CRHS DANCE DEPARTMENT COURSES

DANCE DEPARTMENT
Placement begins in Dance I and moves up after each year of completion. No audition or experience is required to start in Dance I. All dance courses will require specific attire. Attendance is required at all rehearsals and performances outside normal school hours. Performances take place both Fall and Spring semester.

Dance I-
This course is an introduction to all basic dance techniques (tap, ballet, jazz, modern, folk and ethnic) including vocabulary and principles of all dance forms.*

Dance II-
This course extends skills and concepts introduced in Dance I. Group and individual projects through choreography and research are introduced.

Dance III–
This course extends skills and concepts introduced in Dance II. The student continues project work and develops performance evaluations skills. This course focuses on developing the artistic growth of the intermediate dancer.

Dance IV-
This course further extends skills and concepts introduced in Dance III. The student continues project work, explores career opportunities and explores in depth the art of dance. This course focuses on developing the artistic growth and technique of the advanced dancer. Students will create, produce, and perform dance works.

Drill Prep-
This course is designed for students who plan to try out for drill team. The course covers basic techniques of dance and stretching. Auditions for the drill team will take place in fall semester. See Royalty info. 1stsemester class only. 2nd semester will be placed in a separate dance class. If accepted to dance team, drill prep class will continue.

Ballet Folklorico I-IV*
For students with a sincere interest in International Dance, especially the dances of the Mexican states. This course includes vocabulary and principles of all dance forms. There is a primary focus on the state dances of Mexico, although other international dances will be included.

ACADEMY OF VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS
At the VPA Academy, the goal is not only to develop a highly skilled dancer, but to ensure that every student leaves the Dance Program with a better understanding and appreciation of dance forms. The dance faculty is dedicated to the development of technique and the offering of performance opportunities. The student will demonstrate learning on different levels, including mastery of specific dance techniques, aesthetic recognition, utilization of the creative process, and historical knowledge and appreciation. All dance courses will require specific attire. Attendance is required at all rehearsals and performances outside normal school hours. Performances take place both Fall and Spring semester. Audition is required for placement into most dance classes. Contact dance department for more information on the process to get placement for these classes.

Ballet I, Tap I, Jazz I-
Beginning levels are an introduction to the vocabulary, general principles and movement of the dance form. Credit for this course does not automatically qualify the student for the next level as students often repeat levels.*
Ballet II, Ballet III, Ballet IV, Tap II/III/IV,
Jazz II, Jazz III, Jazz IV-
These courses extend the learners knowledge of the vocabulary, general principles and movement of the dance form. They focus on developing and assessing the artistic growth of the advanced dancer, as well as exploring career pathways. Credit for these courses do not automatically qualify the student for the next level as students often repeat levels. Auditions required for placement in these classes.
*All Level 1 classes will also have a PE class listed on their schedule to receive PE credit by covering both PE and Dance TEKS in their dance class. Any dance class beyond the first year will count towards the additional .5 credit of PE required in RRISD. Dance Teams receive PE credit for every semester on the team.

Students utilize a variety of dance forms in a highly visible and competitive organization. Course involves extensive rehearsals and performances outside the school day. Info meeting is in October and , clinic and auditions are held in December and are open to all 9th, 10th, and 11th graders.
