Jenkins Urban Garden
Vegetable farming with curbs and sidewalks. A dedicated amateur’s take at a lost art.
Tomatoes, onions, peppers, carrots, cucumbers, green beans, potatoes, water melon…
Zone 6B / Area code 479
Raised beds and a Yoderbilt greenhouse
A nice round of peppers and an unwelcome guest in the garden tonight. Nine more jars of salsa!
The peppers 🌶️ 🫑 are going great, but we have a definite slowdown for our 🍅 plants. Still a nice haul!
Still some tomatoes producing!
We love to grow potatoes in buckets (70+) and have been perfecting the science for a few years now. As good as we might *think* we are, look at the luck we had with a non-bucket seed potato that popped up in the regular raised gardens!
Storing a few hundred onions to use throughout the year. These old plant containers work great!
What does a few weeks’ worth of tomatoes look like when you have 60 +\- plants?
Lots of tomatoes have been harvested (along with a case of fine Pilsner beer) in the past few weeks, along with about 200 onions. While there are still plenty of fruit ripening, it is clear we’ve reached the apex of the summer. 🧅
Another haul of tomatoes tonight!
Look at all these tomatoes from the garden! Oaxacan, Mr. Stripey, Mountain Pride, Purple Calabash, Costoluto Genovese, German Johnson. All of these are combined with our pepper varieties to make salsa. This batch was 18 quarts of salsa when completed!
Plenty of fruit on the vine ready to be picked. We even had a beauty contest for the most attractive tomato.
Plenty of 🍅 plants producing and fruit ripening. Harvest time today!
What do 21 containers of potatoes look like at harvest time? Enough for this years’ Thanksgiving and Christmas meals (about 4 ~ 5 decent potatoes per container)! Pontiac Red, German Butterball, Red Norland, Rose Gold, Purple Majestic Kennebec White, et al in the mix.
🥔 🪣 (25 more to go)
A Jenkins Garden harvest (with our newly hired summer intern) today resulted in 13 pint jars and minimal amount of waste from the tomatoes and peppers for the compost (for next year’s soil). Special thanks to Bridget Dye for managing the garden for the last few days and Amanda’s salsa creation skills!
A few more harvested!
Much of the focus of our garden is on making salsa. Today, we made our second batch of the year! 🍅 🧅 🌶️ 🫑
A little midweek haul of tomatoes, peppers and carrots!
A little Father’s Day harvest!
From seven buckets of seed 🥔 we harvested 58 that are appropriate size to be eaten. We shall try a few tonight!
Some peppers 🌶️ 🫑 showing their true colors.
A few more 🍅 from the vine.
Tomato number one in the books!
Plants growing well with this rain and wonderful weather. 200+ 🧅, 11 🌶️, 63 🍅, 72 🥔
Plenty of baby tomatoes on 63 total 🍅 plants.
Beautiful flowers on some 🥔 plants
Plenty of things growing in the garden!
A little extra watering and some wrapping paper for the frost advisory tonight.
21 plants in the ground (45 to go). Waiting on a cold Monday morning to pass.
73 buckets of potatoes growing wonderfully (in the eclipse).
🥔 time!
Potato time! Thirty 🪣 done with thirty more to go!
