Important new CA Law in effect! AB 1950 reduces the length of probation for misdemeanors and felonies. If you are currently on probation, you may be eligible now to terminate it early. Restore your 4th amendment right to be free from unreasonable search and seizure! Consult with me to see if you qualify.
Frederick Douglass was an abolitionist and powerful orator. His speech, "The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro" was a searing examination of the hypocrisy of celebrating the United States independence from Britain while still enslaving thousands of African Americans, utilizing them to build the foundation of the country.
Douglass delivered his keynote address in 1852 at an Independence Day celebration in which he asks, “What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciation of tyrants, brass fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all your religious parade and solemnity, are, to Him, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy -- a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages. There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of the United States, at this very hour.”
His words still ring true today, as the 13th amendment still allows slavery as a punishment for crime. Today we encourage you to read Douglass’ words and reflect on them as the fight for justice continues. Here is a link to the full speech: shorturl.at/mntI3

Building Blocks of America: While not much is known about Prince Whipple, he had an important role in the fight for freedom. Prince was educated as a slave. His knowledge allowed him, along with other slaves, to petition the government to end slavery. His efforts make him an honorable figure in Black history.
Joshua Johnston was the first African American to gain recognition as an artist. One of his popular paintings is named "The Westwood Children." What you can interpret from this painting?
As we continue to fight for justice here in America, we must learn about our civil rights first. Why haven't most Americans learned about their rights? If you are an American-born citizen, it is assumed that you should already know these; but if the school systems are not educating us on our civil rights, we must take it upon ourselves to learn them. Please take a moment to read about your rights from the U.S. District Attorney's Office, District of Minnesota, Attorney B. Todd Jones.

Today in Black History: In 1868, the 14th Amendment validated the citizenship of African Americans.
Building Blocks of America: As we all know, America was built on the backs of enslaved Black people, but we rarely hear about their influence on the birth of our nation.
This is especially true in art history. Today I share with you the story of Peter Salem and his role and depiction in the Battle at Bunker Hill.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: We can all agree that that no knock warrants have police brutality written all over them. Is the warrant being issued the problem or can we say that those in blue have not had the proper training to use less lethal force? In any instance, when you are being confronted by the police they must announce who they are, either before entering the residence or when they have forcefully inserted themselves into the residence.
Join me this Friday, July 17 for a virtual townhall meeting hosted by African Advocacy Network, Africa House Sacramento, Priority Africa Network, and ThriveAfrica US. We will be discussing the affects of COVID-19, housing/tenancy rights, civil rights, and immigration. I'll be presenting on police/citizen encounters. This is what Lowndes County Supervisor Harry Sanders of Mississippi, a proud elected official, US citizen, and beneficiary of slavery, has to say about bringing up slavery today.
America was the last country in the modern world to realize that slavery could not survive innovation. The industrial revolution and ability to adapt machines to do the work of man made slavery, and you could say colonialism, inefficient and costly.
Since it's beginning in 1619, slavery was the tool that built America's assets and fed its growth by harvesting products for use and trade, and free labor for the building of towns, cities, and infrastructure.
The Supreme Court of the United States issued decisions that kept slavery alive and thriving. You would think that in a nation of laws, someone should have thought to limit the use of slavery after some time. And thus lies the ultimate hypocrisy of America: freedom and justice for all, except for the race of people they kidnapped, stole, and captured.
Let's not get it wrong, the U.S. intentionally decided upon slavery as their tool to build their country, and did not ever contemplate slavery ending for over 400 years. No moral obligation, nor any respect for human life ran through the veins of its citizens telling them it was wrong and should not be done to humans. WELL NO WONDER WHY IT HURTS AND STINGS WHEN WE SAY BLACK LIVES MATTER!
July 2, 1777: The Vermont Republic (a sovereign nation at the time) became the first colony to abolish slavery.

When we are confronted by a police officer we often ask the question, "well what do I do?" If you are in that situation just ask Siri. Many of you have probably already heard about this trick; here's the article again with step-by-step instructions on how to install the "I'm getting pulled over" shortcut on iPhone.
https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/16/us/iphone-police-shortcut-record-trnd/index.html
Tell Siri you're getting pulled over and this iPhone shortcut will record your interaction with the police Amid the widespread protests and anger over police brutality, an iPhone shortcut that allows users to automatically record their interactions with the police is gaining popularity.
Every week, I would like to share a moment in Black history that has impacted, and continues to impact, the fight for civil rights today.
In July 1839, captured Africans aboard the ship, La Amistad, began a revolt against the ship’s crew. This important moment in history was a remarkable feat in the fight for freedom.

People with complaints against Sac PD use the Office of Public Safety and Accountability to lodge the complaint then send a copy of that complaint to Sacramento NAACP. Now more than ever we need to make a record without fear. Following up with your complaint is vital. If after 10-15 days you have no response, be prepared to follow up and ask about the status of the complaint. Keep inquiring until a decision is made. This is a key point in history where we must document occasions of wrongdoing. Stay strong. Stay safe.
