This crime was horrific as it involved a se assault against a senior citizen by a young person. The perpetrator is finally being held accountable. Since I took Office in 2011, my team has solved over 30 Cold Case files. That Cold Case unit had been shuttered by the previous DA. The tragic beating death of Michael Tyree in our county prison cell was a terrible crime. Our office has consistently argued that the three guards acted with a "conscious disregard for human life." This week, as part of a complex plea deal, they finally admitted their crime in open court. I will always share in the sorrow of the Tyree's family over Michael's death. We can and should continue to address mental health issues as a society with less judgment and more understanding. This case proves that point more than any other in my career as your district attorney.
