ISD 279 - Osseo Area Schools passed Policy 508. This is progress and amazing support for all of our LGBTQIA+ students and staff!

“Last night the Osseo School Board voted 4-2 to approve Policy 508, a new Gender Inclusion Policy in support of transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming students in our schools. Thank you to everyone that came to speak at the meeting or that sent messages ahead of time on all sides of this issue. I am sorry for anyone that felt heckled, mocked, or laughed at, as I know firsthand there a few more vulnerable positions than speaking your truth in front of a packed room.

District staff are already meeting to work through implementing this policy and we are all working through how to continue and improve community engagement for us all to grow in meeting the needs of all district scholars for Policy 508 and future policies.

Some of the key takeaways from Policy 508 are listed below -

- Identify and address students by their preferred names and pronouns that align with their
gender identity.
- Upon written request of the student and their parent(s) or guardian(s), student names and
pronouns will be changed on school district digital systems to the extent possible to align with
their gender identity. Medical documentation or legal verification of a student’s name change is
not required.
- Within academic programming, prohibit the separation of students and/or curricular materials
based upon gender unless it serves as a legitimate pedagogical tool.
- Provide all students the opportunity to participate in co-curricular and extracurricular activities in
a manner consistent with their gender identity, including but not limited to intramural and
interscholastic athletics, and in conformance with Minnesota State High School League rules and
regulations, where applicable.
- Provide all students with access to facilities that align with students’ gender identity”
