Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac: Mortgages in forbearance do not need to be paid back all at once . Borrowers in forbearance will have to repay their missed mortgage payments one way or another, but there appears to be a growing number of borrowers who think they have to repay all their missed payments in one lump sum

I wanted to warn you of companies providing certain “Forbearance Plans” to their customers.

So, what is a Mortgage Forbearance Agreement?

A mortgage forbearance agreement is an agreement made between a Mortgage Lender and a borrower in which the lender agrees not to exercise its legal right to foreclose on a mortgage and the borrower agrees to a mortgage plan that will, over a certain time period, bring the borrower current on his or her payments.

Forbearance is not a forgiveness of the payment as it will be due at some point as you can see by the example below. And when it comes due and you don’t pay it can/will have a huge impact on your credit.

Be very careful when reading or signing any of these documents. Often, these companies will allow you to defer making monthly payments to the them only to bill you later in a lump sum payment at the end of the period.

I am sending this message to warn you to be careful of these practices as often these may hurt you in the long run.
