Four days + 32 students + 30 volunteers = one AMAZING college essay workshop! Students from all over the Twin Cities crafted college essays from scratch this week with the help of talented local storytellers. Special shoutout to the New York Times’ Ernesto Londoño and Bethel University’s Scott Winter for their guest instruction on “silencing your inner critic” and “loving your editor.” We finished the week off with a friends and family presentation of students’ essays. Thanks for your hard work, students! We are moved by what you’ve been through and what you dream about. We hope to see you soon. 😉
Meet Ernesto Londoño, a New York Times national correspondent based in Minnesota, who served as a guest instructor during our Multimedia Storytelling Institute.
Londoño is currently completing a graduate degree in Mindfulness Studies at Lesley University, and he taught ThreeSixty students about mindfulness practices for journalism and writing.
“Newsrooms are frenetic places and the work we do takes a heavy toll. Starting a serious meditation practice in 2018 was a game changer for me,” Londoño said.
Londoño offered lessons in making sound judgements, navigating difficult conversations and reflecting on the journalist’s inner critic. He emphasized his teaching with virtual visits from writing superstars Lulu Garcia-Navarro and Curtis Sittenfeld.
Thank you, Ernesto (and Lulu and Curtis), for sharing your expertise and connections with our students! We feel so fortunate!
Our three-week Multimedia Storytelling Institute has wrapped! It’s been a blast learning the ethical, technical and entrepreneurial basics of journalism alongside our students. We miss you all already!
This week, students put together social media features for their stories with support from the Sahan Journal’s Samantha Hoangloang and MPR’s Feven Gerezgiher, Samantha Stroozas and Anne Guttridge. They learned about media relations from Darryl Sellers, Carolyn Will, and Leah Kondes. They reflected on their entire experience with the New York Times’ Ernesto Londoño. They closed out the week by presenting their work to the public at our student showcase and by traveling downtown for a field trip to the Star Tribune.

That’s a wrap on ThreeSixty’s whirlwind Capitol reporting workshop!
Over four weeks, 20 high school journalists learned the ins and outs of legislative reporting, covering policy issues that explore how democracy works for young people. From school resource officers to bonding to ethnic studies and the trans refuge bill, youth took to the halls of the State Capitol, interviewing both elected officials and community advocates. Their stories will be published on our platform and other local media platforms in the coming weeks.
This was one of ThreeSixty’s most ambitious workshops to date, and we couldn’t have done it without the huge team of local journalists who volunteered their time to support our students through their reporting and editing processes. Huge thanks to Alfonzo Galvan, Katelyn Vue, Chao Xiong, and Samantha HoangLong from Sahan Journal, David Pierini from North News, Trisha Ahmed from The Associated Press, retired journalists Bill Wareham and Bob Shaw, Madi McVan and Deena Fay Winter from Minnesota Reformer, Melody Hoffman from Southwest Voices, researcher Mike Malloy, Chloe Johnson, Zoë Jackson, and Eder Campuzano from Star Tribune, Brian Bakst and Ngoc Bui from from MPR News, and Harry Colbert from MinnPost. Guest speakers were the cherry on top—thank you to Fatima Moore from Firefly Advocacy, Walker Orenstein and Briana Bierschbach from Star Tribune, Peter Callaghan from MinnPost, Cirien Saadeh from The UpTake, and ThreeSixty Journalism alum Danielle Wong for being a fountain of knowledge on journalism and advocacy.
