The Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America (AMJA) offers its warmest congratulations to the Muslim Ummah in general and the Muslims in North America in particular, upon the arrival of Eid al-Fitr and announces that tomorrow Friday April 21st, 2023 is the first day of Shawwal and the first day of Eid. This is due to confirmed sightings in a number of Muslim countries on Thursday.

And we beseech the Almighty to lift the afflictions from the Ummah of Muhammad, to stop their bloodshed wherever they may be, to fulfill His promise to them of salvation, victory, and empowerment. Allah’s pleasure is our goal, and He is the Guide to the Straight Path.

الحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله

فإن مجمع فقهاء الشريعة بأمريكا يزف إلى مسلمي الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية ومن ورائهم الأمة كلها أطيب تهانيه بحلول عيد الفطر، ويعلن عليهم ما يأتي:

أن غدا الجمعة الموافق 21 من شهر أبريل من عام 2023م هو أول أيام عيد الفطر المبارك

وذلك بناء على ثبوت رؤية الهلال في عدد من الدول الإسلامية

ويبتهل إلى الله جل وعلا أن يرفع البلاء عن أمة محمد عامة، وأن يحقن دماءهم حيثما كانوا، وأن ينجز لهم وعده بالإنجاء والنصرة والتمكين، والله من وراء القصد
وهو الهادي إلى سواء السبيل.

All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, Companions, and true followers.

The Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America (AMJA) congratulates all Muslims, in North America and all over the world, on the upcoming Eid al-Fitr. We ask Allah to conclude Ramadan for them with His pleasure and to spare them from hellfire.

Firstly, we want to clarify again AMJA’s position with regard to moon sighting. We adopt the global sighting position, not local sighting, and we take into consideration definite calculations only in terms of negating sighting, not affirming sighting. However, due to the difficulty of waiting for the sightings in western regions, AMJA believes that it is permissible for communities in different time zones to act upon their own sightings and the sightings of countries to the east of them. This way, once isha’ has begun for them they will know what their situation is and can prepare for the next day.

Based on this, those in eastern regions are not obliged to wait for the sightings of western regions, but if they can wait then they may wait. AMJA reiterates that the unity of people in fasting and breaking the fast is an important matter intended by the Legislator; this is especially so for people in the same city. Therefore, whenever the majority in a community adopts a legal position, the rest of the community should follow them, so as to be united and not divided. This is regardless of whether that position is based upon moon sighting or calculations.

According to the information that we have, it will be easy to see the new moon’s crescent in the US and some places in the world on Thursday. The Assembly will follow the news of sightings on Thursday and will announce any confirmed sightings right away. If it is not seen, the final announcement will be made after the setting of the sun on the west coast on Thursday, since it would be too difficult for communities to wait longer than that. Again, AMJA emphasizes that other time zones do not have to wait for this final announcement.

We ask Allah to allow us to experience many more Ramadans, to accept our worship, and to forgive our sins.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Grantor of Mercy. All praise is due to Allah, and may His peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah.

The Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America (AMJA) congratulates Muslims throughout the world, and specifically in the US, on the upcoming arrival of Ramadan and announces the following:

Tomorrow, Wednesday March 22, 2023, will be the 30th of Sha’ban, and the day after tomorrow, Thursday March 23, 2023, is the first day of the blessed month of Ramadan. We ask Allah to make it come, by Allah’s leave, with goodness and success for us all and for the entire ummah.
This is due to the lack of certain confirmation of a sighting of the crescent in the United States, especially with the obstruction in the sky preventing sight due to rain in California. This is in addition to the fact that a number of Islamic nations in the East have announced that the crescent of Ramadan was not sighted tonight. Thus, tomorrow is the completion of Sha’ban.

The Assembly announces this to the Muslims in America, and this is what the extent of our effort has led us to, and it does not rebuke those who have reached another conclusion. Each person is trusted regarding his religion.

The assembly, represented by the fatwa committee, makes this announcement to the Muslims of the United States, praying to Allah, the Majestic, the Most High, to accept the righteous actions of us all, just as we pray to Allah to lift the calamities from our brothers and sisters of our ummah around the world, and specifically to aid those harmed by the earthquakes in Turkey and the Syria and in other places wherever they may be, and to fulfill what He has promised them by saving them and giving them support.

Allah is All-Knowing of people’s intentions, and He is the one who guides to the straight path.

الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله، وعلى آله وصحبه ومن والاه، أما بعد: فإن مجمع فقهاء الشريعة بأمريكا يزف إلى مسلمي الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية ومن ورائهم الأمة كلها أطيب تهانيه بمقدم شهر رمضان المبارك، ويعلن عليهم ما يأتي:

أن غدا الأربعاء الموافق 22 من شهر مارس من عام 2023م هو المتمم لشهر شعبان، وأن بعد غد الخميس الموافق 23 من شهر مارس من عام 2023م هو أول أيام شهر رمضان المبارك، نسأل الله أن يعيده علينا وعليكم وعلى الأمة كلها بالخير واليمن والتوفيق والرفعة بإذن الله.
ووجه ذلك عدم ورود إفادات يقينية إلى المجمع برؤية الهلال في الولايات المتحدة، لا سيما مع حالة الإغمام التي تعيشها مناطق كاليفورينا بسبب المطر، وما يعنيه ذلك من تعذر الرؤية، الأمر الذي يترجح معه كذلك إكمال عدة شعبان ثلاثين يوما، فضلا عما أعلن عنه من عديد من البلاد الإسلامية في الشرق من تعذر رؤية هلال رمضان الليلة، فيكون غدا هو المتمم لعدة شعبان
وإن المجمع إذ يعلن هذا على الجاليات المسلمة في الولايات المتحدة، ليؤكد على أن هذا هو ما انتهى إليه اجتهاده في هذا المقام، ولا ينكر على من ظهر له خلاف ذلك، والمرء أمين على دينه.
وإن المجمع ممثلا في لجنته الدائمة للإفتاء إذ يعلن هذا البيان على مسلمي الولايات المتحدة ليبتهل إلى الله جل وعلى أن يرفع البلاء عن أمة محمد عامة، وعن إخوتنا متضرري الزلازل خاصة في بلاد الشام وتركيا وغيرها م بلاد المسلمين المأزومة، بارك الله للمسلمين أجمعين في شهرهم، ووفقهم فيه إلى الصالح من القول والعمل، وتقبله منهم بقبول حسن،

The Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America is pleased to congratulate all Muslims on the beginning of the blessed month of Ramadan. In-sha-Allah, AMJA will be publishing the news of any credible sightings of the moon anywhere in the World or in the Americas once it is verified. If the crescent is not sighted anywhere in the World before sunset on Tuesday (Pacific Daylight Time zone), AMJA will issue a statement indicating the lack of verified sightings.

Based on the previous statements of AMJA, the inhabitants of each time zone may declare the lack of sightings in their region after the lapse of enough time for reporting any credible sightings in their region and the regions to the east of them. They will not be required to wait for sightings in the rest of the World or wait until sunset in the West Coast. This is to avoid hardship and to ensure that the matter will be clear for people before they leave their masâjid after ishâ.

يسر مجمع فقهاء الشريعة بأمريكا أن يهنئ جميع المسلمين بدخول شهر رمضان المكرم، ويعلن أنه سينشر على صفحته ثبوت الرؤية الشرعية في أي قطر من أقطار العالم، وكذلك في أي بقعة بالأمريكتين، متى تم التحقق من الخبر. فإذا لم ير الهلال في أي مكان حتى غروب شمس يوم الثلاثاء في الساحل الغربي، فسيصدر المجمع بيانًا عندها لأهل الولايات المتحدة القارية بعدم ثبوت الرؤية فيها.

وعملًا بما صدر به البيانات السابقة، فإن لأهل كل منطقة زمنية الإعلان عن عدم ثبوت الرؤية عندهم بعيد انصرام وقت الترائي في منطقتهم إذا كان الهلال لم ير فيها ولا في الأقطار الواقعة إلى الشرق منها، وليس عليهم التربص إلى الفجر انتظارًا لترائيه في باقي أنحاء المعمورة ولا إلى غروب الشمس في الساحل الغربي، وذلك دفعًا للحرج، وليكون الناس على بينة من أمرهم قبل انصرافهم من صلاة العشاء.

Due to the crescent of Ramadan being sighted in a number of Muslim countries, AMJA announces that Saturday, April 2nd, 2022 will be the first day of Ramadan.

AMJA takes this opportunity to congratulate the Muslims all around the world on the arrival of the blessed month of Ramadan. We ask Allah the Exalted to help us all fast the month, pray during its nights, and take advantage of it to perform good deeds. We also ask Him to remove this epidemic and to always keep us safe and healthy.

To proceed:

The Assembly of Muslims Jurists of America (AMJA) congratulates all Muslim communities in the United States of America for the arrival of the month of Ramadan. It is happy to announce to them the results of their following of the moon sighting reports from various agencies: Tuesday the 13th of April will be the first day of the blessed month of Ramadan, and Monday the 12th of April will be the completing day of Sha'ban (the 30th of Sha'ban). This is because the moon sighting was not possible the eve of Monday (Sunday night), according to scientific facts.

As we announce this, we advise the Muslims in our country and throughout the world to be keen on attaining unity and harmony. We also advise everyone to fear Allah and to do their best in acts of worship and obedience in this blessed month, and to be keen on taking the means of safety.

May Allah give everyone a blessed year. May Allah accept good deeds from us and all of you.
