“So… why exactly are you digging in the dirt?”
As an environmental scientist, “digging in the dirt” is all part of a day’s work. (Although the more professional terminology for it is soil sampling.)
Soil is so much more complex than people realize. It’s teeming with life! Not only does soil create its own ecosystem, it is quite literally the backbone of our society. Ecological systems, environmental systems, and even human developments would not exist if it weren’t for the soil beneath our feet.
Soil sampling is one of the most direct ways that soil’s health can be determined. The sampling process is almost as complex as the soil itself! Even though each sampling job is different, the end goal of each task is to have contamination-free soils. If you are interested in learning more about how sampling is done and why it is an integral part of the environmental consulting industry, please follow the link below to the full blog post on the J.R. Design of Concrete Foundations (Or A Building Is Only As Strong As Its Foundation)
Are you thinking about starting a new construction project? Are you looking to construct a new building, or add an extension to your home’s floorplan? If so then you are going to need a foundation designed for your project.

Many people don’t tend to think about the foundation of a structure, because as you can guess the foundation isn’t usually visible, “out of sight out of mind”. However, despite the fact that foundations are the least thought about, it is actually the most important part of your structure.

To find out why please follow the link below to the full blog post on the J.R. Holzmacher P.E., LLC website to read further.

One of the perks for some of our JRH staff is being able to enjoy the NYC sky line while they are performing their Monthly OER (Office of Environmental Remediation) inspections. While in the Bronx, Mia, Brandon and Nancy finally got to put away their winter coats, but still making sure they are wearing their masks.

Why am I being charged another fee?
If you live in Suffolk County have you noticed the relatively new $20 “Water Quality Treatment Charge” on your water bill and wondered what it was for? I’m here to help you understand where that money is going and why it is needed by your water supplier. On August 26, 2020, New York State adopted new drinking water standards for “Emerging Contaminants” that include three main contaminates called 1,4 Dioxane, Perfluorooctanoic Sulfonate (PFOS) and Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA). The new drinking water require new treatments for drinking water. Please follow the link below to the full blog post on the J.R. Holzmacher P.E., LLC website to read further.

Why does it actually take that long to obtain a pool construction permit?

Have you been thinking about constructing or renovating your commercial pool for the summer start? You are definitely not alone, the beginning of spring going into summer is an incredibly popular time for swimming pool construction. Summer may still be a few months away, but there are a few requirements for commercial pools which can take weeks if not months to fulfill. This is why it is vital you are aware of the timeframe before beginning the permitting and construction process. Commercial projects which start the permitting process in February 2021 can expect to have a finished and operational pool for the summer start of 2022. If you are interested in learning more information about the permitting and construction process for commercial pools, and why it can take this long, please follow the link below to the full blog post on the J.R. IA OWTS What are they and do I need one?

IA-OWTS stands for Innovative Alternative On-site Wastewater Treatment System

I recently had a conversation with a friend who was looking to replace his home’s sanitary system and I found myself answering a bunch of questions that I deal with on a daily basis as an engineer. I later realized that other people may be asking themselves these very same questions without knowing where to go for answers. I am writing this post to provide information to the average homeowner that may need a new sanitary system for their home but still has questions. If you are interested in learning more about the Innovative Alternative On-site Wastewater Treatment System (IA-OWTS) or how we can help you with your project, please follow the link below to the full blog post on the J.R. “What are you doing?!”
“Are you from the town?”
“Are you supposed to be here?
These are questions I hear often when I am at a jobsite performing a scheduled Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) inspection. It occurred to me that not many people have heard of, or even realize what “erosion control” is or how it is managed. A person may see a silt fence as just a regular black fence that acts as a construction fence, but those little black fences are a part of a much bigger picture called Stormwater pollution prevention. All projects including redevelopment projects disturbing one acre or greater of soil require a SWPPP, but knowing which category of SWPPP your project falls into is something we do. This can save the client money and time. If you are interested in learning more about Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans or how we can help you with your project, please follow the link below to the full blog post on the J.R. What is Environmental Science and how does it relate to modern development? Environmental Science is an exploration of the human environment and the multitude of factors that influence it. It is extremely relevant in today's world due to the continuous growth of the human environment. As the human environment expands, so does the potential for development on non-environmentally sound lands. Environmental Science aims to tackle this issue through a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (Phase I ESA). If you're interested in learning more about Environmental Science and Phase I ESAs, please follow the link below to the full blog post on the J.R. Holzmacher P.E., LLC website.

Today at JRH the office came together to participate in the Thanksgiving Holiday food donation. We are happy to be able to present 5 families with baskets filled with holiday foods and love. We have an amazing staff here at JRH and it was great the way the employees came together and made sure there was more than what was requested for these baskets. It is this time of year that we are reminded of all that we are thankful for in our lives and it is also this time of year we are reminded that there are others less fortunate. We would like to encourage all our friends, family and others, if it is possible share your happiness and make a donation to your local food pantry. It is always greatly appreciated.

We here at JRH would like to take time today and thank all the Veterans, past and present for their service and sacrifice for our country. And in the words of Elmer Davis: “This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.”

