Hi there,
Holidays can be a joyous time but they can also be stressful. The family gatherings, holiday festivities and merriment can easily turn into too much of a good thing, especially for individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Which then can also add additional stress to you as the caregiver. It is important to keep in mind your limits and the limits of the person you’re caring for. I want to share some tips on how to hopefully avoid too much of a good thing this holiday season and also share some suggestions on how to prepare family for visits.
Avoiding Too Much of a Good Thing
• Too much activity. For those living with Alzheimer’s, you want to be mindful of too much activity. This may cause agitation and other dementia related behaviors. Tune into the amount of activity and adapt as necessary. Also consider the person’s routine and ways to help maintain that routine amidst all of the holiday fun.
• Too much noise. If you’re hosting a holiday party, be mindful of the noise level. A lot of noise can be overwhelming to someone who is living with dementia. Maybe you don’t need holiday music and the TV on while everyone is chatting. It may also be helpful to move your loved one to a quieter room to allow them to decompress. You could also encourage family to visit them individually so he or she can get the most from conversations.
• Too many visitors. I love that the holidays bring people together but a person living with dementia could become easily overwhelmed by too many visitors. Instead of large family get togethers, it may be better to have smaller groups of people visit throughout the day or plan time for the individual to rest in a quiet spot if they start to get overwhelmed. You may also need to communicate to the family that the older loved one may only stay for the meal or for a short period of time and then head home.
Preparing Family for a Visit
It may also be helpful to send a note to family before the holiday gathering to provide an update on your loved one, especially if they have significantly changed or declined over the past year. In your note, you could include:
• A recent photo so people are aware of any physical changes.
• Tips for making the most of the visit. For example, you could remind them that your loved one may not have all of the facts right in their stories but please do not correct them as it may make them upset. You could provide topics that they really enjoy talking about.
• Expectations that your loved one may need to leave early or rest during the gathering.
• Resources where family members can learn more about the type of dementia that your loved one has. Some of these resources could include:
I hope these tips are helpful in setting yourself, your loved one and your family up for success this holiday season. For more tips, check out the two-part series of Caregiver Chats podcast called “Home For The Holidays.”
If you have any tips on how you have made the holidays less stressful for you and your family, please email me at [email protected].
