More than half the folks that try and climb El Capitan fail.

And that's not because the climbing on the trade routes of El Cap is all that difficult. It's because people underestimate the overall objective and don't take the time to train. Big wall climbing is about being a multi pitch trad technician. You're taking all of the skills of a multi pitch trad climber and applying it on the grand stage of the biggest monoliths of the world.

Efficiency is the key to success, and what better way to learn than with guides who have climbed it multiple times over?

Over the (HOT) 4th of July weekend, we ran another AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Course up at Donner Summit. 4 folks came out and learned a ton of new tools and new applications for a professional context and prepared themselves for the next steps in a career outdoors. That was fun, thanks gang!

To wrap up June we did a weekend of Trad Clinics at Snowshed on Donner Summit. Kevin taught a Trad: Beyond the Basics Course and an Intro to Trad Course.
In Beyond the Basics we talked about things that might be holding us back and then dialed in on the three biggest factors: placing bad gear, being afraid of falling, and crack climbing movement.
The coolest thing about this day for me as an instructor is that ALL the participants made plans to climb together the next day! Difficulty finding partners should have made our list of things that can stunt your growth as a climber and I was so stoked that everyone climbed together after the program. 💕
Our Intro to Trad Course started with an efficient ground school and then multiple reps mock leading and taking falls. Every piece participants placed was assessed with me by their side with an emphasis on practicality without getting lost in minor "textbook" nuances that are impractical concerns to the cruxing climber. Intro to Trad grads have already been out trad climbing on their own since the clinic!🧗‍♂️

In June we taught an Intro To Sport Climbing and an Intro to Multi-pitch Clinic at Indian Rock near Castle Rock State Park.
We turned a convenient Bay Area crag into a training ground, providing expert instruction with guided practice and a groundwork of "next steps" for participants to continue a steady but careful progression.
Since the clinic people have been leading outdoors and climbing multipitches WITHOUT guides. This is what VP is all about!! Independence.
Nearly half the participants utilized a discount we offered in collaboration with for Underrepresented Climbers in Financial Need. VP is stoked to continue exploring ways to break down barriers for people to access professional rock climbing instruction. 
Courses were taught by AMGA Certified Rock Guide* Kevin Heinrich (), someone with significant first ascents around the world.
Seriously good climbers giving seriously good instruction, that's Vertical Pursuits.

Playing a bit of catch-up on social media! We've been busy!
Back in June we hosted a Camp and Climb Weekend in Pine Creek Canyon. We stayed cool in the shade and climbed routes from 5.7 to 5.11c. Participants took the lead on sport and trad routes; taking falls, getting coached, gaining confidence, and learning new things.
Some folks got updated on modern skills and practices, some gained confidence in their leading and falling, some got mentored on their trad skills, and some just logged mileage. All bookended by some shady camping along Pine Creek. What a weekend!
Thanks to everyone who came out, it was an absolute pleasure to climb with you all.
Our next Camp and Climb is scheduled for September 14 + 15 at Calaveras Dome, a multi-pitch trad adventure mecca! Spots will be limited to facilitate two days of multi-pitch climbing on the 2,000ft walls overlooking the Salt Springs Reservoir. Don't miss it! Link in Bio for more details and booking!

This week I had the good privilege of taking out Nathan who is the recreation special use permit officer on a tour of the leap!

Nathan is in charge of processing our special use permits through El Dorado National Forest and has been working full time to not only get us out guiding at the leap, but also facilitating a ton of different projects for the Forest Service.

We asked Nathan to come shadow a day of climbing, and for his first multi pitch ever, we got to take to him up the ultra classic bears reach! It's great to be working with the and to be promoting safe and sustainable recreation on our public lands!

I'm teaming up with .dood of to introduce a Vertical Medicine Course that covers improvised rope rescue skills for climbers with the addition of life saving medical skills.

Many rock rescue courses go over technical rope skills to retrieve and manage an injured climber, but lack actual medical skills to treat wounds and potentially save the life of that critically injured climber.
The goal and purpose of this course is to combine the technical rope skills with the hands-on medical skills needed to make a difference in rescuing an injured climber.

Many of the lead skills we learn indoors translates well to outdoor sport climbing, but there's a ton of nuances that are overlooked when people make that transition from gym to crag. I love being able to really hone in on the subtitles that make sport climbing fun and safe and being able to deliver all of my the experience I've gathered from hang do***ng and falling on bolts back to the community.

Fast, safe and efficient. These are the concepts that not only go hand in hand with each other, but are also the concepts and traits we should all strive for in the mountains.

This anchor embodies all of those things and takes about 10 seconds to create.

Next time you're at the top of a route and you see a big ol' fat tree, simply walk around it with your lead line, tie a BHK (big hunkin' knot) and belay your follower/followers up the route!
