Wild DVM

Our mission is to manage wildlife damage while protecting all species and human welfare.

In Kenya we contribute to the erradication of Rabies by vaccinating village guard dogs against this disease and therefore stopping the spread to humans.

Meet the WildDVM Team! 🦓

Dr Bunge Mathew Nchoko

“A dedicated veterinary surgeon from a pastoral community, committed to improving animal health and human health.
Growing up in Narok, a region where livestock plays a central role in the community’s livelihood, the deep connection with livestock and wildlife shaped his passion for veterinary medicine.

I specialize in the health, disease control and management of livestock, focusing on improving productivity and ensuring the well-being of animals to protect the livelihoods of the communities

Joined Wild Dvm to join efforts in the eradication of rabies, a significant concern in Kenyan communities. Being part of the team, I will take part in vaccination, educating the public about rabies prevention and collaboration to implement effective rabies control program.

I am deeply committed to bridging the gap between traditional pastoral practices and modern veterinary science, ensuring that the community is well equipped to combat diseases effectively and mentoring the next generation of veterinary professions.”

Meet the WildDVM Team! 🐘

Dr. Deborah Aparicio, ‘DAKTARI’

“I am a small animal and exotics veterinarian dedicated to my medical practice in Concord, California. I am aIso certified in Wildlife Conservation and Rehabilitation. I understand the importance of mitigating conflict between wildlife and people as I support all species conservation while protecting human welfare. I have supported Kenya’s wildlife since a very young age. Today, as the founder of Wild DVM, I join Kenya in its effort to eradicate Rabies by organizing vaccination campaigns in the Masai Mara.

As all populations grow we face new challenges to coexist. Rabies is an old and new concern, especially in marginal areas with no resources. Vaccinating village dogs against rabies helps slow the spread of this disease from wildlife to people through their dogs.”

Departures for the US based teammates begin today, Dr. Aparicio and Tara are on their way to Kenya from San Francisco, California ✈️🧳

Did you know that rabies is a deadly but preventable disease? By contributing to our campaign, you can ensure that village dogs in Kenya receive the vaccinations they need. Together, we can make these communities safer and healthier. Join us in this fight!

Rabies poses a severe threat to village dogs, affecting their health and safety in critical ways. When a dog contracts rabies, it can experience severe symptoms like aggression, paralysis, and ultimately, death. This not only causes immense suffering for the dogs but also endangers entire communities, as rabies can spread to humans through bites and scratches. By supporting our mission, you help provide life-saving vaccinations that protect these dogs from rabies, ensuring their well-being and safeguarding the health of their human companions. Donate today and be a hero for village dogs.

Home | Village Dogs Someone asked me the other day – what is a village dog? I remember when I couldn’t answer that question – it wasn’t that long ago. How is it possible that most of us have never heard of the breed that represents ~750/850 million of the world’s ~950 million/1 billion dogs? My guess is somew...

WILD DVM joins the fight…

Kenya's Strategic Plan for the Elimination of Human Rabies in Kenya 2014-2030 aims to end human rabies caused by dogs by 2030. The plan's is to gradually reduce the disease's burden by starting in pilot counties and then expanding to the rest of the country. The plan's three main pillars are:
-Mass dog vaccinations: Vaccinating 70% of the dog population is a cost-effective way to stop rabies from spreading between dogs.
-Public education: Raising awareness about rabies prevention and control
-Post-exposure prophylaxis: Providing treatment for people who have been exposed to rabies.

Lions are protected in Kenya, where hunting wildlife has been illegal since 1977. Under Kenyan law, wildlife is not allowed to be use for consumption. Kenyas understand and support this. There is some government compensation for livestock killed by lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas.
(PCF= Predator Compensation Fund).

Conservancies are gradually gaining recognition as reliable and sustainable conservation models that preserve biodiversity as well as improve livelihoods.
With our membership of 195 conservancies representing a combined area of 9 million hectares, we are keen on building resilience of our member conservancies with the aim of protecting nature, conserving biodiversity and improving livelihoods by promoting fair benefit sharing mechanisms.

On this International themed ‘Be Part of the Plan’, which emphasises the need for a collective and coordinated approach to address and reverse the loss of biodiversity and supporting the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (also referred to as the The Biodiversity Plan), let's celebrate our incredible biodiversity by creating a future where humanity and nature thrive together.

RABIES is a deadly viral disease that affects both animals and humans. Here's a comparison of rabies in animals vs humans:

*Animals:*

- Rabies is most commonly found in wild animals like bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes.
- It can also affect domestic animals like dogs, cats, and livestock.
- Infected animals may show unusual behavior, such as aggression, confusion, or paralysis.
- They may also exhibit increased salivation, difficulty swallowing, and a hoarse bark or cry.
- Rabies is usually transmitted through the bite of an infected animal.
- If left untreated, rabies is almost always fatal in animals.

*Humans:*

- Rabies is relatively rare in humans, but it's almost always fatal if left untreated.
- The virus attacks the central nervous system, causing inflammation of the brain (encephalitis).
- Initial symptoms include fever, headache, agitation, and confusion.
- As the disease progresses, symptoms may include hallucinations, paralysis, and difficulty swallowing.
- Human-to-human transmission is rare, but can occur through organ transplantation or bites.
- Prompt medical attention, including post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), can prevent the disease if administered immediately after exposure.

VACCINATION is key! If you're bitten or exposed to an animal with rabies, seek medical help right away and make sure you vaccinate your animals 🐕🐈‍⬛🫏🐎.

This is my patient Claire, an American Village Dog. She was adopted in Nicaragua but now lives here in California. As you can see, she is very similar looking to the village guard dogs in Africa. It’s a small world.

Guard Dog Rabies vaccination and oral deworming in the Masai Mara is not an easy task. We have to catch them first. We vaccinate in remote areas where the Masai depend on their dogs to guard their cattle and herds against predators. Save lives by helping us eradicate Rabies.
