Founded by Sarah Baumert, BODY MATTER offers Yoga, Feldenkrais Method group classes, private lessons, and retreats. We welcome all, beginners to advanced.
Sarah's yoga classes are a blend of flowing yoga asanas, or poses, informed by precise attention to alignment, and supported by the calm wakefulness of Buddhist meditation practices. Sarah also teaches the Feldenkrais method. The Feldenkrais Method is a gentle movement practice that expands the brain's awareness of the body by exploring various movement patterns. Thus, allowing for more freedom an
Our feet are like ears to the ground. If we listen to the soles of each foot as we move, we may sense a path to balance. We can check if the pressure is distributed evenly or not, and whether our feet are responsive to our movements. This series will start by activating the arches of the feet so our weight can fall evenly onto the 3 arches of each foot. Experience the flexibility & vitality that creates receptive feet needed to move with ease and confidence.
Step Into Ease begins this week!
Remember, each lesson is taught twice. Once on Wednesdays and once again on Sundays. Join us Sunday the 14th for free to test out the material. All you need to do is head to the link in the bio and register there.
We hope to see you there!

The Blending of Yoga + Feldenkrais
April 3rd - June 12th
Mondays 6pm - 7:15pm CST
Livestream classes will be taught over Zoom
This will be a time to create space and feel what it is like living in this body.
When we have the courage to release places that feel physically stuck, mentally tight, or emotionally restricted, we can uncover a new internal landscape of this body we are living in. In these sessions we will invite space to become a more intimate part of our practice and our life. We will explore ways to move in harmony with our unique needs and how we feel each day, to encourage the body to soften and connect with the feelings of space and freedom.
Scholarships are available for this series. Please contact Sarah directly at [email protected] for scholarship inquires.
I will be offering a free Informational Talk and Q + A about Posture Matters right before the first lesson in the series. Come to hear more about the concept of posture from the Feldenkrais lens and ask any questions about this series!
If you register and join for this talk, you will also receive the link to attend class for free directly following the talk. This is a great opportunity to try the material out and get a taste for this course!
One of the best ways to learn about an upcoming series is from the people who have tried it already.
Students are experiencing less pain, more space, and deeper care for their own body and mind. You can receive these impacts as well by signing up for Posture Matters, an 8 week Feldenkrais Series beginning on March 1st.

Save the Date for New Feldenkrais Series - Posture Matters
8 Lesson Series Beginning on March 1st
Wednesdays @ 6:30pm CST & Sundays @ 4pm CST
Available to take via livestream on zoom or using the self-paced recordings
Everyone’s posture, or how they “use” themselves, isn’t always optimal. With the help of the Feldenkrais method, your postural habits can improve to make everyday movements more enjoyable and easy. Your posture, or, how you navigate being upright with gravity, profoundly affects not only your physical comfort, but your overall health and emotions too.
These lessons will focus on freeing your neck so that the head floats upward, and your spine goes along for the ride.

“Life is not a stable process. Our ability to recover is our greatest quality.”
This upcoming Tuesday, we will gather to spend time exploring and working on just that. The human brain’s primary job is to feel support from the ground below and organize the body to be upright in gravity. It’s something you may not consciously think about too much, until you lose your balance!
With a variety of playful approaches we will check in with our body and brain's effort in balancing and learn to find stability, ease, and breath all the while.
This workshop is open to all levels! Register here: https://body-matter.heymarvelous.com/product/50656/about

