It's easy to get caught up in "official" portion sizes. For vegetables, the "official" size is 1 Tbs per year of age for kids 1-3. But since when has any toddler anywhere followed the "official" recommendations? Certainly not mine. 😆
⠀
I like to think of the "official" portion size as a good starting place. But watch your kid. Is it too much or not enough for them? For foods they never eat, put a "disgusted" serving size on their plate. For that food they pound (strawberries, anyone?), load them up. It's okay for kids to eat as much as they want at every meal and snack. It's okay if they eat almost nothing. It's okay if they eat as much as you.⠀

FYI, the official recommendation is 2-3 servings of fruits and 2-3 servings of veggies per day. But as we know - they may not eat veggies for 2 days and then eat as much as you on day 3. It's okay. And it's okay to sub fruit for veg if they are going through a rough patch. 😘

What our patients are saying…

12/31/2021

9 minutes a day...

Research shows that positive connection with our children during the 9 most important minutes of their day are the most influential in helping them to feel centered and loved.

3 minutes when they first wake up
3 minutes when they get home from school/aftercare
3 minutes at bedtime

How to make a positive connection? Take turns saying what you are grateful for, play some music, have a dance party, ask open ended questions about their day, offer praise for good effort or just snuggle up and let them lead the conversation.

One of the biggest frustrations we hear from parents is that they can't get their kids to eat their veggies. It's ok! Kids' bitter taste buds are extra sensitive, which is why a lot of them don't love veggies. Continue to offer vegetables, but in the meantime fill in the gap with fruit, which can provide vital nutrients as well. As with everything, kids learn from what parents do - so model your healthy food choices on a daily basis and before you know It, your child may be stealing your broccoli off your plate 🥦
