As you enjoy your time on the field, don’t forget to protect yourself from the sun! Here are some key sun safety guidelines to keep in mind:

🧴 Use Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Physical sunscreens with Zinc or Titanium Dioxide are particularly effective. Use one ounce (two tablespoons) for face, ears, neck, arms, and legs.

⏰ Apply Early: Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before playing. Coaches and parents, please help younger players with application.

🔄 Reapply Often: Reapply every two hours, especially during prolonged outdoor activities or heavy perspiration.

☁️ UV Protection: Remember, UV exposure happens even on overcast days. Check the local UV index to assess the risk—higher UV index means greater potential for damage.

🌳 Seek Shade: Between games or during breaks, find shade to cool off and protect yourself further.

👕 Cover Up: Wear clothing with UPF >30, hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses for extra protection.

Everything you need to know about a potential turf ban in Santa Clara County In an effort to provide all the education and resources needed to better understand the impact of a possible turf field ban happening in Santa Clara County and the City of Sunnyvale, Cal North would like to provide the following information. 

As summer temperatures persist throughout Northern California, it’s crucial to be mindful of the impact extreme heat can have on player health and safety. Proper hydration and knowing when to take breaks are key to preventing injuries like muscle cramps and even heat stroke. Here are some essential guidelines:

💧 Hydration is critical: Players should drink water before, during, and after practices and games. Coaches, ensure there’s always plenty of water available.

🌡️ Know your limits: According to U.S. Soccer’s Recognize to Recover program, training or match play should be adjusted or even canceled based on temperature thresholds (see Step 2).

🚦 Follow Alert Levels (see Step 3):
Black: No outdoor training, delay or cancel.
Red: Max 1 hour, 4 breaks of 4 mins each.
Orange: Max 2 hours, 4 breaks of 4 mins each hour.
Yellow: Use discretion, 3 breaks of 4 mins each hour.
Green: Normal activities, 3 breaks of 3 mins each hour.

🧊 Safety first: Cool players in shaded areas, use ice towels, and ensure unlimited access to fluids. Know the signs of heat-related illness and have emergency procedures in place, including calling 9-1-1 if necessary.

Remember, California's diverse climate means understanding local conditions is vital. Leagues and clubs should communicate environmental conditions and modify activities as needed to keep everyone safe.

Here are a few tips/recommendations to ensure you’re breathing safely during your outdoor activities:

🌬️ Check the air quality forecast daily.

⏰ Exercise in the morning when ground-level ozone pollution is lower.
🚧 Avoid running near roads and freeways where air pollution is often higher.
