It’s amazing where business can take you if you follow Jahana Anderson’s advice: “Go big, don’t be scared and believe in yourself!” Jahana and her husband John have followed that pathway into a historic space in Downtown St. Joseph. The Provident Brunch House & Brewery is now open in a building that served as a bank in the 1920s.

Jahana says one of the coolest things has been people coming in to share stories and memories from the historic 5th and Francis building. She tells us that some of them even used to work there! But...we’re guessing they are probably enjoying the delicious food and drinks more than working the ol’ 9 to 5 job.

Manufacturing Expansion Opens at Hillyard Technical Center 08/21/2024

Hillyard Technical Center opened doors to its new simulated manufacturing facility and celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house Tuesday.

The new addition is a 22,000 square foot facility that will house welding, CNC machinery and factory maintenance, where students will learn in a hands-on environment. The expansion is a major win for the St. Joseph community, as it is an example of the business, education and government entities coming together to fill a crucial workforce need. Local manufacturers were a major factor in determining what skills and equipment the facility would educate students about.

For the last few days we’ve hosted Leadership Missouri in St. Joseph, showing these business leaders from throughout the state the best of our community.

They were there for the last day of Training Camp and visited Hillyard Technical Center, the 139th Airlift Wing, Mosaic Life Care Foundation Children’s Discovery Center, the Houlne Center for Convergent Technology at Missouri Western State University, Gray Manufacturing and some of great restaurants and bars. They also got to meet the Dean of the UMKC School of Medicine and the Associate Dean in charge of the St. Joseph medical school campus.

Their first day in town included LifeLine Foods, Housing Improvement Initiative, Adopt-a-Block and Youth Alliance.

And those were just some of the highlights of our community!

For Adam Marriott, it all started with an idea and a snow cone trailer. That led to a bounce house company, which led to several other ventures. Adam is a self - diagnosed serial entrepreneur. He has a hand in or owns about 127 different businesses. Ok...so maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but the guy is busy!

His most recent project is Time Out Entertainment Center – a bounce house and event rental space paradise on South 22nd Street. Occasionally, a “satisfied customer” brings in a picture they colored of their favorite bounce house. Adam says, that’s how he knows he’s on the right track.

Eighteen years ago, Erich Van Cleave took his side hustle and turned it into a full-time job, and St. Joseph homes have looked better ever since.

“I had good success by being professional and doing what I said I would,” Erich said.

In the beginning, he said a lot of people thought Van Cleave Construction Remodeling and Design was his father’s company, however, he started the company on his own with little more than an idea.

“Since then, I have grown it to have 17 employees with an annual revenue of around $3.5 million per year,” he said.

Times weren’t always easy. During the recession in 2007-2008 he kept employees on longer than he should have before laying them off.

“At my lowest point in business, I loaded up every tool that I wasn’t using or wouldn’t need for the coming month and headed to a pawn shop to make payroll,” Erich said. “I never wanted to miss a payroll for my employees. On the way to the pawn shop, a customer that I had been trying to reach for over a week finally called and had a check for me.”

Working with clients and employees is a perk of being a business owner, he said.
“I love making happy clients and seeing the project develop through team collaboration,” he said. “I am also very proud to be an employer.”

His business designs and builds full scale residential remodeling. He says he enjoys making people happy by creating spaces for them to enjoy.

Sometimes the building process is a part of the fun. He said one client made a date night out of shopping for plumbing fixtures and were provided an allowance sheet for staying on budget for the project. On the way to the store they stopped for a happy hour.

“Needless to say, they were in good spirits while shopping,” he said. They went substantially over budget on the fixtures, most notably was a $2,000 rain head shower fixture.

“The next morning, I got an email with the receipt of everything they had purchased with the subject line, ‘Go ahead and burn our allowance sheet,’” he said.

St. Joseph is a great place to do business because of great clients and word of mouth advertising. To learn more about Van Cleave Construction, Remodeling & Design, see its page or website: https://vancleaveconst.com/
