Let’s talk about the folks who are trying to backtrack on mocking Gus Walz because they didn’t know he had a disability.

Right. Okay. So …

Let’s start with the fact that he’s a seventeen year old kid who was so proud of his dad, whom he obviously loves deeply, that he was moved to tears. That’s beautiful, and a hell of a testament to their relationship.

But sure, some people thought his reaction was over the top and “weird.” And therefore fair game. Until they heard he has a disability.

(So, to recap, it would have been a-okay in that crowd to bully a typical kid for *acting atypical* but maybe he should be off limits now that they know he has a diagnosis.)

Pull up a chair, won’t you, friends?

Being an accepting, inclusive, and not completely sh*tty human isn’t about having access to everyone’s medical records. It’s about humanity. It’s about not having to know that there’s a label for a fellow human’s unique constellation of strengths and challenges in order to approach them with compassion.

It’s about not needing an explanation for why someone comes across a little - or a lot - differently from the average bear in order to indulge their quirks, celebrate their differences, support their challenges and accommodate their access needs, to give them extra time and love and leeway.

Labels / diagnoses / identities are important and valid and helpful in a million different ways, but they shouldn’t ever be the ticket that we demand from others before granting them entry into the arena of our empathy. The only fare needed is humanity.

So lay off the kid. Not just because he has a disability, but because he’s human, and that’s reason enough.

** Editing to add: Since so many of y’all are determined to turn this into some kind of “gotcha” moment that it really, really isn’t, let me save us all some time and trouble by telling you right here in the post that, Yes, I did say exactly the same thing when people were talking about Barron Trump …

The moral of this story: change ypur thinking💡💡💡

I have to be honest, because I think this might help another divorced mother of adult children. At first when I found out my son and his girlfriend from LA were not going to stay with me , or his brother, but at his dad’s girlfriend’s house~ it was kind of like a sucker punch, I had to reframe. Then when thought I was meeting him for a short hello at his brother’s after his dad picked him up from the airport and he texted me after I arrived that he was too tired to meet~ I felt really disappointed because it has been a year.

I struggled to fight those feelings of victim ,and seeing not what we would have compared to what we would not. It felt really crappy and I could literally feel the disappointment in my body .

Yeah I cried some tears… but not too many before my higher Self told my ~woe is me self with a lowercase s. look at what you do have. Be grsteful you have a son who wants to visit; be happy you have a son, period.

I had to do the work I have studied my whole life , to turn this Titanic heading towards an iceberg AROUND!

I started to feel what my ego was feeling . Like Patrick is selfish~ thoughts like I must be a pretty terribly-failed parent to have him not want to spend time with me.

The teachings of so many masters and wise teachers echoed that “…you are your thoughts… it all begins with your though.”

“There is a intellugence in the universe…”

My ego was wounded and overtaking my KNOWING thst sll is well.

I started to ask the questions from Byron Kate’s “The Work:” is this really true? Can you absolutely know that it’s true? Does that thoughtbring peace or stress? What emotions arise when ypu think thst thought? What images do you see past and future and what physical visceral sensations arise as you witness them?

Stick with me folks( this is a lot, but these are engrained patterns).

What is it about your body that you don’t want to experience again?

After investigsting these feelings snd answering these 4 key questions The Work invited me to turn around my original thought in a number of interesting ways which helped me to see this from other points of view and vantage points.

I started to appreciate and anticipate the time wonderful we had planned for the next afternoon

I also saw from his vantage point thst it can be hard juggling between divouced parents and all the people he’d want to spend time with while here and in Chicago.

And you know, we had a wonderful time! And although it is a shared visit, I’ll dpend other precious time with him Sunday . It is all in how I looked at this situation. Which made all the difference. Is there anything better than spending time with your loved ones? I am very grateful for our shared time… Ben, Patrick and Ash🙏💕 to look at the rainbow and not the rain.
