How deep should a storage bench be?

15-20 inches
Benches can have a depth anywhere from 15-20 inches (38-51 cm), although the typical bench used for dining is considered to be around 17 ½ inches (44 cm).

A depth (or width) past 20 inches (51 cm) will not be as comfortable for the average person to sit on.

In addition, the average seat height for a storage bench is 18”. The same as the average height for a dining chair.

This height allows for a comfortable seating for most people with or without a table present.

Imagine if you left home for 2 days…

G0623X Sliding Table Saw

I just got the confirmation email that my new saw, a 10 ft slider, is on the ocean and will be here in May.

With that news I’m starting the process of getting my Small shop ready for this BIG saw.

This saw has been the centerpiece of production in my shop for years and the o Ly reason id ever sell it would be to replace it with a bigger saw. I hitch I am doing. So, I’ll need to sell my 5hp G0623X Grizzly slider saw.

It is in excellent shape. I keep it dialed in by using the 5 cut method to make sure the miter sled arm is squared up.

The saw will come with EVERYTHING intact, multiple Tenryu aluminum alloy gold medal blades, new scoring blade installed and a custom cart that allows for the cart to be used in a stationary position and to be rolled around by one person.

The one sticky part will be that I’ll need to keep the saw until a couple days after receiving my new saw in May. So, coordination will be key.

Why am I posting this a couple months out? Because if someone wants it and has to travel, a Head’s up is a kind courtesy 😊 Also, for anyone that wants a demo of the saw there is time for that before committing 😉👍🏽

The slide action and scoring blade are major contributors to the clean cross cuts im able to get.

New Tool Tuesday!!!

As a one man shop there is a paramount need to keep every asset working as best as possible 😁

Hhmmm…

What do I mean by “Assets”?

Well, money of course 🙄😜 but things like TIME, ENERGY, CONCENTRATION & FOCUS are all assets.

There is a finite amount available per day 😑

Having run out of each of those on various days I’ve become acutely aware of the value behind finding solutions that help to reduce spending each asset until it’s depleted 😑

I’ve found a great solution to help me lift and lower very large and very heavy items 🙌🏽😁🙌🏽

I’ve already spent time testing the height, weight and maneuvering capabilities and am a true believer 👍🏽😊👍🏽

Now all I need is 4 more hours in the day and all is good 😜🤣

You only get one chance to make a perfect cut!

And… 4 for 4 must be a testament to a precise steady hand 😊

The hardware involved is quite specific and needs very accurate assembly and adjustment to make sure the seams are secure and clean when open and closed.

Fold down leaves require some really specific tools and application of effort.

From top to bottom;

Old Doors doors that were un-insulated, insecure, noisy and drab.

New Doors that ARE insulated, extremely secure, very quiet during operation, add noise reduction inside and out and update the look and curb appeal!

Slide down Screen Door adds ventilation, increases privacy, allows for retention of airborne material (sawdust) and will allow for the shop dog (Piper) to be around and stay inside 😊

A great way for our little operation to end the year and to begin a new one 🙌🏽😊🙌🏽

It might be hard to tell but this Bastogne Walnut desktop weighs 460 lbs and is 8 ft long on the long side and 4.5 ft long on the short side.

I made the legs from C-channel steel. It was cut, shaped, welded, ground, sanded and polished to match the clients aesthetic request.

Commissions like this are a challenge in regards to how many skill sets are needed to complete the project.

As well as the dozens of times this wood had to be handled to be cut, shaped, sanded, finished & polished. That alone was physically taxing and took quite a bit of energy.

I was genuinely able to share in my client’s appreciation for the final product due to the amount of time and effort I put into it😍

I’m extremely happy that she will have the workspace she’s been wanting. And that I could help to bring her vision to life 😁

Putting an aesthetic border underneath this 36” x 78” x 4/4 Ash tabletop.

The client wants it to look a bit more thick than the 4/4 allows.

So…

Doubling up the material is an option that doesn’t add cost or cause a delay in the timeline due to changing up material for thickness.

Having a need for power, reliability and accuracy the search for a handheld circular saw began months ago.

After many recommendations, trials and conversations with Industry professionals a tried and true option was chosen!

“What’s it like adding a new tool to your shop every month?”

Hhmmm…

Well… it’s kind’ve like moving 🤔

Every time I get a new tool I get a significant UPGRADE in performance, dependability and quality 😊

But…

With that comes a serious setback in immediate results with respect to completion of current projects/commissions, prospecting and workflow.

It takes time to scout out the perfect tool. To purchase, acquire, receive, pick-up, transport, bring into the shop and get familiar with this new tool/machine.

Quite often the tool has to be wired, or re-wired, with the correct wiring. A dedicated space on the shop floor had to be determined and designated and the tool has to be placed into that space.

And that part isn’t easy in a small shop. It had to make sense and fit the current, and future, work flow 😬

Then…

When work picks back up I HAVE To KNOW that this tool (one that I’ve never used before and have no idea of it’s performance) will do all I’ve banked on 🤞🏽

And once I turn it on I have to start production in “3rd gear” in order to catch back up!!!

So…

Am I smart to buy and incorporate a new tool every month?

No!

Does it put me ahead of my competition and the field in general?!?

Yes!!

Does it allow me the freedom to continuously choose high level and challenging projects?!?!?

Oooooohhhhh YES!!!!