Within the larger systems of the universe, the earth, the country, your neighborhood.. Is YOUR bodily system, your nervous system, musculo-skeletal system, digestive system, and respiratory breathing system.
After the last few years, does your body have a recurrent or pervasive sense that danger is just around the corner, or that something terrible is about to happen? Or maybe it feels like every week or two there is an overwhelming sense of collective anxiety in response to a current event. What many people feel is the body trying to protect itself from a repeated experience of trauma or stress. The upcoming Body Matter Feldenkrais series will be focusing on Softening the System. Softening our own bodily systems, one by one, and in community.
We're not going to focus on fixing something, but rather we're going to play and expand our capacity for ease, for pleasure and curiosity and we will do that through an explorative process … through curiosity.
I will be referencing Resmaa Menakem quite a lot during this series - author of My Grandmother’s Hands, which is a beautiful book that introduces an alternative view of what we can do to grow beyond the racial divide that is amongst us. In his book, he offers somatic healing methods as well as current research in neuroscience to help entangle this mess we have all found ourselves in, a way to mend our bodies. In this series, we will explore Feldenkrais principles that are similar and/or identical to the methods that Resmaa Menakem offers in his book such as:
* Understanding how breathing can be a change agent for the central nervous system
* Relaxing the hands to support a relaxation in the whole system
* Humming
* Relaxing the Eyes
* Rocking the Body
We all have an individual system, but we are really all quite connected. Learn tools to find ease in your own system, which will impart support change in larger systems.
The ideas and concepts that we work on in class are not just for that specific time. They are tools to take into all parts of your life.
In the upcoming series, Soften the System, we will work to broaden our skill set for grounding our bodies and minds, to get to know the sensation of a settled nervous system, so that you can return to that place when you need to.
Join the free intro class this Sunday the 26th at 4:00pm CST. Register here: https://body-matter.heymarvelous.com/product/49326/about

I'm excited to return to teaching LIVE AND IN PERSON. To set this into motion, I will be hosting a Friday Feldenkrais workshop titled Re-Orienting Ourselves!
The last 2 years have taught us that we can impart knowledge very well online, but what sometimes feels missing is the social aspect that comes in a learning environment. Some people need this more than others.
We are all quite different now. Our attention spans and nervous systems have changed, but all of our brains have plasticity and we can form new habits yet again. We will lay on the floor together. We will orient ourselves to what it’s like to learn with others in the same room. We will get to know our feet in a novel way. We will turn things a little upside down in a playful way!
I have thought about what a re-entry into teaching in a studio would look like for a long time. How will we gather safely, with sensitivity, with inclusivity and respect for each other? Will people return? Will I remember how to teach in person? What words will be most useful?
I look forward to seeing some of you there! Beginners to Feldenkrais are welcome!

The ability to settle your body takes practice, just as the act of activating the body takes practice. During the sessions of Soften the System, we will use novel movement and interspersed rest to help disentangle patterns of bodily tension and move towards finding our own ground together.
Lessons are taught on Wednesday and again on Sunday. If you are not able to attend the live classes, recordings are always up 48 hours after they are taught. Soften the System begins on June 29th and continues until August 28th.
To try out an example of what we will work on together, register and attend the FREE intro class on Sunday, June 26th at 4:00pm on zoom. Link here: https://app.heymarvelous.com/body-matter/event/details/542403
“Settling is not the same as healing, it is an all-important foundation for healing. A settled body invites and accepts efforts to mend it, an unsettled one tends to resist those efforts.” - Resmaa Menakem
Hold the dates for the next Feldenkrais ATM Series, Soften the System! This course will offer practice and tools for settling the body, in efforts to engage with the world and in relationships in a way that feels skillful, wise, and from a place of compassion. We will work with listening to our bodies to better know, listen, and understand.

Here is Neck Care Part 3 - mobility.
Part 1 was awareness, Part 2, strength, and now we will take a more in depth look at stretching the neck safely. It’s important not to view the neck as something we tug and pull at and just stretch aggressively. This is why I am taking a comprehensive look at the many ways we can approach neck care. If you are trying all of the neck classes in this series, you can take note of which approach you are finding most helpful and supportive for you and then return to those episodes!
If this is work that is speaking to you and your body, reach out for suggestions of other offerings to continue the exploration!
Check out the current Body Matter Schedule!
All classes, even series, are available for drop ins. If you are craving more movement, find an offering that speaks to you. Head over to the Body Matter website to get more information about each class. https://www.body-matter.com/classes
All courses also have a pay-as-able option when you are checking out with a single class. Feel free to reach out at any time with any questions!
As promised, there are more neck care resources coming your way!
Pair this episode with Part 1 from last week or experience this short lesson all on its own. We will work to strengthen and reverse the effects of the forward and down head action. Something we can all use!

By combining gentle movement with directed attention, you can enhance the function and motion throughout the body, increase your ease and range of motion, improve your flexibility and coordination, and rediscover your innate capacity for graceful, efficient movement. The Feldenkrais® Method is established from principles of physics, biomechanics, and an empirical understanding of learning and human development. By expanding your self-awareness through movement sequences, this method enables you to include untapped muscle groups into your daily movements.
