll is crying.)
✨ Develops imagination:
A very important cognitive skill that allows children to form mental imagery of their thoughts. Play is a window to a child’s mind, specially when they are minimally verbal. It allows us to see what the child knows & understands. This ability is extremely helpful to build skills like recall and retaining information in the form of words, sentences or interactions.
✨ Develops social interaction:
Role play develops higher order language & cognitive skills like perspective taking, dialogue, turn taking in interactions, understanding & responding to spontaneous questions. These lay the basis for strong social interaction skills in children.

Speech therapy supports children’s reading and literacy by improving phonological awareness, sound recognition, and language comprehension. Early intervention helps build strong decoding and reading skills, setting children up for lifelong learning.

Have you heard/ thought the following?
🗣️ I’m concerned that my child isn’t talking, but my pediatrician says I have to wait until they are 2 before they’ll refer to a speech therapist.
🗣️ My child seems behind her peers, but my family is telling me that I’m jumping the gun and that she is too young to seek help.
🗣️ We’ve tried everything and he’s just not getting it.
🗣️ I know I should have addressed this issue earlier, but I didn’t and now I’m worried that it’s too late.
Do 👏 Not 👏 Listen 👏 To 👏 This 👏
It’s simply not true. Trust your gut.
A licensed & certified speech language pathologist can and will:
👉 listen to your concerns
👉 thoroughly evaluate your child and explain the results of the assessments
👉 give you specific recommendations (which may or may not include therapy)
👉 discuss prognosis and what you can expect
✨ It’s not too early. And it’s NEVER too late.✨

An oldie but a goodie, you probably have “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” sitting on your child’s bookshelf. This book is great for supporting speech and language development.
🐻 PRACTICING REPETITIVE LANGUAGE!
Predictable books teach pre-reading skills, encourages participation in reading, and allows the child to feel successful with reading.
🐻 IDENTIFY AND NAME COLORS!
This book provides LOTS of opportunities for naming, identifying, and practicing colors! Feel free to go off script.
🐻 INCREASE VOCABULARY RELATED TO ANIMALS!
Spoiler alert: This book isn’t just about a bear! It includes many animals you and your child can read about and even continue talking about when the book is done!
🐻 PRACTICE SPEECH SOUNDS!
Is your child working on making certain sounds? Books are a great place to find words with their speech sound to practice.

Play is self-directed, intrinsically motivated, and JOYFUL. 🧸 🧩 ⚽️ We know children learn best through play. It takes 400 repetitions of an act or a learning skill, to get one new synapse OR 12 repetitions with joy and laughter because there’s a release of a chemical dopamine. That is why we’re so passionate about child-led play therapy.

Sitting still *quietly* while listening to a book can be more tedious than fun for some children. If your child struggles to pay attention while you’re reading together, here are some tips that might help.
📚 Pick interactive books.
Whether it’s searching for something on each page (like with an I Spy book) or touching parts of the picture (like with “Press Here”), books that actively draws a reader in can help keep them engaged during storytime.
📚 Let them do something with their hands.
Give them crayons, play dough, or a puzzle while you read aloud to them. If they can keep their hands busy and their attention focused on a task, they may be more willing to listen to the story.
📚 Try different times of day.
Some times of day work better for certain children. The afternoon, when they are wound up and ready to play, may not be the best. Try bedtime when they’re anxious to stay up a little longer or at mealtime while they eat.
📚 Give them an overview of the story first.
Some children struggle with books because they have a hard time following the plot. Before you start reading, explain to them what they can expect from the story and few things they may want to look for,
📚 Don’t push too hard.
Some children just need to mature a little before they are ready to embrace reading.
Give them some space, try again frequently, and model a love of reading for them.

Yippee for Exclamatory Words! Exclamatory words are words that many people do not consider true words. They’re fun, easy to imitate, and have a wide variety of vowels and early developing consonant sounds. 😍 Exclamatory sounds and words are extremely helpful in getting little ones talking and imitating.
🌟 The possibilities are endless! What words would you add to this list??
