Lathe Night Wood Designs
Custom woodturning designs by Josh Knutson
So I did a thing.. 😎 Behold! Baseball-sized D&D dice! I blended a deep purple pigment with a carbon metallic pour.
A customer request for a special set of D&D dice - clear, with copper pieces. Here they are. 😎
New Year, new skills to teach myself. Rigged up a glass cutter, made a prototype drinking glass from a wine bottle. 😎
The flame pattern is just fantastic on this pice of maple!
Transparent D&D dice with metal flakes inside. These are incredible in person. I haven’t painted on the numbers yet to show off the metal inside and the complete clarity throughout. Bubble-free.
More D&D dice! Orange and Carbon are standard style. Purple set is steampunk style. Gold and Ruby are actually glitter suspended in clear resin. I can’t get the camera to show it correctly, but the Ruby ones in person are vibrant like Dorothy’s ruby slippers!
More dice. 😎 They are more popular than I realized.
Decided to step the dice up and make Steampunk versions.
A little off the beaten path from my usual crafts, but I decided to cast some D&D dice from scratch. I added some pigments to make it a really nice translucent Carbon Flash color to match my daughter’s Centennial Corvette paint job. I put them in my pressure pot at 60 PSI overnight and they are completely flawless with zero bubbles, chips, or voids. Numbers are hand painted with chrome model paint.
Finishing up on a Black Walnut chip bowl for a custom order.😎

Each one is unique, and rustic candle holders are hot this year. Don’t miss out! I can take custom orders, but those will be fulfilled after October 7th.
I acquired barrel staves that used to hold Jim Beam. Every one of them is being made into rustic candle holders. The whole shop now has a burbon scent to it.

Happy Fall Y’all! Live edge bowls and candle holders make for beautiful Fall decor! We’ll have a few live edge bowls available in two weeks at Bear Claw Vineyards & Winery, Inc. on October 7th for Travis Bowlin’s 2nd Annual Cigar Box Guitar Festival.
Gigantic live edge Red Oak centerpiece bowl. This particular piece came from the tree that came crashing through my house 2 years ago. I’m finally getting around to processing a bunch of it.
Ewok, the shop guard. Protecting that white oak and a Rhea egg while I work.
Now it has a mini twin. Tomorrow, large live edge bowls and candle holders.
Today was spent making various wood blanks out of sections of the Red Oak that crashed through my house 2 years ago. The trunk has been slow drying in the shop all that time. Riley helped me chainsaw the sections today, and turn them into bowl, bottle stopper, salt and pepper grinder blanks.
We’re going to be at the Bear Claw Vineyards & Winery, Inc. on October 7th for Travis Bowlin’s Cigar Box Guitar Music & Arts Festival! Come on up to Blue Ridge for good music, good wine, food trucks, raffles, and lots of local artisans like us! Bring an unwrapped toy to benefit Toys For Tots!
Resin, resin, resin, wood chips… oh, and a bowl and lathe, somewhere.
Here’s the blank that cured in the pressure pot since yesterday. I’ve trimmed it up and ready to turn it on the lathe! Stay tuned for more.
How to make a gigantic crazy bowl blank: 1) Get some dollar store plastic punch bowls as molds. 2) Cut up a bunch of wood scraps from previous projects. 3) Put the wood scraps into the plastic bowl, and tape down another one inside as displacement to not waste so much resin and wood. Tape it down. 4) Mix a ton of casting resin and a pigment color of your choice(1700 ml for this one). Pour it in. 5) Put the project into a pressure pot and compress to 60 PSI. Place it in 65-70F temps(in your house). Let it sit for 24 hours to cure.
Tomorrow we crack it out of the mold, drill on a face plate, and turn it on the lathe. 😎
