According to the National Association of Realtors, The average Real Estate Sales Agent salary in the United States is $46,014 as of January 26, 2024, but the range typically falls between $44,951 and $58,528. The median gross income of REALTORS® increased to $56,400 from $54,300 in 2021.
There is a lot of talk in the news today about real estate agent commissions. There is no standard or typical commission percentage. In fact, in the 8 years I have had my business I can count on one hand the number of “standard 6%” deals I have facilitated. I love my job and it is about helping people obtain their goal.
It's not a secret how we earn our money. Read below and you will see how flawed the Press is on this story.
As a REALTOR we do not get paid a hourly wage or salary and we only get paid if we sell a home and it closes.
I can only get paid by my broker.
I could work with someone days, weeks, months, or years with no guarantee of a sale ever.
Essentially I wake up each day unemployed going on Job Interviews and deal with constant rejection.
I dedicate time away from family, use my own time, gas, miss dinners, weekends and work while on vacation.
I am on 24/7! I constantly need to be on or I could miss an opportunity.
Once I do close a home, the commission is divided between the 2 brokerages and I am paid from my brokerage's portion.
I have lots of upfront expenses that must be paid out before/if I get paid. Here are just some examples:
Broker Splits and Fees
Office rent and utilities
MLS Fees
NAR Fees (which I am sure will go up after this settlement)
Local Association Fees
E&O Business Insurance
Extended Auto Insurance
Self-Employment Tax
State Licensing Fees
Advertising Fees
Showing Service Fees
Website Fees
Yard Signs
Photographers
Videographers
Office Supplies
Business Cards
Property Flyers
Electronic Lockboxes
Continued RE Education
Legal Fees
Gas
Income taxes are not taken out of my checks so I have to put that aside, around 25-30%.
Don’t forget health insurance I don’t have an option for coverage through my Spouse
