I built this little cabinet over 20 years ago. I also did the tin punching in the door, I use it in my living history setup for both civil war and Revolutionary war. It keeps my modern items out of site and of course gives a replicated touch to my canvas home. The weeping willow has long had many meaning on tin punching as well as cemetery art on headstone dating back to the 16th century I believe. David Gillespie would know best the dates of the funerary art timeline. The cabin is Fort Yargo, a place that hold family ties as we knew the folks that lived there before it was moved to its 3rd location, I was also married at Fort Yargo many many moons ago. So I added something meaningful to the cabinet. Thinking about making another one similar along with a shaker table if I can find someone to turn the legs for me as I never developed the talent for lathe turning. However right now I have

Apothecary shelves slowly starting to fill up. Next few weeks will see Wild Lettuce ointment and tincture back on the shelves, Black Cohosh will be harvested soon, Spearmint will be sheared, dried and made into yummy teas, second harvest of rosemary and lavender for salves. St. John’s Wort, Penny Royal and Mugwort are coming along nicely, Oregano is of course being a bully trying to take over everything🙄. Truly blessed to be given the gift of healing by my Granny

New recipe tonight Creole Butter beans and shrimp, a light rue, sautéed the holy trinity, salt, pepper, Cajun seasoning water beans and slow cooked all day added fresh shrimp at the end and done. It’s absolutely yummy

Going to be pruning my Old time Kentucky Colonel Spearmint in the next few days, so I will have fresh bundles for sale if anyone is interested in them 5.00 a bundle

Got our watermelon field planted yesterday with old varieties of Congo (red meat) and Old heirloom Tendersweet Orange meat. Turnips are getting close to harvest finally. Hens are being prolific layers which I’m grateful for as I’m baking again. It’s the little things in the middle of the storm that keep me grounded.

This is a devastating blow to the state park system. Ranger Steve touched so many lives throughout his career with the DNR, I first met him at Smithgall woods State Park many years ago and struck up a conversation about the North Georgia Mountains loosing her native plants due to the trend of dyi home remedies and people with no experience of how to harvest in nature. He was an amazing person and an absolute phenomenal Ranger who truly cared about our Parks and Natural resources. There will never be another like him. Rest well Ranger Steve.

It has been quite a few years since I’ve had to wear these pieces, but tomorrow I will wear these simple historical pieces of mourning jewelry made of jet and coal for a precious friend and fellow historian to say goodbye and send him off in the way that he wanted.
