Pastor John spent the day with his grandson Jonathan in San Francisco, stopping at Grace Cathedral to contemplate the wonders of God. You can see him in his red vest if you zoom in. He also noted a storefront church in Richmond. High church, low church… we are all God’s children.

Friends,

In seeking to understand a missionary's experience I will ask if there is a song, a scene from a film, a Scripture, or something from a book that seems to capture how they are feeling. Reflecting on his ten years in the Horn of Africa, it was reading the final sentence in George Eliot’s Middlemarch that said it best for Joshua:
“For the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.”
I asked him to tell me more.

"Hidden moments of the soul wrestling with God in the night. Sitting for hours with a team mate listening to their dreams and desires. Consoling our children when they are picked on by the local kids for the way they look and talk. Every year had its difficulties on the field. There has never been a smooth, easy going, peaceful year. Suffering and hardship of various kinds has marked every year. Nights of heartache. Mornings of longing for good. Tension. Interpersonal conflicts and the hard work of peacemaking. So much to do. Even to share what God has been doing in our lives seems lacking or boastful. This is not because there aren’t good things to share; there are many. But it is because what we are most content with in our lives is what is hidden, what a larger audience will never know. What is hidden is what does not make the newsletters very often. What is hidden is not even quantifiably significant. What is hidden doesn’t yield an immediate return. What is hidden seems many times to reflect only the struggle, the heartache, the hope deferred.

But there is one hope we have, that our labor is not in vain in the Lord! That the culmination of the unhistoric acts of our hopefully faithfully hidden life, will somehow benefit and bless our community in the Horn of Africa. That others may one day ‘taste and see that the Lord is good’ whether or not they know of our contribution. The hope that the way we dream, work, love, and live our lives here; that the sweat, the dirt under our nails, that the pouring out of our lives will be a broken, but transformed blessing to the world God has called us to.

God knows. God has been constant. Jesus has been good. He has been our strength, our song, our High Priest comforting and guiding us along. It has been bittersweet but we wouldn’t trade all the discomfort of the last ten years for anything. They have led us closer to God, made us more needy of Him, and reminded us of what really matters.

For the next ten years we hope that we stay hidden, faithful and grounded in Jesus above all else. We hope that we continue to find the unseen moments of our days as the groundwork and foundation that will leave our kids and our communities better off than before. Whether we start businesses, mentor team mates, homeschool our kids, host neighborhood friends, my hope is that whatever we do will mean that our community, our city, our region of Africa, will find that 'things are not so ill as they might have been,' and that many will ‘taste and see that the Lord is good.'”

I have been honored to serve missionaries like Joshua for over 30 years. For those of you who have prayed for and contributed to my needs and ministry expenses, thank you again. On the Aslan side, being able to put funds into the hands of missionaries and national leaders who can wisely use them in their communities with acts of mercy and kindness, has proven to build bridges to the gospel hundreds upon hundreds of times. This, combined with the work of ministering to missionaries and their families, is my great joy.

Next up for me is a return to Ethiopia June 11-19 for a week with national disciple makers and pastors, followed by a special event in Chicago for Afghanistan relief.

I have a comprehensive listing of Aslan’s ongoing projects and will email it to you if you are interested.

Also, if you are not following us on the Signal App, simply download the free Signal app and then send me your mobile number. Short postings of praise reports and prayer requests every day.

As always we invite your prayer request so we can pray for you.