From carving jack-o’-lanterns to trick-or-treating, Halloween can be a fun night for kids of any age. As seen by todays JRH people who got in the spirit of the holiday. Here we have our own Morgan Keating who is ready to rob a bank, and Mia Tagliagambe celebrating a simpler time as a hippie. Sarah Caliendo showed us her favorite color crayon in the Crayola box and Nicole Sinko is showing what it is to be a 7th grader from the Netflix show “Big Mouth”.
Also all of us here would like to remind everyone that Halloween night can be a dangerous night for pedestrians. To help ensure your evening is full of planned scares and frights, here are some road safety tips for you and your kids to consider.
- Make sure your child takes along a working flashlight or an abundant number of glow sticks to help ensure they’re visible to others.
- Don’t let your kids leave home without a fully charged cellphone so they can call for help in the event of an emergency. You may also want to remind your children to keep their heads up and put their phones and other devices down, especially when crossing the street. Be sure that any costume your child wears on Halloween night doesn’t impede their vision or pose a tripping hazard.
- Don’t send your kids under the age of 12 out trick-or-treating by themselves. If they resist because they don’t want to be seen with mom or dad, wear a costume. It’s Halloween. You can get away with it.
- Set a curfew for your older children, and decide on a predetermined route so you’ll know their approximate whereabouts.

On April 15, 2019 JRH turned 20 years old. This is a company that started by 2 friends, Bob Holzmacher and Tony Zalak, who though together they could produce work that they could be proud of. It is our clients continued trust and confidence that has made this company what we are today. On July 12, 2019 JRH invited the staff, clients and friends to join us in our celebration at the Mediterranean Manor in Patchogue. It was an amazing night. Everything was perfect, the weather cooperated, the place was amazing with a staff that made us feel special. The music provided by the local performer Dan Donnelly was incredible. We want to thank everyone who joined us in our celebration and look forward to the next milestone party in 5 years.

We hope this special day reminds us of how important it is to keep it healthy and safe for future generations. And as an American Indian proverb tells us “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.”

As most of you know recently Detective Brian “Smiles” Simonsen was killed in the line of duty. This was a tragedy that has left us all sad. JRH’s lead Environmental Scientist, AJ Scheff was Brian’s cousin and attended the funeral with the family. He was overwhelming by the support and it really touch his heart. Brian was a big animal lover and his widow is requesting that if you can please support the non-profit Healing Haven Animal Foundation, a local foundation that helps pet owners improve the health and welfare of animals through funding urgent veterinary care, providing animal care education, and doing community outreach programs such as the Cold Cats Project. To all our friend and family, Please, lets keep Brian’s Memory alive and donate to this worthy cause.

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938.
JRH would like to thank all the brave men and women past and present who gave and give all of themselves so we may enjoy the freedom we are afforded by living in America.

We here are JRH would like to take a minute and remind all our family, friends and acquaintances to get out and Vote. Tomorrow, November 6, 2018 is the one day of the year where we can get our voices heard. But we would like to encourage everyone to please take some time and educate yourself on the candidates. Please remember actors and actresses are not the characters they play on TV or the movies. Please do not blindly follow someone just because you thought they were cool in a show. This election year will be a very telling election. It will be telling our representatives what the majority of the people feel and what they want. So, lets get out there and vote. Pass the word around.

This past weekend several of JRH’s employees and family members participated in “The Euclid Hose Company of Patchogue Running of the Dead” Morgan Keating who invited JRH to sponsor and participated did an amazing job (and looked fabulous as a sleepy Zombie with curlers in her hair!). We, the orange team we named ourselves, all had a great time and had some amazing results.
JRH would like to congratulate Sarah Caliendo for coming in 2nd place in her age category and also a shout out to Pat Zalak for coming in 4th in her age category. Also let’s not forget Randy Lopez who carried his your partner Kylie across the finish line. Corinne Healy really showed off her talent not just in her ability to run but in her great makeup skills as she was the only “Tourist Zombie” in the race.

It is also our privilege to have Alex Eletto (Son of Tina and Vinnie Eletto) representing JRH in the race. Alex came in 1st place (YES WE SAID 1st PLACE!!!!) with a time of 17 minutes even. He is truly amazing
Here’s to looking forward to next years Race!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!
All of us here at JRH would like to wish everyone a fun filled, safe Halloween. As you can see several of us here really get in the spirit of the holiday. Morgan, a mechanical engineer, has transformed herself into a Bioluminescent Jellyfish, whereas Sarah, another engineer, has kept herself on land and became a scarecrow.

Of course, we cannot forget our own JRH mascot “Palmer the 6-month-old Goldendoodle”. He has transformed himself (with a little help from his daddy Anthony) in to a TY Beanie Baby.

PS: Why do engineers like Halloween? Because they design the skeleton of your home. Yeah yeah I know it is a little lame but what do you expect from Engineers?

JRH would like to Thank Morgan Keating for inviting us to sponsor and participate in “The Euclid Hose Company of Patchogue Running of the Dead”.

Check out some of the JRH participants who had a great time. We are proud to announce that Kevin Orlando was awarded the “Most Handsome Zombie” award and Jason Pontieri won 3rd place in “His Age Group”. Sarah and Tyler Caliendo made quite the lovely married zombie couple whereas Shaun HOwley kept himself human but it is my understanding he may have lost his brain to a zombie.

I support the American Red Cross

All of us here at JRH would like to extend our prayers and thoughts to the people being effected by Hurricane/Tropical storm Harvey. The horrors associated with this tragedy is a reminder to all of us here on Long Island and the surrounding areas how we were effected in 2012 by Supterstorm Sandy. The stories and photos of the devastation occurring are terrifying but the stories of people helping people are uplifting and hopeful. The storm is not over and the aftermath will leave a devastation that will exist for years.

JRH would like to reach out to all our friends, families and associates and encourage people to help anyway they can. Here are some links for anyone interested in donating. These are just a few to be noted and as always, we would like to remind people to be cautious who they are donating to.

Thank you.
