Our opening reception for "More than Ordinary," a collection of photography by Miguel Gutierrez Jr. is this Friday evening from 6:00pm-9:00pm at the Latino Center!

This is Miguel's first solo-exhibition and we are so grateful that he is trusting us with the gallery debut of his work. This collection is about celebrating Latino/Latinx/Latine culture. Across the United States and across Mexico's states, the way people celebrate, identify with their cultural roots, and find community is so different and yet so beautiful.

This collection is about celebrating cultura, celebrating the people, and celebrating the fact that we can always find community anywhere we go.

Join us this Friday for a night of drinks, music, community, and celebrating Miguel's first gallery exhibition!

We are excited to announce that we were one of the organizations accepted into Social Venture Partners' Fast Pitch program!

This program is overseen by SVP boardmember Jay Thomas and is geared to coach organizations on crafting pitches for donors. Coaching helps bring out the strenths of the nonprofit speaker and improve weaknesses in the pitch they're crafting. Feedback is provided for groups and overall, the Latino Center's ability to connect with future sponsors is the focus of our participation.

A huge thank you to SVP for the inclusion and thank you to RichieRichie916Visuals for these beautiful photographs!

The Latino Center of Art and Culture is proud to host MORE THAN ORDINARY, an exhibition of new works by photographer Miguel Gutierrez Jr. The opening reception will be Friday September 6th, 2024 from 6-9pm at the Latino Center.

The photographs in MORE THAN ORDINARY include portraits and documentary photographs of Latinx cultural celebrations from California, Texas, New Mexico and Mexico. These celebrations are full of vibrancy and beauty, across borders and states where cultural identity is formed by community and pride. While some may see traditions as everyday or ordinary, Miguel sees something more - with these photos the artist presents the greatness he sees from behind the lens.

Miguel Gutierrez Jr. is a multimedia producer, photojournalist and the current Visuals Editor at CalMatters, a nonprofit news organization covering the stories of California. Prior to CalMatters he was the Photo Editor at the Texas Tribune in Austin, Texas where he traveled to the Texas-Mexico border to cover the migrant caravans, visited migrant shelters in Reynosa, Nuevo Laredo, Monterey, and traveled to Guatemala to cover the effect of President Trump’s immigration policies. During the height of the COVID pandemic, Miguel followed “last responders” and first responders in the Rio Grande Valley, and was present at the protests against police brutality and the death of George Floyd. He holds a double M.A. in Journalism and Latin American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin and a B.A. in Latino Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Join us on September 6th for a night of music, drinks, and community!

This documentary followed the City of Altars program where we partnered with the Washington Neighborhood Center, Sol Collective, Taller Arte del Nuevo Amanecer, and the Sojourner Truth African Heritage Museum to offer free altar making workshops to the community.

This documentary explores Día de los Mu***os and Kwanzaa seeking to explore not just the reason people celebrate, but how celebrations can be expressed in a way that honors their historical origin as well as the changes they have endured.
